The lads are badly needed based on the balance of the team on Sunday. I was very surprised that your team finished the game with five centre-halfs (JL, EMcH, PB, LJ,& O'C) what is the manager thinking, is he been told who not to drop. Looks that way on Sunday.
The gaffer could only work with the players at his disposal.

Are you telling us that you are moving up a standard and joining the EIRCOM LEAGUE. Well done.
Not an immediate priority but a possible long term priority plan. First up is the new super stadium in Mountbrowne.

You should have seen Horkan's face after he missed your last Peno & handed Celtic the Cup (3 times in 4 seasons), now that would have won your prize.
However, I didn't see any photograph of dejected players on the local media. What did you think of Padraig Burns' summary on the CT?

Its a summary of what Rafa is hoping to achieve, squad rotation or the need to in Westports case. In this case it worked successfully, for other teams including Liverpool is has fallen on its face.
It calls for strong players and characters to be able to step in for 1 match and sit on the bench for the next, the baby faced assassin been a prime example of this.
Westport have to be commended for this, it has worked out well this season, will it work next or work again, who knows.
Have you any plans online or dates on the developments for the pitches TB?

Yes PB summary for once was well balanced and not a PR excerise for Utd. The one issue he did not mention was the lack of new young player coming into the squad. I very disappionted with a number of the Utd players last Sunday based on how I have seen them play in the past, maybe an off day. I was surpised that he picked out BK as a new Centre-half, pace would not be his strongest point. With McL, DS & DC coming back, this will give the team the attacking option that was badly missed last Sunday. I do fancy Celtic (if U-21 players are used) & Utd to have a big say in the Connacht Cup but based on Sunday well off the pace for a tilt at the FAI Cup.

Who will be the next manager of Westport United after today's reportedly dramatic events with the gaffer? Will the dream team of Cuey and Bunsy make a comeback? Any confirmation on BO'C's departure?

Learned today that no job is safe in football. Two weeks ago its was Jossie. Now its been confirmed to me that Brendan O'Connor has been shown the door, after failing to win the A.I.B. Cup. Despite he having won The Super League, and westro Cup.
Can't comfirm, I have reason to believe, that number of players were not happy in the way he ran the team, by playing himself or his style of management.
It appears its a sad day one way or another.
Hope he Brendan gets back in the game

I heard that a number of supporters were not happy with his team selection last Sunday and some players were not happy with him as their manager. Will Cuey leave Westport GAA team after getting them relegated out of the Senior Championship, didnt see him as a man that would run from a challenge. Would be great for Utd to get him back with PB. By the way what happened to your Galway player JO'B, he didnt last long. What targets will the new manager be set?

What ever the out come is there egg on those faces who fired him B.O'C
At the end of the day the manager has to be able to manage without interference was it some supporters were not happy continue paying him, so they want to call the shots, on who plays.
He only lost on penalty shoot out.
would he been sacked if he won? I dare say yes.

Sounds like some of the players had the knives out for the manager !!! What sort of a committee would listen to these spineless players who were not happy to win a league & cup double....
It's not often you get a chance to win an FAI Junior cup,and when you do win it,it requires alot of luck along the way.Was he sacked because he did'nt win it ?
Sounds like some of the older players are lookinng for the job themselves ??
You don't have to be liked to be a manager !! You have to do the job to the best of your ability..God help who takes up the position next .
Sad day for Westport, sad when a committee listens to a shower of cry babies who met a manager who did'nt take any of there bu*ls*it..

Look beyond the results, Westport won the title and cup in a league where the standard has dramatically dropped. Ballina would have won it if their squad had been bigger. Westport have been playing shakily all season with the ball spending more time in the air than on the ground, our pass and move football is gone due to it not being coached in the players, we spend more time trying to win back posession than attacking, I dont remember the last time the goalkeeper did not take a long goal kick ,if a team are going to training and just having a jog and a kickabout with no coaching of set piece work, the results are evident on the pitch. If the manager is not drilling a system of play into the players in training ,then the team goes into games playing haphazardly.
If the team continue to play to the level that they have been playing the team will get slaughtered in external competitions, and will be found out.
Brendan had one of the most talented sides in the country and if you cant acheive something (even with injuries, there were a few replacements in the B squad but he never went to the B games, he should have - Chris Ryder - as Cam was injured, Ronan OMalley- as Gerry is in OZ , and Busty - their best player this season, comes to mind) there is no hope for you.

