I think the Germans have made a massive mistake. Emotion, history everything rolled up in a pilgrimage to Stuttgart. They apparently tried to minimise the travelling fans by picking a city without direct flights to Ireland but forgot about Euro88.

Anyway 48,500 won't even be close enough to satisfy the demand for tickets particularly if the Germans want to keep a few for themselves. :D

if this is the case they obviously didnt do much research. no direct flights to Basle but about 14,000 of us turned up in 2003. tickets will depend on how the germans wc goes..... if they do very well then tickets will be hard to get but if they have a poor wc we could end up getting a better than expected allocation.

for amsterdam 2000 the dutch had a bit of a euro championship hangover and the stadium wasnt full that night. seem to remember tickets going on sale on the day to Irish fans. obviously wont have as big a support traveling as paris but i'd still say about 10,000 will want to go.

I would put the figure wanting to go to this one as 20,000+. I think the Stuttgart factor will encourage more to attend. It is a wekeend game in early September and the weather should be great. Munich, Frankfurt, Dortmund or Berlin would be more accessible but in reality any German city is relatively easy to reach these days.

The key question really is how will the tickets be sold. If they go on public sale then they will be snapped up.

we've always found ways of getting tickets before. i'm sure thare are lots of german contacts that we can call upon!! not sure more than 10,000 of us will go to be honest. depends on how our friendlys go etc before sept. i think munich or berlin would have been far bigger draws to the day trippers

In light of the above can you tell us where the stadium is in relation to the city centre?.....also maybe you could tell me where my hotel (Kongress Hotel on Siemensstrasse) is in relation to the stadium and the city centre? Cheers.

You're well enough placed. The stadium is in Bad Cannstatt north east of the center and about a 10 minute journey on the S-bahn from the main train station in the centre of the city (Hauptbanhof). Your hotel is in an area called Feuerbach which is about two minutes from the Hauptbanhof by U-bahn (streetcar). All the public transport is good and very frequent.

Depends on what you're looking for, but it's true this is very central.....so you are close to all the city center nightclubs and bars....some are open till 5:30am.........However (and again it depends on your tastes) I would stay away from here until very late and just go to the pubs within walking distance of the stadium ie Bad Canstatt and Stuttgart Ost. The crack will be much better and authentic Stuttgart pubs. You can still hit the center at 1 or 2am if you're still up to it!

ps.....quite a few "rote Lichter" within short walking distance of this hotel too.

Thanks for the web details Kingdom.

I've just booked the trip and now all I need and hope for is a ticket:ball:
For the 2 trips to Basel I flew Ryanair from Dublin via Stansted to Friedrichstafen, which is in Germany. This time I'm doing the same as there is a train connection to Stuttgart. So here's the details

Dublin Stansted
Out Thursday 31st August @ 6.25 a.m
Return Monday 4th September @16.00

Total Cost (including credit card fee and taxes) €61.46

Stansted Friedrichshafen
Out Thursday @ 9.50 am
Return Monday @ 12.50

Total Cost (including credit card fee and taxes) £73.98 STG (about €110)

It would appear from the Ryanair web site that there are flights out available on the Friday also and back on the Sunday but the prices are slightly different

There is a train journey of 2 hours 15 minutes with plenty of connections and given the German trains on the 2 Basel trips there will be no problems.

Using Kingdom's website above I booked a single room in the Hansa Hotel for the 4 nights for a total cost of €244

We've booked to go via liverpool with Ryanair and onward to Cologne with easyjet, leaving Thursday back Monday. Cost was less than €140 each. German based Irish friends are meeting us in Cologne for onward train journey to Stuttgart with a few cases of good german pilsner to sooth the dryness!

Got 3* hotel for €39 twin room per night including breakfast. It's on Landhausse Str. So Greenbod any idea of whats available bar wise in that area? Seems its only 500 metres from Stadium according to the hotel wedsite.

Ooops, Definitely a typo on my part. It's €69 for the room for two with full hot and cold buffet breakfast. A few others have booked it too. It looks ok and really its a place to put away the clothes and to hang the head at night.

