This one really takes the cake: http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/cliftonville-increase-capacity-for-celtic-visit-1.1457826

Headline: "Cliftonville increase capacity for Celtic visit"

Opening line: "Celtic (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_organisation=Celtic&article=true) fans are set to receive extra tickets for their Champions League (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_organisation=Champions%20League&article=true) qualifier at Cliftonville (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_organisation=Cliftonville&article=true)."

No mention at all about how Cliftonville fans will receive even more extra tickets.

I think the headline is right. It won't be Cliftonville fans buying the extra tickets, they don't really have much support. Most likely Nordie Celtic fans will snap up any tickets.

I started wondering the other day, where our source of entertaining rubbish was going to come from on this forum since it seems to have disappeared somewhat into constant arguments, and uncommon clever discussions. We've had gold in the past here, granted I've only been part of the foot.ie fraternity for a few years, but since I've posted here, there's been a few geniuses on this forum. Now, I've got a new favourite.

Does anyone know how to post a poll on this forum - can I do it or does it have to be a moderator? I was thinking of doing a quick straw poll on how many people in the LOI forum started supporting football teams through LOI as opposed to the EPL/Football leaugue or other leagues. If somebody else knows how, feel free to make it in my stead.

edit: it's just out of interest, not through any "LOI is better" mentality

I came to the LOI through English football (and was even a ManUre fan for a while when I was a fresh-faced pre teen. The shame!)

I think as a kid we all looked toward the English football culture. It was the norm, and you weren't a football fan in your youth unless you watched the English leagues.
I grew up with Finn Harps, it's always been in the blood, but I never really distanced myself from English football until I was about 17 or 18.

90% of league of Ireland supporters would say take their money when you can cause it won't happen often. It can just be frustrating to see millions of euro sent abroad that could be pumped into improving our own game. In saying that the league of Ireland needs to help itself but its getting tougher and tougher by the year in my opinion. The teams that are trying to stay to strict budgets etc.... are stuck in a mid table to low position, can't get their crowds up because they aren't competing at the top and every year are losing players and being outbid for players. The clubs that are developing players that go abroad basically have to take whatever they can get because the English teams know how strapped for cash they are here. The FAI do nothin to help us and would rather we didn't exist and most the media feel similarly.

The league seems to only cater for a niche market of people that love live football and that's the way it will always be from now on with the massive availability of football on tv from around the world. It's cheaper to stay at home and watch a game, its fancier to look at, it is easier to find people to talk about it with and that can't be competed with.

Personally I can't stand watching football on telly. I usually get bored by half time and end up going off doing something else or flicking over the channel. On the very very rare occasion I'll watch a full match on telly.

YOu're basing this on 4/5 posters on a barely used forum? Go to a game and not a single person will mock you for it (in fact they won't even know you're an "outsider"). As ever 95% of LOI fans have another club they like somewhere else, 99% support the national team.

Saying that LOI fans don't want people to go to their games is frankly absurd and bears no resemblemce to reality (save for a handful of eejits).

The percentage of Man Utd fans who don't want day trippers going to their games is way, way more than LOI eejits too but somewhow that doesn't seem to stop people going there

Precisely. I've a lot of close friends who block my posts and invites on Facebook because I'm constantly onto them about going to Harps matches...to no avail.

Nothing would make me happier than to see all my Man Utd and Liverpool and Celtic friends all regulars at Finn Park. They don't even have to become any sort of 'superfan', but just to see a bit of live football.

The FAI do nothin to help us and would rather we didn't exist and most the media feel similarly.

Point taken on the latter, not the former.

The FAI try to help, but the clubs don't want to know unless it "guarantees" them a benefit. Look at the row over football in Galway. Look at the attempts to restructure the divisions. Nobody can agree, because they want something else.

The problems in the LOI, are often the club's own making.

Holy feck, tearing out my hair at the stupidity of a friend of mine, who is absolutely adamant that Harps wouldn't even beat a Donegal League team. That the Donegal League is of a higher standard than the League of Ireland First Division.

The Donegal League....which isn't even anywhere near the best junior league in the country.

Charlie Darwin
26/07/2013, 1:16 AM
Things like that are quite common. I remember reading some journal.ie comments (I know, my own stupidity) when Darren O'Dea signed for Metalurh lamenting him signing for a side in a useless league, "is there not some League of Ireland team that would sign him?" Nevermind that the Ukrainian champions trounced European champions Chelsea in the Champions League last season, to them it's not a league they've heard of so it's useless.
