Is Griffin that bad? I know he made the mistake in the cup final but anytime I've seen him (which obviously isn't an awful lot) he looks very tidy and has the physicality to mix it with any attacking player. I'd say he's one of the best full-backs in the league but apparently people can't say that anymore!
He lost possession on the half way line after getting a lazy pass back from the golden boy Sadlier. Griffin has been unfairly vilified by Cork fans, who seem to ignore that no one followed McEleney's run and McCormacks inability to watch what was going on around him.

Nonsense. We were attacking and Griffin lost the ball, again. He did it over and over and has done it all season long. He has left us in those positions all season long. Hence the frustration.
He wasn't the only one at fault, the run not being tracked was criminal, but to try to blame Sadlier is rubbish.
Teams have targeted Griffin all season, hes an obvious weak link defensively and incredibly frustrating to watch every week.
Granted Griffin did lose the ball in the lead up to the winning goal, but I would also agree McCormack was far too slow to react to McEleney’s run, and Sadlier can’t be blameless either as he almost walked back after giving the pass in the first place.
As for Griffin, harsh to label all the blame on him, didn’t he clear off the line a few minutes after the penalty from Gartland’s header, and that was going in too.

I see Gary Shaw has joined pats.
A thoroughly nice fella and a honest hard-working player who always gave his best when playing for Rovers.
I didn't work out for him at Rovers last year but I'd like to think there would be no negative feeling towards him when we play pats next year.

Not a chance of negative stuff. He was popular player a dtried his heart out. Can't blame him for signing for pats he had to play for someone

Nobody has labeled all the blame on Griff, but the difference is Griff does this sort of thing every game. Its natural for fand to get frustrated at it.

Apart from the lazy pass bit, this is bang on the money. Morrisey was having his best game of the season before he went off - we were exposed in the aftermath.
Cork are being busy with a few signings already, I think I saw another last night, a local lad getting a pro contract. I think they made a flurry of signings around the same time last year, at that point when they got Barry and McNamee in, I thought they would both have a major impact in their season. The former hardly featured and the latter must have thought it was just a waste of his time going down.
Genuine question for Cork fans, why didn’t McNamee have an impact, I know Barry made a good few mistakes early season and fell off the radar, but he was a quality player going down, and I was thinking of him with Dundalk. However McNamee should really have done better, was it a case of JC not wanting to change his MF set up or playing him out of position or just a case of it didn’t work out for a variety of reasons which ended up with that reported falling out around Sept?

Defensively, yes, he's been poor. He actually can be very good going forward. He's probably best suited on the left wing. But we had no options at left back at season which meant he was a certainty to be picked every week. Hence, the problem.
I actually like the guy, he seems to have a superb attitude and the potential is clearly there. But maybe that's best deployed further up the field.

I know people have their own theories on McNamee, but playing him in his best position would have displaced Garry Buckley. There's pro's and con's to this, but personally I'd have Garry in there week-in week-out.

A few whispers of a swap deal between Dundalk and Waterford.
Chevdukhas and Hery, both contracted for 2019, going in either direction.

If that happens it'll be a big transfer fee for heary and chevdukas playing (or not) free of charge for Waterford.
Do dundalk even need him, u can only keep so many top players happy

Can't say I'm too inspired about the signing of Shaw, obviously haven't seen him as much of him as Rovers fans have but I've never been too impressed nor worried when I've seen him play against us. We need strikers though and it's hard for any side to sign one from within the league that will kick you on as it is, so he might be the best under the circumstances and if nothing else a bit more of a presence than Jake Keegan.
Waterford would want to have rocks in their head to let Hery go. Their best performer and one of about 2 or 3 they actually have under contract at the moment.

There is a point in that, but it is more a question of players keeping the manager happy

Hery apparently does want out of Waterford and has spoken to Caulfield about a move. Which seems bizarre given their history.

That is what I heard too.
Dundalk are looking for a playing who can control the tempo of a game in European matches. O'Donnell is coming to an end of his career and as good as Shields is in the LOI, he is not the player do that in Europe.

