Its not a great sign if Cork are trying to get rid of their only striker. Do they think Sheppard is going to play up there week in week out?
I wonder if this is a fake new story.

Plenty of games Cummins hasn't started. It's just not working out for him. I'd say most would rather a young lad up there and the cash saved.

Can't agree - Cummins still has 4 goals this season - if he managed 10 in the league and a goal in europe he would be value to us. I can't see the logic of letting him go.

If he is out of contract at the end of the season there is probably modest financial risk in retaining him in the hope that he will get some vital goals for Cork that could trigger a European push (the current 7 point gap to 4th place is achievable).
I can't see anything in the story that Rovers will sign him. While they are clearly in need of a hat stand/centre forward, Dan Carr is a more obvious choice to play there. Even the erratic Rovers management are hardly likely to offer an 18 month deal for Cummins and there is little motivation for him to move for a 4 month contract

Still injured, not signed but agreed to sign according to the Indo
Highly rated UCD winger Neil Farrugia has turned down the possibility of a move to England and agreed to join Shamrock Rovers.
He is expected to formally sign an 18-month deal with the Hoops, but there are no plans to insert a clause that would facilitate a quick exit at the 12-month point.
Bohemians also tried to bring in the left-sided player, with an understanding that they would not stand in his way if the right offer came in.
His UCD colleague Gary O'Neill will also be joining the title-chasing Tallaght side as Stephen Bradley looks to strengthen his squad. The long-serving midfielder has finished his degree at Belfield.

The striker thing at rovers is difficult, greene has scored 6 goals from play which puts him 1 behind Duffy, drinan and Dinny for the year, a lot of rovers supporters would say he is up there with jack Byrne for poty creating chances for others and getting plenty of assists but he does miss lots of chances no question.
Is Cummins better overall ??

Not a huge fan of Cummins but would rate him a lot higher than Greene. Given the creativity at Shams the number of goals scored by Greene is very mediocre.
The question for Shams is, is it worth spending another wedge on Cummins ? Second place pretty much nailed on and unless they beat Dundalk next week I think that’s as good as it will get. He’s not young so little chance of sell on value. While spending unnecessarily seems acceptable at Tallaght, it still seems a waste. Had they signed him at the start of the season he may have made a big difference but now I’m not so sure.

He may be the hatstand Rovers are after. Bohs would create plenty of chances for him and Pats fans think he would fit in to their style whatever that is at the moment, so I think Cork might be successful in offloading him. If reducing the wage bill is the main objective I doubt there will be too many signings unless they are from local junior clubs ala Mark O'Sullivan.
Rovers already have a hatstand but, given Bradley's recruiting policy in midfield, he may well be after another hatstand to stand in when our other hatstand can't stand any other hats.

We've got centre halves with more goals. And goals aside his overall contribution tends to be minimal. Not at all through lack of effort, his works hard, but his lack of pace and the lack of support coming in with him make him generally ineffective. He doesn't get enough breaking support from midfield and not enough high quality crosses to really see his strengths. I actually think he could do well at Rovers with their midfield and style.
But mostly it's outlay vs return. He's one of our most highly paid, and I don't think that's justified with our current financial situation

We've got centre halves with more goals.
Sadly, no we don't.
Can't agree with the financial outlay situation either - no-one is going to pay all of his wages in any case : all we potentially save is say €500 (guess) per week for 6 months - thats 13k off a wage bill maximum. Who is going to come in (thats available ) and do a better job than Cummins for that sort of money. Again if Cummins gets a goal in Europe and 6 more goals in the league - if we can sneak 4th and get into Europe then he will be worth every penny. Getting rid of him looks penny wise and Pound foolish to me. Not to mind the signal it sends to the rest of the club.

Agree re. Cummins. He may have turned out to be a poor man's Hoban but who are Cork get who is better for the few quid they can save on the wage bill. The move only makes sense if Cork are in dire straits and have written off the rest of the season.
On a more positive note, it's great to have Andy Boyle back at Dundalk. If we want to get better, players of Andy's quality are hard to come by and have to be snapped up.

Those are some enormous ifs. Yes, if he got us through Europe and 4th place in the league he'd be worth the money. It seems highly speculative and unlikely to see that happening though.
I don't think there's any suggestion we would let him go and keep paying his wages. If he's going to Rovers for example it would be a move. In that situation, wed be saving a lot more than 500 a week.
Can we replace him? With how he's playing currently and has been all season, it really wouldn't take much. But I'd imagine the most likely is that shep would go up top. Better? No. Worse? Questionable. Worth the money difference, possibly.
I certainly wouldn't be overly concerned to lose him. Genuinely don't think we can get much worse. Which isn't something you'd expect to be saying about your highest earner. I'd imagine many people feel similar.

Hardly an enormous if to think he might get 6 more league goals this season, he has 4 goals in 12 starts so far (5 sub) - there is still 15 games to go and he did score the last day. People are too quick to write him off - our problems lie deeper on the field.

I didn't believe the Cummins one at first but it seems to be sticking. Not sure what to think of it. Obviously he's a good player and knows where the goal is but can't figure out how he'd fit into our team, and we'd presumably be paying him to live up here.

If thats true its two great signings in Gary o Neill and niall farrugia. The Cummins one makes sense too as Aaron greene is missing too many chances but at the same time brings a huge amount to the game in terms of linking play and assists so Cummins will need to score regularly to justify his place.

Cummings would be a great fit for Rovers and regarding his lack of goals, give him an alrite wage but whack a decent goal bonus onto it and then surely it's win win for Rovers. Pity to see the UCD team being ripped apart again. If Sloggett and O'Connor stayed for the prem campaign it could have been a different story but thats every season so they are well used to it i suppose!
If anything, the UCD squad hasn't been ripped apart enough.

Assumes that cork are not paying some of Cummins wages. I'm guessing farrugia and o Neill aren't big money but looking to position themselves for a move to UK when they are ready. Either way we need a bit of cover, the squad is very thin.

I don't know if Aaron will be moved on. Funnily enough Greg Bolger's emergence as being very important to how the team play might have helped him as it has sort of shown that the sort of deeper midfielder role is vital in how the team and system works and Aaron plays that role very well and there's not really anyone else that's really a natural at it. People also forget that Aaron is still only 19 too so it's not as if he's at a stage of needing to be playing every week.

Georgie Kelly was a big loss too. If they had of kept these players and went against their own rules regarding players only in the college playing for them they might be further up the table! Wasn't too long ago they signed back Shorthall and signed Jay Byrne aswel

It's not really about going against our own rules really; I think we just don't have the money for outsiders these days. Compare now to even 5 years ago - three extra youth teams and a big increase in insurance costs (as Sligo have shown). That money has to come out of the wages bill. Wouldn't surprise me if we were pretty much fully amateur tbh

Cummins is a done deal but obviously Cork want him for Friday night (and possibly Monday?).
Why have UCD realeased their 2 players before the transfer window opens? Given their position in the table, surely it would make sense to have them available for this weekend.

Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers are expected to add striker Graham Cummins to the pair of UCD recruits they signed yesterday.Gary O'Neill and U-21 international Neil Farrugia arrived but neither will be available for tomorrow's clash against Dundalk.
A deal to bring Cummins from Cork City should be concluded as early as today, with Joel Coustrain heading the other way on loan. Another fringe player, Sam Bone, could also be on his way to Munster on loan, with Waterford leading the hunt.
