Anyone interested in discussing Westport United FC on foot.ie? Its a chance to exchange views on the happenings at the oldest football club in Connacht at junior and underage level. Forumites like gnasher and mpondo would surely be interested in this thread. I actually have a way stronger Westport United connection than what I was prepared to reveal over the last year and I do follow the club.;) :D

If you are in Westport, you can pick up on merchandise for the club. The main place is Abacus on Bridge Street where you can get replica jersies, mugs, pennants, t-shirts, caps, polo shirts, etc. In some pubs and shops, you can get the official DVD on Westport United's FAI Junior Cup success over Waterford Crystal. It is titled "From The Sports Park to Buckley Park". It is a double DVD set. In Ring For Coffee on Market Lane and some places, you can get the charity CD called "Westport's Call", recorded by Frank McCaffrey and the Westport United football team and the money raised goes to cancer research. In Elvery's Sports on Bridge Street, you can get Westport United sweat shirts. From some Westport United committee members, you can get collages of the historic FAI Junior Cup Run of 2004-2005.

Away to S&F United in the Westaro Cup tomorrow night at 7:30. Brendan may get a win there. Danny Fadden may be in goal as Eamon Scahill is cup tied. Currently looking for a keeper as Martin McGreal is injured and forced to retire from the game, Michael Wallace is injured also and Eamon Scahill is off to the USA. There is a young prospect in 17 year old Darren Carroll, but is it the right time for him to make the step up?

Thunder you might comfirm is it true that M McDonnell who works with Hastings car sales in Westport took the car off The Mayo YOUTHS which was been used for bring football gear all over England and Ireland and given to Westport MANAGER for his use as part of the deal for him to manage Westport Utd.
If this is true shame on your club for denying the youths of our county and addvertising Hastings Cars Sales on the Van all over England and Ireland or even Europe some sponorship that was, to take advantage of this situation on the Chairman of the Mayo youths.
I sum it up as a pitty you couldn't find another way to look after your manager. :

Beaten 1-0 by Ballyheane through a penalty. Dessie O'Malley had a penalty saved and Ballyheane should have got another penalty. Experimented on a 4-1-4-1 system with Danny Scahill playing the holding role in front of the back four. Played some good football in the first half but once Ballyheane shut up shop after the goal, we never looked like breaking them down due to Peter Bourke's excellent marshalling of the defence and partly by not throwing caution to the wind. A couple of quick one-two's between the full back and the centre half may have prised open the Ballyheane defence. Anyhow, the Westaro "Mickey Mouse" Cup will not be on the sideboard for another season. Clubs like Westport United and Castlebar Celtic, with all due respects, should not be aiming for that trophy unless they had teams that were not good enough for the major honours in the game.

The club have appointed John Moran as the new underage development officer.
Westport United is delighted to announce the appointment of John Moran as the Youth Development Officer. It is a progressive appointment as the club are looking to build for the future and it is seen as a step in the right direction for underage coaching and development. John will help out at various training sessions within the club underage structure and will liase with all the coaches/managers in the system. John is a Level One coach and sat his exams with the English FA in Aldershot last April. It is also hoped that it may be progressed into visiting the schools in the locality to foster club/school relations in a proactive manner and help along with the kids there. I think it is a step in the right direction for the club as it has suffered severely at underage level for a long time and it is only beginning to recover again, hence the lack of players making the breakthrough for the club over the last four years. It is important that the club actively develops on the underage structure to help it in the long term.

It has not been a brilliant start. Easily disposed of Killala 6-1 on Thursday night but there hasn't been any five star performances yet. As for players leaving and players coming in, it may happen, it might not. Definitely looking for a goalkeeper anyway and more than likely he will be an outsider. Injuries, well when you look at Danny Scahill, it is more or less the same injury all the time. Alan McLoughlin came on against Ballyheane and aggravated his hamstring injury. Gerry McLoughlin got injured from a bad tackle against S&F but has this mantra of rushing back into action. Goals for the future from what I gather is to win the Big Four of the AIB Cup, Elvery's Super League, Connacht Cup and FAI Junior Cup. The Sports Park is definitely not up to standard for Eircom League football IMO and if we were considering going into the Eircom League, we would need a solid underage structure. Having said that, we are turning the corner there by appointing a Youths Development Officer. A number of people around the town have been disappointed with BOC so far.
