Linked with Nottingham Forest again today.

Hard to believe that he wouldn't have at least half a dozen Premier League teams interested in him.

Whatever about his goalscoring record, there are probably still only 3 or 4 strikers with better goalscoring records outside the top 6 clubs.

Look at Modibo Maiga, Danny Graham, Pablo Osvaldo, Jozy Altidore and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel off the top of my head.

They have shocking goalscoring records, no better than Long in other non-goalscoring aspects and half of them are probably making three times as much as Long.

GOAL - West Brom 1-1 Hull - Matej Vydra (86 mins)Wow - what a fine team goal this is! Shane Long with the Zidane-style backheel to Zoltan Gera, he feeds an inch-perfect pass to Matej Vydra, and the ex-Watford man calmly sends a low shot into the net for his first for the club. Big goal.

It was good from Shane. It wasn't that good. Plus he back heeled it to himself and played a simple pass to Gera who made the goal with a Grealish-esque :) pass to Vydra.

At West Brom, he is probably used to being treated with a modicum of respect and diplomacy.

The list of players Trapattoni fell out with was quite frankly embarrassing.

I forget where Long was treated with disrespect.
You're not talking about the game where Trap said he didn't use him because he was an injury suspect but Long stuck his head in front of a microphone and claimed he was fit, then he wasn't fit after all, but we were not supposed to know he wasn't fit?
The very same player who was allowed by Trap to leave the Ireland camp, sent on a wild good transfer chase by his club, why? because his club respect him so much?

Trapattoni has form for this, in fairness. I don't think anyone can excuse what happened with Kevin Foley, Stephen Kelly and Steven Reid in particular.

Long himself was poorly utilised for a long time, being left out of the side when people like Folan, Best, Cox and Walters were playing.

And if I recall, Trapattoni called him "stupid". It's blatant lack of respect and hypocrisy, considering some of his managerial faux pas over the last 5 years.

Your recall is suspect and the analysis immature.
Trap says Shane Long fitness claim 'idiotic' (http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/international/2012/0816/333882-trapattoni-believes-longs-comments-were-idiotic/)
Trap did not say Long was stupid, he said Long's claim to be be fit was idiotic, i.e. to publicly claim he was fit when he was declared unfit to play.
And since, we have seen another example of Long's immaturity, towards another manager.

Whether he called him stupid or idiotic doesn't excuse it. Are you going to try and defend his behaviour towards Stephen Kelly? Steven Reid?

I would understand Shane Long's exasperation with Trapattoni. It must be pretty humiliating to be kept out of the team by the 6th choice striker at his own club because Trapattoni couldn't tell the difference between them.

Trap neither called him stupid nor idiotic.
Trap said his claim to be fit was idiotic and it was idiotic because he was unfit and Trap was going to start with him.
There's a difference between regarding an opinion to be idiotic and regarding a person to be idiotic, playing the ball v playing the man.

Are you going to try and defend his behaviour towards Stephen Kelly? Steven Reid?
What on earth has that got to do with what Trap said about Shane Long?

Fine, you understand and support Long's exasperation, protests and indiscipline at being left out of the team by Trap after he was declared unfit to play and his exasperation, protests and indiscipline after he was left out of the team by King, when he was fit to play.

geysir, you are just going to have to accept that some people will think Trapattoni calling one of his players' behaviour "idiotic" and insinuating that they are stupid is arrogant and unprofessional; just like his behaviour towards Steven Reid when Sam Allardyce had to put him in his place after making some asinine and potentially career damaging remarks about his supposed lack of fitness and just like his behaviour towards Stephen Kelly when he made borderline libellous comments about him and the FAI (again) had to reproach him for his fundamental lack of common sense, respect and decency.

Compare the way Andy Reid dealt with his exclusion from the Irish team with the way Trapattoni dealt with it. Night and day. Reid didn't have a bad word to say about him. Then you have Trapattoni constantly making belittling remarks and innuendo (and again like Steven Reid furore) that could impact on Andy's club career.

When you look at the players Trapattoni fell out with; S. Reid, A. Reid, Foley and Kelly, these are probably the most laid back, polite and intelligent members of the squad and you would swear they were Roy Keane foaming at the mouth the way Trapattoni managed to vex them.

