The draw for the First Round and Quarter-Finals of the 2011 Setanta Sports Cup will take place on Monday, 13th December 2010 at Belfast City Hall, Donegall Square at 3.00 pm.
Clubs in the first round draw include:
FAI – Bohemians, Dundalk, St. Patrick’s Athletic and Sporting Fingal
IFA – Cliftonville, Linfield, Lisburn Distillery and Portadown
Clubs seeded to and in the quarter final draw include:
FAI – Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers
IFA – Crusaders and Glentoran
---
Personally I'll be hoping for Distillery or Cliftonville in the first as we haven't played there yet in the Setanta. Similarly would like Crusadesr in the 2nd.
Dundalk/Linfield might be the one the authorities want to see least, with the winners to play Rovers

If Bohs do a Shels, who's next in line? This is going off the 2009 season, yeah? It's Galway if that's the case I think; us if it's going off 2010 placings.

Derry City from 2009 don't exist anymore so it would be Galway

Its the Setanta. Normal rules don't exist.
Basically goes
1) Pats must be in. Regardless of how they get in (brought in in 2007)
2) Derry must be in. Regardless of how they get in
3) Under no circumstances are Galway to get in.

Dundalk vs Linfield!... In Oriel.. With Gerry Adams present as honorary guest as TD-elect for Louth.. Now that would be interesting!

Looks like its going by this years placings as Sporting Fingal would have been in the quarters as Cup winners otherwise but Sligo takes that place in the draw along with Rovers.

It looks like the LOI went on this season but the IL didn't, which is very strange, as Linfield should also be seeded directly into the quarter finals..

Interesting bit of detective work. Suits me too as that'd make us next in line. :)

Are all rounds knockout this year and none of the group rubbish??

It's all knockout. The 4 winners from the first round join the 4 seeded teams (the 2 league and cup winners) in the quarter finals.

I think it's a good move for this competition to move to a knock-out format.
Prize money allocated as follows:
Winner: € 50,000
Runner-up: € 30,000
Defeated semi-finalists: € 15,000 each
Defeated Quarter Finalists: € 10,000 each
Teams defeated in Round 1: € 7,500 each

Thats decent money and should make clubs take it a bit more serious.
I know clubs and fans look down on this competition. But in fairness we give out yards on here about how the national league and teams get very little media coverage. Setanta Ireland is the only 'Irish' recognised sports channell and when they have live games it is a very professional show. Any positive media covergage can only be good for the game.

More serious than the previous years when the money was better?

I think in the past few years the top clubs had ideas above their station, as in the money wasnt that big of a deal with the ever fabled European qualification around the corner.
With greater financial reality settling into the league surely the top clubs wont turn their noses up at that money.

Being reported that Linfield may not enter the competition due to Setantas insistance on "the authority to shift fans around the grounds to accommodate the TV cameras."

Some people will do anything to get the shift.
Could make some interesting TV mind you.

To be honest I feel that this tournament is a complete waste of time. When it started off it was a great tournament that had some fantastic fixtures but between the numerous reformating, the withdrawal of Derry and Cork mid way through the last tournament the Setanta Sports died on its arse.

Changing the format hasn't helped. The initial two groups of 4 seemed to have worked ok. I didn't like the 3 groups of 3 format at all. I think this new format will work. We'll find out next year when it's put into practice. It's good to have more clubs involved and good for clubs in European competition to get a few games in the two-leg format early in the season ahead of the summer and the various qualifiers.
I'd like to see Welsh clubs included in this competition in the future, if it is practical. All 3 leagues need more support. They could work more together in trying to promote their leagues.

Has to do better than previous format. last year(s) was Bohs debut season in the SETANTA and was looking forward to it. Very, very disappointed at the low level of interest in the competition.

We get Glentoran if we get past Linfield.
Delighted with the draw...hopefully a big travelling support from Dundalk...bus escorts from police i presume
Yeah, we got them the last couple of years. Buses stopped at some retail park outside city. Police guard into another retail park near ground, and through walkway into away stand. Very weird the first time there with armed guard for first 20 minutes (until they decided nothign was happening)

I hope there will be no need for a game-long armed guard when we travel to Windsor.. however im not going to bank on it.. The last time we met there was unholy war in Dundalk.. I'd like to think people have grown up and moved on.. But knowing certain elements of our support, i doubt that has happened.. Heres hoping anyway!

From the club's facebook:
Sligo Rovers Have been drawn to face either Linfield or Dundalk in the quarter-finals of the Setanta Sports Cup. The first leg will be in the Showgrounds on March 7th with the away leg on March 14th.
Crusaders website say they dn't know who they're playing in quarters as it will depend on what Northern teams are left...

dunno about that, Linfield hate travelling. Isn't Dundalk the shortest distance they could go?
Yep, but the one that neither FA or police force wanted.

Looking forward to welcoming Linfield to Dundalk. I only hope some clowns of our support treat their supporters with the respect they deserve.
Would have no probs with heading to windsor as numerois irish clubs have gone their in this comp without incident.
Happy we got Linfield because we are going to have to put the events of 79 behind us. Since then Dundalk and linfield have done the dunfield youth project and some previous dundalk side have since travelled to windsor and those games have passed off without incident.
I just hope every nut within 25 mile radius of dundalk looking for trouble stays away.

As I understand it both websites are correct - in that the draw for the quarter finals is variable depending on who wins the First Round ties.
From Dundalk's perspective is definately Glentoran in the event of progressing.
If Linfield win out they play Sligo.
Who Sligo play if Dundalk win....thats beyond me!

First time we have gotten a Dublin team so its a good draw for that reason, there should be a good crowd of Reds making the trip down the M1 down for this. Will be good craic I hope.