Westport were the team with lots of injurys all season and not Ballina Town.If you look at the results they got and just checked Soccerbot there and if you add the cup games they won 22 games from 26.Also best Definsive record in the league and scored a lot of Goals too
Not a bad run from a decimated squad all season.
He was at a few of the B games and from what i hear did get regular reports from the B team management on players as couldnt travel down to all games from Galway like
Who in the B team was better than the players he picked for the A team as a matter of interest
Would you have played 2 very inexpierienced players on the wings as in R O'Malley + C Ryder??
Busty was there best player probably but is he a better full back than Joe Lawless or Colin Navin or a better Centre half than Lovejoy,Eoghan,Peter,Austin
Sure the games they played they easily created chances in double figures every match and it was due to poor finishing - is that the Managers fault??
Sure he achieved a league + Cup double and nearly a treble with an injury hit squad - what would he achieve with a fully fit Squad then??

Utd had one of the one of the most talented squads in the country, but players form & attitude changes (as seen in the AIB Cup Final), especially after winning the holy grail. Westport supporters think that the team should be palying the way they did in 2005 and have the same team for ever more, but that is dream land. The reality is that Utd have not added enough quality players to the this squad and once they are missing 3/4 players they start crying that they can put out their best team (always going back to 2005), instead of bringing on the young talent at the club. Look at all the players that were not available to Celtic since 2005 and I dont see us whinging about it.
I saw your B squad this year good team but did not see one player good enough to make your A team or would have made a difference.

What happened to the Van!! and the free phone

Gentlemen, Brendan OConnor was manager for Westport United, a role which he got paid for and was sponsored a van. At the end of each season his contract is up for review, this was agreed with him when he first took up the position. Westport United, as an employer (or any employer) have the right not to renew his contract once it expires, and, they chose to exercise this right and not renew it.
With regard to the team/ committee moaning etc, Brendan chose to speak with the papers about the issue, not the club or the players, the matter should have been kept internal. As regards the number of players involved, dont believe all that you read.
The players were not happy with regard to the way the team was run in comparison to the way it was previously, and they, have the right for the good of the club and the team to voice their concerns, I am not condoning player mutiny in any way but opinions have to be taken on board.
Jack D, We have the best defensive record, and rightly so, because we have the best defenders, in the league, and lots of them, if there was one thing we should have been doing is defending. Considering we had at least seven of them on the pitch at once for most games.
As for the B team players the three I have mentioned have been playing regularly, so they are hardly wet behind the ears, as regards physicality I am sure they would endure as good a kicking in the premier as the super league, one of them at least could have been on the bench for some of the games and brought on in the second half, Busty is as good as Alan McLoughlin or Ray (when fit).
Ronan OMalley could have been brought to the bench instead of Colm Keane and Chris Ryder could be brought on and let Colin Nevin go back to left full where Austin has been playing, which is not his best position. Westport have been lacking the creative players out wide all season.
These lads could have been brought on and need to be, the manager was told who was playing well (they must be, look at their league position) and, as manager he chose not to, that was his choice but not now. These lads will be given opprutunities to prove themselves now, and they will step up to the plate.
He had a fit squad against Heatmerchants who were a very average team last season and how did he do?
Closing time: If you did not have players available since 2005 there was no crying from you guys, you didnt have to, GD got former LOI players and players from other mayo league clubs to fill the gaps in your squad, and you still could not win the Connacht or the Junior Cup. I have to say Athenry played some great football that day.......

Billy C, there is another reason why he was sacked, but I wont be allowed to post it on the site, all the players know and they do not want him back.
It was very serious and went beyond his duties as manager. It is not a laughing matter.
The news is around The Port as to why he was sacked and it will take a few days to filter through. Everyone will understand. He had to go.
