Also thinking about the slight chance that we win the rest of our games. Mons lose to us, but win all the rest, Shels draw one of Waterford or Harps(or salthill I guess). And Mons win the league, we come second and Shels somehow end up in the playoff! Is a bottling of that proportion possible.

Here is one favourable permutation:
Tue 4th Oct:
CCFC V Mons - Home Win
(Shels 26/62, CCFC 27/60, Mons 26/58, Lim 27/57)
Sat 8th Oct:
Waterford V Shels - Draw - The result that could allow CCFC back in the title hunt.
(CCFC 28/63, Shels 27/63, Mons 27/61, Lim 27/57)
Fri 14th Oct:
CCFC bye week.
(Shels 28/66, Mons 28/64, CCFC 28/63, Lim 28/60)
Fri 21st Oct:
Mons V Limerick - Away Win - The result that stops Mons from winning the league.
(Shels 29/69, CCFC 29/66, Mons 29/64, Lim 29/63)
Sat 29th Oct:
Shels V CCFC - Away Win to win the league.
Lim V Waterford - doesn't matter as Athlone would have to beat Mons.
(CCFC 30/69, Shels 30/69, Mons 30/67, Lim 30/66).
All the games not included are against teams outside the top 5 and are given as 3 points to the teams in the top 4.

All well and good, but how did we go up a point during our bye week? :p
It would be enough for us to finish level with Shels given that it means them dropping further points and we already have a superior goal difference.

Good spot. That point is effectively our superior goal difference which is worth an extra point. :p
Fixed now.

Ah the old,oft repeated "goal difference is worth an extra point" line from Alex Ferguson; in fact, superior goal difference is worth an extra half a point

How hurt are Davin and Derek? x x
Not that it's really relevant to me anymore! I think our best case scenario would actually still leave Shels and Cork needing to play out a draw on the final day to both go up. :bulgy:

I think your right and that they wont beat em but i was surprised they beat Shels too so hoping Roderick can pull it off again..
At least if they draw we can pretend we have hope last day of the season for once.
After seeing Mervue wouldn't bet against them taking something off Mons either if Cork were to win.
Still having a slight interest with 3 games to go is a great change from playing months of games knowing you are getting nothing like previous years so im happy enough for now.
Edit: Last day of season interest if we can beat Mons.

Still amazed that regardless of who we beat people still it's a on off and a fluke , we were by far the better team last night

Its not that i dont think ye are good enough to beat Cork its that if ye beat them i could help us so i think it wont happen.
How hurt are Davin and Derek?Derek left the field on a stretcher and left the Cross on crutches, Davin has a hamstring strain, both probably won't feature on Tuesday.

Then several dozen people in the border region are wrong!!
Mervue were exactly as expected last night, a pretty decent side with two or three very good players. But without Gaffney they're toothless, the good sides will find it very hard to concede against them, lord knows we did our best in the first half last night.
The very worst you'll come out of there with is a nil all draw.
I'll give you Limerick in fairness, it's a far tougher place for a challenger to go than Limerick is!

If Monaghan beat Cork it will suit Limerick therefore I don't think it will happen. :)
Wasn't a dig at Monaghan at all, I've told anyone that will listen that they'd finish top three for the last two years now.

All we need now is for Cummins to get injured in training and Cork literally wont score for the rest of the season :p

After seeing Mervue last night I was very disappointed in them. We played poor but they where worse. Even playing poor we could probably have come away with a few more goals if we took our chances. No doubt they are better than Athlone, Salthill and Wexford but Barr that they ain't great. Without Gaffney they aren't dangerous in attack but surprisingly enough Gaffney was very poor for us last night.
Tuesday is massive for City. We have to beat Mons to have any chance of getting 2nd, but even after that we still need them to drop points
Win our final 4 games and that might only be enough for 3rd .
So tight that one more slip up from us and we could face another season in the first division .

Do Galway fans have any preference as to who they want to finish 3rd for the playoff?
I wasn't that impressed by Limerick last night. I haven't seen Cork or Mons this season but I'm going to watch Mons against Mervue in a couple of weeks. Whoever we play it's going to be very difficult.

