Phew - for a moment there I was afraid this thread was going to stray off topic.
OK, OK... Thread for further discussion on the "myth" of Celticism here: http://foot.ie/threads/178331-The-quot-Myth-quot-of-Celticism?p=1677285#post1677285

Was just playing Football Manager and spotted a club called Leeds AFC, based in Cork. I don't believe there are any words.
Unless there actually is a place in Cork called Leeds.
Old thread on Leeds: http://foot.ie/threads/15554-Leeds-FC
There is also an Everton AFC in Cork. We have played them in the cup, and obviously we also played Home Farm Everton when they were around. Plus we played Everton in the UEFA cup. I wonder if we're the only club to have played competitively against all three.
It works the other way as well of course. There is a Finn Harps in Liverpool and another in County Down.

Harps actually played Leeds too, I believe in the late 90's. Can't remember exactly when, but I do remember going up to a FAI cup game against Leeds FC as a young fella and telling everyone in school about Harps playing Leeds in the cup, not realising at the time that it wasn't the real Leeds.
Having a look through the thread on Boards about the Suarez ban and I find myself wondering if we're really missing anything by not having these guys following Irish football. Absolute head bangers on there. If we just had a way to tax them to get a few quid extra into our clubs we'd have a happy medium.

Most people weren't born into loving football homes like you and I.Football became popular in Ireland in an age of television and marketing and so English broadcasters took the opportunity to expand their markets, these are the origins of the "barstooler". :tv:
I don't think the problem is that people are too lazy,I think it's a poor product poorly marketed.
The way too improve the product is a League above the LOI. Not necessarily,I know you guys really don't like provinces/franchises.There could easily be a relegation/promotion system between the LOI and the Celtic/British Isles/whatever league.
People should feel like they have to support this new fanged monster league either. The twitter tag #supportingLOI makes people presume the league is weak and it needs their support, not a good tactic IMO.
The national team is going no where until this domestic mess is sorted.
You're right. Bad marketing and the fact that all our TV is British based and we watched a lot of British channels in a time when football was getting good.
I was over at the Liverpool - Spurs game a few weeks back. I met Norwegian lads and they were bemused when I told them how low the attendances are in Irish football. Norway is about the same population as Ireland and there biggest club Rosenborg averages about 15k fans per game. Compare that to lets say Rovers with about 3k-6k.
Rosenborg have been in the Champions League a few times and there football is generally a good standard. One good thing though is that our National team is better and they even said so. This probably has to do with a lot of our players going to England when they come of age and even playing in the Championship, League One, League two etc.
So the talented players are there. The money isn't and that is why if you are any good you go England when you are younger and you build your career there. In Norway they can afford to hold onto the big players with money for a while then sell them to England when they come good and thats what drives the fans in.
Its a catch 22. We need players to attract fans but we need money to get the players and we need fans to get the money.

I would dispute that having our players go to England is reason we have a better national team than Norway.

FIFA say we are not, and UEFA say we are.
EDIT: If i'm looking at the right rankings - there seems to be loads out there.

Norway 30th, Ireland 39th. (http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/index.html)
But yeah, that jumped out at me from the post as well. I dunno if we're necessarily much worse than them, but I wouldn't say we're noticeably better than Norway.
Charlie Darwin
25/04/2013, 7:11 AM
Well you could say they haven't qualified for a tournament since 2000, in which time we've qualified twice.
pineapple stu
25/04/2013, 8:21 AM
You could. And you could point out that they're first seeds for the World Cup qualifying while we're third seeds. You could use stats to prove either side of it. I don't think there's that much of a difference between us tbh.

Probably not, but I think overall our team's been more successful and would appear better.

I actually don't care too much about people supporting English clubs but that is just embarrassing.

What part of England are they all from? RTE went all out bringing them across the water for Sunday night.
No probs if they supported LOI tbh but of course RTE have also played along with United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton managers in the background!

I sadly followed RTE Sport on Twitter and it's really disturbed me. I shouldn't be surprised but talk about loved up over the Premiership. Des Cahill on the sport in the morning creams himself over cross channel football too. All very sad.
I bet they all had a great day out.

The 2 lads in the Newcastle jersey were from Newcastle. I quite enjoyed it, one Arsenal fan forgot who they had played the day before and the City fan said if you just take United out of the league City would have won it, at least they know their stuff.

Somebody must know one or two of them. Chuck Des Cahill in there with Bill O Heirlihy and you'll have a full house. I think you could chuck Con Murphy and Peter Collin's in there too. I know Con goes to Tallaght Stadium (where he was captured in a death defying yawn) but I couldn't help thinking he was always so drawn to cross channel football and referred to 'City' or 'United' in relation to every conversation. I may be wrong and could be unkind to Con but it was generally what I heard. Collins is exactly the same and I always think if he had a choice on covering LoI or cross channel football he, and Con,would probably choose the latter.
I propose Des Cahill though as President of the Association of Barstoolers. Anyone want to second it?

Sorry Moose, but such an important position requires the best - step forward John 'Man yoo' Delaney, president of assosiation of barstoolers (IRL).*

But... but... I didn't pick my team - they kind of picked me. It was just coincidence that they happened to be winning lots of games, allowing me to go into school and crow about it with the other fans of us. Fate is a wonderful thing. It could just as easily have happened that thousands of Irish kids were picked by Macclesfield. I'm a loyal lifelong fan of us, supporting us through thick and slightly-less-thick.

Definately the most annoying thing (and its a long list ) about EPL 'fans' is they use of 'us' or 'we'. Drives me absolutely mad

One of my favourites was the bloke I worked with who thought it was the best thing ever to walk around the office in his Liverpool polo shirt, taunting his Man Utd "supporter" colleagues by singing "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I support Man U."
I should probably point out that he wasn't from Liverpool.

I'm in my mid-40s. The English football-following people I know break into three distinct groups:
(1) Those 5 years or more older than me - Leeds fans.
(2) Those less than 5 years older than me, or less than ten years younger than me - Liverpool fans.
(3) Those more than ten years younger than me - Man U fans.
There are of course exceptions to these rules ( a smattering of Aresnal and Chelsea fans, to leaven the EPL bread), and they are generally the people who follow in their father's or mother's footsteps by being fans of their parents' clubs, but as a general schema, its about right.
There is one poor deluded fool who lives near me who considers himself a Blackburn Rovers fan on the strength of their fleeting daliance with being a decent team. I once asked him about Burnley. "Who?"

I'm 25. Most of the lads I know are into their Liverpool and Manyoo. Then there are the snobs, who say they support a trendy European team, Barcelona or Real mostly, the odd Bayern "fan", and one lad who follows Inter, because his uncle bought him the shirt when he was younger (and who says it's more legitimate for him to support Inter than it is for me to support Bray, because his uncle lived in Milan for 25 years, and at this stage, I'd only lived in Bray for 19!)
I was the only one who followed an LOI club. There was a guy in the year above me in school who supported Shels, and a teacher who was a Bohs fan, but apart from that, nothing. I only started going to Bray games after I caught the live football bug from my dad taking me to see Stoke. Attending an LOI game isn't a thought that crosses the mind of most people in the country unfortunately.