Why are all Waterford's players leaving. 4th in the Prem first year back and seemingly on an upward curve with a good backer. Seems strange.

Definitely strange. Hes not the only one with a fractured relationship with Cauflield I've heard credible rumours about looking for a move to City either. There's a certain big boned defender who also contacted City about a return to Turners Cross. If its true about those players there are probably others looking for a move. Maybe Waterford are waiting to get confirmation from UEFA about whether they will be likely to get a license before they start offering contracts and players are (rightly) impatient?

Sure we can just take it out of the Drinan money we're still owed. And I'm not sure we've been paid for Browne either.

You probably shouldn't get on your high horse over the non payment of transfer fees. I believe drawing blood from a stone was said to be easier than getting the compensation that we were owed for Colm Horgan from Cork.

Dobbs is actually from us. Very good for us underage, went to wexford on loan for school reasons I think (?) and seemed to struggle but didn't have much around him in his defence so I'd be happy enough with him if I were you guys

I would find that strange why Waterford would be interested in taking a player who has been injured for 3/4 of the season and swapping him with a a guy in a lot of people's team of the year even with a cash plus deal.
Ps Jack, with respect, Pats have to be realistic where they are, you finished 5th but only after a late surge, I think Shaw is a more than decent addition for Pats for 2019. If I was in a similar position as say when Dundalk were just OK under Foster (2010 and 2011) finishing 5th and 6th, I'd be having a player like this to improve things.

I had heard that took a while to resolve but it was resolved eventually. Drinan left us in very strange circumstances last summer and Waterford have still not paid what is owed. I don't know if the Browne situation has been resolve but if not then that is over 18 months now

For sure, I definitely don't have any delusions about the level of player we should be signing - we were extremely "lucky" to finish 5th this season after all.
More so echoing the point of the general lack of strikers in the league that guarantee you goals. That's probably the one thing we lacked this season more than anything and as much as I agree Shaw's a better option than what we had he still doesn't necessarily promise that.

Gotta love silly season! Hery and Aborah were both very impressed that every team in the Premier Division tried to play passing football....except Cork. Neither has good things to say about how they play. Bastien is a baller - can't wait to see him with us again next year.

A late surge can ofcourse help your final position but it can sometimes be misleading going into the following season. Dundalk finished 5th** from 10 in the bizzare Sean Conor single season of 2009, but only for a last day win and 2 other odd results we were heading for 8th, 7th at best. This was backed up by 6th and 7th finishes (from 12) the two seasons after.
** that 5th finish incredibly qualified Dundalk for Europe as both Cork and Derry were relegated / removed to FD.
Back on actual signings, seems Dundalk are interested in taking Aaran McCarey from Warrenpoint to replace Sava. Still appears to be links on McEneff, but not on Sadlier, I'd think he'll have options in L1 or possibly championship. I don't get the Hery link at all. He's under contract, Waterford would be looking for serious money.

saw the northern ireland coverage at weekend and saw McCarey make a top class save from a peno for Warrenpoint... he would be a great signing for Dundalk!

Not sure where you're getting the late surge from. We were between 5th and 7th for most of the season if memory serves me right, in fact we probably spent most time in fifth (though I'm no statto so open to correction there.)Anyway, it's not like we surged up three or four places in the last few weeks. You could equally say that were it not for a rotten run mid season we could have been close to challenging for Europe. (Not saying we deserved that btw, as they say the table doesn't lie and I think where we finished was about right.)

Good to see the two lads resigning as well, McCourt looked very tidy in the Pats game and could well have a role either in defence or midfield. Mageurson has been very unlucky with injuries so hopeful get an injury free run to finally fulfill the bags of potential he has shown in his stop/start career to date.

Think he’ll be a big loss, there isn’t much in terms of quality strikers in the league. He pushed us over the line to get the fourth spot. Hoping we get Duffus permanently and get him firing again
