These players will not be getting paid.

Exact same knowledge. The club are hardly going to finance payment to players as they have a better priority of investment like a new ground.

By the way what do you intend to do with the 10,000 euros apart from buying toilet rolls.

€10,000 on toilet rolls? That sounds like a diarrhea epidemic in Westport!! The money will have the pitch really manicured and so pristine that you could play lawn bowls on it!!;) :D

i know of a few anyway. my brothers team is managed by one of the kids parents and to be honest i woudnt say the parent has any qualifications from what i have seen of his managerial ability. he also plays his child all the time even though there are far better players on the bench. its just not fair to the kids and something must be done.

that issue was brought up at the agm by john moran and nothing has been done about it.the committee dont care about underage teams except the income they bring.nothing will ever be done to coach the youth properly while the present committee is in charge

Does your brother get a game for his team? Is he playing this year? It would make sense that these parents, who give up their free time to volunteer, work with teams that their sons are not on, and it removes a burden when selecting a team. They will not then be left wide open to allegations of favouritism.

Thought Id post questions on Westport on your thread. Thanks for reply on Conn Cup thread. You appear to be a knowledge on Westport FC. Do you mind if I pick your brains. 1. I know it would now be 20 years old, but is there anyway I could get copy of the 75TH Anniversary Publication ? 2. Do you know who beat you in Conn Senior Final 90/91 ? 3. Would you have any other data on Conn Senior League & Senior Cup finals during the period that Westport were involved in those compititions. 4. any plans re club website ?
You may be interested that Shels played against Ballina in 1908. May have been the intent of the then IFA to try and spread the game throughout Ireland. Appreciate any help.

I think Noel Duffy may have copies left of that book. We lost to Salthill Devon 1-0 in the final. I wouldn't have any other data on the CSL. There is a website due to be launched within the next week AFAIK. It was another 53 years before Ballina Town were formed-by a Westport man in 1961.

That was a joke!!! but just goes to show what I have always said about Westport.they are just a team, never make a club.
It takes people with vision and guts to make a club, it appears all they able to do is use what money is available and spend it on the juniors.
When you see they just managed to get a lousy €10,000 goes to show for main town in Mayo the vision they have which is bottom of the pile ,If I were the club to receive 10,000 euros I would be embarrassed say the leased.
It also show how much intelligence the committee has.
If I were that committee, which I am not I would resign before some one ask me to.
Good luck with the development :o

ya he eventually forced himself on to the starting team even though he should have been there for the start. i agree with your point that parents shouldnt be allowed manage teams in which their own sons are members of. they should be applauded for giving up their time to manage the kids etc. and in fairness its not as if they can say to their own son that theyre not playing as it would cause family friction. the committee needs to do something

TB- Wee debate for you when u next on line. Confirmed present club founded 1911, though can trace history back to 1889. Your opening post on this thread caims yourself as Connaughts oldest club (dare say you know whats coming !). How does Castlerea founded 1886 not beat you to be oldest Junior club in Connaught. Have other questions but will wait to see if you can acquire club history. Must admit had a gander once at da sportsground. Tidy like facillities, large open air concrete stand/banking between road level and pitch level. As good as anything I've seen of the very few seen round Ireland.

Well, 0-0 against Celtic.:ball: Wasn't at the game. What was the lowdown? Saw the second half of the B team last night and I must say it was a great comeback from 0-2 down at half time to win 5-3 against Ballyglass. James "Atmazidis" Fahy grabbed a hat trick (a certain supporter vowed that he would stay off the gargle if that would happen!! ) while Tomas McGing and Ronan O'Malley capped off the scoring. Great to see some of the younger guys given a chance with Micheal Gibbons in goal, Christopher Ryder at right back and Tomas McGing on the right side of midfield. There was the experience from Eamon Daly and Joe Kelly in the middle of the park. There was a good crowd too!!:D

was at the match on sunday and to be honest it was as bad a derby game as i've seen for some time.neither team seemed to have any great fluidity about their play at all although i'd have to say that i thought that westport undoubtedly had the better of celtic without ever really creating all that much bar a fantastic run from colin navin in the first half where he won two tackles before playing a one-two and setting up david hoban who narrowly missed.that was about it though-was hardly worth the fiver admitance.

Is your affiliation to your club or your league? You seem to have a thing about celtic and dykes. Should'nt you be getting behind all the mayo clubs in any competition, regardless of who you dislike? Surely the F.A.I. junior cup is the target for all clubs, not just celtic? Shout from the rooftops what you think a whole clubs opinions are because it sounds good? People on this forum have very short memories. I seem to remember westport actually losing the semi-final that year. I dont ever hear you on about that? Does that tarnish their achievement in your eyes?:ball:

i must admit when we got knocked out of the fai (ballyheane )when we had that great run 2 year ago, i was routing for Westport or Celtic to go as far as they could in the competition, when it comes to the Fai its not about the local rivals and hoping they get knocked out, i ask the question ,would you like to see a team like Pike Rovers or Ballymun win it out,?? or mabye a colleague you possible work with playing with top mayo team who has the chance to bring amature soccer's greatest prize trophey down through the border of mayo, bringing with it acknowledgment of how far Mayo Soccer has progressed, and bright future it holds....!! Westport United has shouted a serious warning to Super League contenders on Saturday evening after wiping the floor with Glenhest Rovers on a 6-1 scoreline. Vinny got his hat-trick (and another matchball!!:D ), Spiderman netted a brace while Keano got the opener. Won the game without nine of what you would call the regulars and with some stunning, creative football. Burkey and Austie are forming a useful partnership while Mozmir "Big Mike" is comfortable in goal. Once the established order return, Westport United will look to be the force for all teams to aspire to!!:)

The 20th Anniversary Reunion was a great hit on Friday night in the Castlecourt Hotel. The food was superb, the website launch was composed with innovation by popular TD, Michael Ring. Noel Duffy, John Herrick, Tom Tarmey and Sean McLoughlin all received presentations and Noel Duffy finally shared the 21 year old secret in the recruitment of John Herrick as Westport United manager. The stalwarts of that occasion were in attendance with the players of the calibre of Ronnie Ring, Danny McLaughlin, Liam Halpin, Ger and Pat Duffy, Michael Horan, John McKenna, Bobby Walsh, Ollie Cunningham, Joe Moran, Joe Mulroy and Peter Collins. Famous supporters of the time included Kitty Horan, Peter Ryan, Joe Ring, Aiden King and Padraig Kelly. It was worth the admittance fee and there was a very good raffle too. Eamon and Kevin supplied the music while DJ Mandy Bird spun the discs.