Again, with Long, I understand his exasperation and petulance (Stokes too) of being unused substitutes year in year out, not getting so much as a substitute appearance
and then watching Jonathan Walters and Simon Cox practically walk into the first team as soon as they get their passports.

I admire your willingness to defend Trapattoni to the hilt; he done reasonably well before Euro 2012 but he erased a lot of the goodwill by saying "arrivederci" if he didn't get a new contract before Euro 2012 and then half assing it during the WC qualifying campaign.

Stokes dug his own grave with his attitude with Trap.

But, what has Walters (the son of an Irish woman) done to be dragged into this? Or Cox?

Long is way too inconsistent for Ireland. Fluffed chance after fluffed chance would be enough to wind me up too.

Soldado and Adebayor aren't setting the world on fire though.

I don't defend Trapattoni to the hilt but will accept/grab any admiration offered, even if it's misplaced.
You are aware that under Trap, Long was probably the most played attacking player under Trap in the WC 14 qualifiers and friendlies?
He was almost ever present. I think he just missed one game.
As I said, I don't expect Long to be firing off insulting tweets about his paymasters at West Brom as long as they are paying his wages, regardless of what humiliating experience he is forced to endure there, eg being loaned out to Hull/ not being loaned out to Hull, being benched for games. Imagine not being regarded good enough for West Brom?

he done reasonably well before Euro 2012 but he erased a lot of the goodwill by saying "arrivederci" if he didn't get a new contract before Euro 2012 and then half assing it during the WC qualifying campaign
Trap's contract ran out before the Finals, if the FAI did not renew his contract, then they would have been saying goodbye to him, not the other way around. His contract was renewed almost immediately after we qualified.
Most managers have an end date, Trap's ran out before the finals, but I don't feel the need to rewrite history before we qualified for the Euros in order to blacken Trap, leave that type of thing for the divorce courts.
No doubt under our current management, peace and love will be restored in the camp, (as Robbie has urged) management will not be tolerating insulting tweets from players directed at management, even if they come from Shane Long.

For all the knocks against him, Long scored more goals from open play against Aston Villa than Soldado has all season. For a back-up striker, I reckon his goal a game ratio, his fee and his wages should make him an attractive signing for Spurs.

He'd probably get decent playing time. Until they inevitably buy another big name striker (or two) in the summer.

Hard decision to make if he has to make one at all. Does he go to Hull where he will be first name on the team sheet or go to a big team and push the likes of Soldado and Adebayor?

At 27 and with a good chance of becoming Ireland's #1 striker, his next move is a crucial one.

Stuttgart88
30/12/2013, 4:34 PM
I think Hull would be a better move. Other things (i.e., money) being equal, I think this because he'd be a certain starter and appreciated by fans who have a sense of realism, and a manager that seems to be at his level and good at bringing out the best in non-elite players.

Spurs always flatter to deceive and other teams have nipped in ahead of them to be the Champs League contenders. I just can't see Spurs being a CL team again anytime soon. Sherwood is unproven and will be shown the door unless they consolidate a top 5 / 6 position at worst. The fans have delusions of grandeur, there's a very iffy director of football and the board are trigger happy. In short, he's joining a club in a fair bit of bother and that's not the stable platform he needs. Despite the comings and goings wrt the club's name and an unproven owner, Hull are in a better place and will be for the foreseeable future.

I bet he'll end up at Hull. It seems that the Championship sides are willing to bid immediately, while Spurs may pursue other options and maintain interest in Long. If the Championship sides are the lower tier of interest and Spurs are the higher tier, then Hull come as middle tier and have made a concrete bid in the past. They'd be a better option than the Championship, without being the big club that would appeal to most footballers. They look solid but not infallible, in that relegation next season could occur, as is the nature of the PL.

Long and Jelavic aren't that similar in style. Take into account that they've started George Boyd and Yannick Sagbo against Chelsea, with Matt Fryatt and Danny Graham on the bench then there's not a dearth of options there in terms of goalscorers and quality forwards. If Jelavic can regain his goal-scoring form and Long comes in, then Bruce can clear out the deadwood with Fryatt being a Championship striker (at best) and Graham being fairly gash since his good first season with Swansea. Boyd is a midfielder and Sagbo is a grafter, without much of the goals. Bringing in Long and Jelavic for £8.5m would be good business if you consider that Sunderland paid £5m for Graham.

PS. Long is starting up front beside Anelka for WBA today.
