The population of Sligo Town including its environs according to wikipedia is 19402.
The average attendance last season was 1807.
According to my calculator that is 10.74%.
The only other club in the premier that comes near that id say is Dundalk.

But comrade Rasputin we most not forget about our the supporters from the countryside which makes up a fairly large percent of our fan base.

Very disappointed that no match programme even if a team sheet was available,

Bad form not to have a match programme as required in the Participation Agreement.

Not quite so bad, but very annoying, was the fact that the press box at Longford Town had no team lists until AFTER the game had started. So eventhough there were programmes, we could not put numbers against the names o the team lists in the programme.

The first goal was missed by those in the PB, while they were trying to write out the team lists from a bad carbon copy of the referee's team list, which had just arrived.

The pA was eventually in a position to give the team line-ups at half-time. NOT GOOD ENOUGH !!

Some very decent attendances there and if that trend can be kept up for most of the season we could be looking at the highest averages in years.
Every single year, someone says this. It never, ever, EVER keeps up. I don't know why people get so excited at the first gates of the season.

That is true.
Same could be said for most other clubs aswell I suppose which would make the figures look even worse.

[QUOTE=Lim till i die;1461397]I agree, both Liverpool and Dublin have huge traditions of success in Gaelic Games and football at the European level.

I don't think Liverpool would have done that well in Europe with average home attendances of 2,000. (I'd also be curious to know how many people at Liverpool's home games travel over from Dublin)
. And if every other country in the world played Gaelic Games, Ireland would be ranked about 35th in Europe, and Irish people would be following GAA teams from Manchester, Glasgow. and Liverpool.
The answer to to your original question is - Irish people are event junkies and have no imagination.

That's right: they need bells and whistles - I loathe the GAA and much of what it stands for but look at how they advertise. See that ****e last month with Jedward and four GAA matches in Croke Park?
The FAI could fire Trappatoni, hire Pat Fenlon, spend the millions saved on serious, sustained advertising - the level and quality of Guinness's ads for bogball, bogstickball and touch - pause - excuse to touch other men - ball(s).
10% of the population aren't even Irish - they could easily be got in the doors by advertising in Polish, Russian, French and Portuguese.
There is no good reason why that target market of 40,000 people in Dublin is not being aggressively tapped.
Or maybe there are three reasons? F A and I?

Sligo would be on their own for this type of ratio/pecentage, as even with the second highest crowds in the PD last season (1,900) the population of Dundalk is either 30k or 35k (including Blackrock) so it would be a much lower ratio/percentage than Sligo.

Pineapple I think I may have posted first about the good opening week crowds, I didnt say they would continue, just making a comment that 'it was a great start'

And it was.

Anyone know how this seasons opening weekend attendences compare to previous seasons? Would probably be easier to compare after 2 series of games bot i'd say we'll have a higher average this season with Derry replacing Fingal, now all we need is Limerick & Cork to replace UCD & Drogheda or bray :embarrassed:

Drogheda United v UCD -> 650 est (ET.ie)

Extratime.ie always seem to give their estimate for Drogs games at, or just before, KO. A lot of fans are still only coming in at that stage. Anyway the crowd for this game was more around the 850/900 mark.

Apparently despite the live tv Shamrock Rovers had more fans last weekend than any of the 3 traditional hurling teams - Kilkenny, Tipperary and Cork who were all at home.

Some information for traveling Hoops supporters tomorrow. There will be 520 tickets for the away section (360 adults) The ticket office will open at 430pm. Gardai were on the radio this morning warning about delays and were saying the will be doing random body searches but will most likely be only on Shamrock fans. I'd say it will be a sell out nearly 2000 tickets sold already excluding season tickets now the the FAI have reduced the Showgrounds to 4000.

Two lads at work were at the Drogs v UCD game and they seemed surprised that the figure was even as high as 650, they thought between 500 - 600 max.

Well, they'd be wrong. 666 people paid in (nice number!) with another 200+ added to that, as under 14's are allowed in free.
Anyone I talked to on the night was pleasantly surprised by the crowd, all things considered

Do you really expect people to believe that a member of the Gardai got on the radio to tell people that it would most likely be only shamrock rovers fans that will be searched going into the ground tomorrow?
This place gets worse by the day.

I think he's saying that the Gardaí say it'll be random, but in his opinion it'll probably just be away fans.

was at least 80 cork on the sullivan park side, and from the road you couldnt possibly see the only place people could take cover in which was in front of the clubhouse.

infact from the road its nigh all most impossible to see anything other than the lights
The man that does the gate is probably the most honourable man in football in Galway. To me it looked bang on. There was approx 200 on home side against the fence and another 100 or so in front of the clubhouse although its a strange place to stand cause you can only see one goal. It was a terrible night weatherwise. Again Gaffney put pressure on Cork when he came on, Hanley saved them with a fine reaction save in the first half and Conneely the cb was excellent at least the UTD scouts up there thought so

Im at a loss as to how Mervue and Salthill are allowed licenses to play in these fields. What the hell did Cobh do to not be allowed in.

The Jodi holds just under 2800. It was a lot more than 40% full. Sections F&G were also packed due to people standing. There was also about 60 Drogs in the Des Kelly. Based on what I saw myself, the figure in the Star is incorrect.

It's rare that attendances at domestic soccer matches surpass top-flight hurling or Gaelic football league fixtures, but that's what happened last weekend.

There was actually 2,000 Shams fans. The actual attendance was 6,200 but we're keeping the extra 20k or so for Joey and the players that didn't turn up pre-season because we couldn't pay their 'extra' wages during pre-season.

Honest.

That figure is so far off it has to be a typo. The 1911 figure is from extratime.