For relatively cheap accommadation in Stuttgart check out ibishotels.com
Weve secured a room in the city for €69 per night Ibis hotels are generally good quality basic hotels...bed, clean toilet...what more do you want....

Well done to those that got the cheap flights and prepared to 'train or bus' it into town. Im getting too old for that!!.On friday, I booked with Air France a flight from Dublin to Paris, pick up more passengers and onto Stuttgart. Return price €228 each. Therefore herself and meself total cost of weekend - €594.....wonder how the packages will compare. I think its interesting that they are only taking names at moment... were they burnt on the Cyprus trip??

I think its more the punters are burnt each time. The agents never come out with prices till a few months before the matches. Id say there a pretty unhappy bunch given we've the easiest group in years for travelling.

Definitely a good one if you want to impress somebody special in your life.

Sure beats the tent in the Bad Caanstat campsite I stayed in in 1988.

Apparently the person that made the decision re Stuttgart is Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, who is president of the German FA and was once president of vfB Stuttgart and Culture Minister and finance minister of the Baden-Württemberg of which Stuttgart the capital.

I was taking a look earlier at the website of the stadium. You can open a map of the seating arrangements and then click on a particular block to see the kind of view you can expect. If, as is normally the case with away supporters, we are placed behind a goal, the view is going to be brutal. It looks as though the first row of seats is about 20 or 25 yards behind the goal. You'll actually be better off if you're further back as you will be looking down on the pitch as opposed to being at ground level. Whoever thought that putting a running track around a football pitch was a good idea must never have been to a game in their lives.

Of course all this only become relevant if you're lucky enough to get a ticket!

Yes, have to agree with you there. If you are in the bottom few rows you cant actually see the ball crossing the goalline because of the advertising hoardings!! For two of the goals in Brussels play-off ’97 I didn’t know goals where scored until the crowd reacted as was in about row 5 and couldn’t see the lines over the hoarding.
Yokohama ’02 and Tel Aviv ’05 were equally as bad for being miles from the action. We can complain about current state of Lansdowne but at least you are right beside the action in most cases

I could see ok in Brussels as I was up towards the back so I was looking down on the pitch from a height but in Yokohama I was nearly at the very front so I was close enough to being at ground level (thankfully 2 of our goals were scored at our end so I had a great view of those!) and could not really see what was going on at the far end of the pitch. Having said all this though I would gladly settle now on a ticket for pretty much anywhere in the ground.

Had great views in Brussells Yokahama and Tel Aviv and would be quite happy for similar view in Stuttgart but beggars cant be choosers so ill take anything!! Reckon at least 15,000 will travel with only 5,000 tickets. Hope we get tickets for the German end as well or we're knackered

Brussels in 97 was the first away match id ever bin 2, at the tender age of 11, my dad brought me over. remember I was pretty close to the ground so had a pretty crap view, cudnt even see their winning goal (luc nillis was it?) but for most of it i sat up the stand a bit on sum steps. Its a nightmare bein at pitch level in grounds with running tracks. hopefully well all be standin like in paris so the front few rows can just make their way back and join the masses further up

You can apply through the fai but unless you are block booker you have little or no chance of getting anything.

Your best bet is to keep an eye on the German FA's website and see if they put tickets on general sale. Thats what happened with Paris the last time and the irish bought them by the bucketload. The german equivalent of ticketmaster would be selling them. It could be tough to get them online though if the demand is strong. For Basel '03 the tickets sold out in no time and the websites were crashing cos the demand was so high. But the demand for the german game probably wont be as bad especially if the germans do badly at the world cup.

Word of warning on this site. Some good hotel deals, however take note of the cancellation charges (in case your circumstances change). If you were to book today and cancel tomorrow you would be liable for 10% of the total costs....this % increases the closer you get to your check in date.

Whereas if you book direct with the hotel you can generally cancel up to 24hrs before arrival with no cost implication.