IMO the top 4 teams in the 1st Div would be a mid table Premier team. Make what you want of that.

They're best/only shot is Mons winning Tuesday. If that happens, our confidence will take a nosedive and Shels will have something to play for when playing us in Tolka, and would be likely to get at least a point. This would mean Limerick get promoted if they win all their games.
I think if we get a draw/win on Tuesday then it's game over for Limerick.

I can't see Cork remaining in the First Division. I want to see Limerick in the Premier but I could only ever see it happening at the expense of the Mons.

How though? Mons are a point ahead of hem with 2 games in hand! I really can't see how Limerick would catch them. Even if we beat them, and Limerick did, they'd still have to drop a point elsewhere for Limerick to overtake them. In the form they're in it just seems unrealistic.

If ye draw ye need to draw one more and us to win our 3 for us to take 3rd so cant see how it would be game over then.

I say that because I don't think ye can beat Monaghan. If we lose, ye can get away with drawing with Monaghan and still get promoted if we lose to Shels.
Obviously it's all opinion based, I just think it's far more likely if we lose.

Crazy to think that Monaghan have lost to Mervue twice!
As a GUFC fan I'd expect us to lose to whoever we meet in the playoff but given a pick of the teams I'd like us to play Monaghan. Mind you if Shels continue their recent form they could end up in the playoff too!
Butterflies over tonight alright. Complete game changer. Either we win, and fight for 2nd or even 1st, or we draw/lose and fight for 3rd.

I personally don't believe that the defence is good enough. They'll have 2 very good strikers. If they get the ball, we could be in trouble. And how are we going to stop them getting the ball? Well, Duggan has to have a stormer, and the defensive mistakes will have to be irradicated. Possible yes, but I'd give us a 2/1 chance of winning this.

Trying to toss up what I want out of tonight.
A draw ideally but I wouldn't sniff at a Cork win.
The worrying thing is the way we are losing the plot at this stage and last night was a great example. Totally dominating in the first half and still scraped a win after being 4-1 up.
I really don't want to have to need anything come the Cork game at home on the last night.
So yeah, a draw tonight please lads.

Greg might be better for a bit of steel in the middle with Derek out but Gearoid and Shane have been playing well there together.

As a supporter, you're right to be bullish. Looking at this more dispassionately though, Mons are a much better side than they ever seem to get credit for. God knows they've been putting us to the sword for quite some time now.
With a weaker team than they are likely to have out tonight, they're drawn twice with Cork this season. And tonight, if stories are accurate, Cork will be weakened. It doesn't always work out logically, but you've got to think Mons should be good for a point at least, especially given Cork's track record with draws this season.
If I was a betting man, I'd be going with a narrow win for Mons.
As a supporter, you're right to be bullish.I'm trying to be positive, just like Roddy.
On current form you'd maybe think Mons are the better bet especially if we are weakened.
But then they've just come through a pretty tough encounter with Shels when our lads barely tried against Harps (no disrespect to Harps but we were awful)
We've drawn 2 of the last 16 since we played Mons last.

Actually, Nults has had a good season. He's made maybe 2 mistakes all season which have lead to goals. That isn't a disaster. His "mistakes" last Friday were caused by hesitation in defence. Kalen is the one I'm worried about if Kavanagh isn't there. I never thought I'd say this, but if Gavin Kavanagh plays, I'd give us a much better chance. And by all accounts, he may actually start.

From a Shels point of view either a draw or Mons to win. If Cork lose we will need 5 pts to be sure of going up, it will also keep Limerick in the hunt and (in my ideal world...!) they will turn over Mons in their game. Don't worry Cork fans, these things never work out for me!!

Our fans were divided last night between a Monaghan win and a draw as our preferred result. A Cork win would be a disaster so that is the most likely outcome.
I think a draw as it keeps both teams in our sights although hard to see where our other result will come from - if it's a draw we need another Cork draw or a Monaghan loss as well as us winning all 3 incl in Monaghan.
3-3 with loads of red cards.
