I think Sligo had the same attitude for last years' semi too. Close to full strength teams out but it clearly wasn't a 'do or die' attitude.
Im nearly certain Dodge we had a very weakened team out against yee in the semi last year.
After being knocked out Cook went on record stating he wont ever do the same again and play such a weakened team in a competition we could have won.

Kelly; Whelan, Davoren, Peers, Foran; Ryan, Marshall (Dillon 64), Amond, Doyle (Blinkhorn 64), McCabe, Doninger.
That was the first 11. Whelan, Marshall and Doninger were the 'weak' links.

A couple of quotes from the IT article perfectly back up Sligoman's claims (and indeed others) that not everyone views it as highly as Dundalk
Pete Mahon made four changes for the match, perhaps looking to shake things up a little in the wake of Friday’s narrow defeat by Drogheda but the absence of players like Vinny Faherty or, initially at least, Dave Mulcahy suggested the Dubliners do not view becoming all-Ireland champions as their main priority.
Paul Cook’s modifications to his starting line were even more comprehensive, with just four of the 11 who took the field in Bray at the weekend featuring from the outset.

Are the northern teams really that ****e or are they not taking the competition seriuosly?
When we were at Windsor for the first leg v Linfield, I said to my mate when we went 3-1 up 'this crowd would only be as good as about 6th in our PD' he replied 'Hang on a minute, we came 6th last year' !!!!
I did think before that only Glentoran and Linfield would be PD standard in our lge, their teams this year would suggest they might only be of mid table PD standard in LOI. Whatever about that, I can tell you for certain the teams in the IL Prem from 4th place downwards are probably similar in standard to our First Div. Their FD is not even worth commenting on.
Finally re Prize money, I think a lot of teams under estimated the value, for us, we will collect more just by getting to the final than if we finished the highest we can this year in the PD (in my view which is 3rd)
Dodge did make a good point though, a lot of our teams were simply unprepared due to pre season, I know we came back 2 weeks earlier, as we had Linfield first.

still wondering what prize money is ,also where is final and why do you think 3rd is as good as you can do .

still wondering what prize money is ,also where is final and why do you think 3rd is as good as you can do .
Prize money allocated as follows:
Winner: 50,000
Runner-up: 30,000
Defeated semi-finalists: 15,000 each
Defeated Quarter Finalists: 10,000 each
Teams defeated in Round 1: 7,500 each
Final probably on in Tallaght (unless Cliftonville overturn a 1-3 scoreline) and yes, I would say 3rd would be the height for our team this season.

wow that money is not to be sneezed at for sure so would wonder why any one would not want this . I would be surprised to see weakened teams out . would final be in tallaght even if shamrock make it?

It would have been great to have it in the Aviva but it won't be there due to the need to preserve the pitch for the Europa League final the following week. Setanta have given teams home advantage in the final before so I wouldn't see them stopping now.
Maybe it will be in Oriel!!!!!!!!!!

Complete out played all over, deserved to loose by more. Davoren found out again. Huge improvement needed for dundalk. Never a red. No courage to play under pressure was the most dissapointing thing from tonight

Have to hand it to Shams, they played us off the pitch. Could easily and probably should have been alot worse.

Ya lucky not to lose by more, as impressive as ive seen Shams play in last couple if years. Every time we had the ball they were in our faces and we were never allowed to settle and play our usual game. They must have got some ripping from their manager for Friday because they were a lot more hungrier than us which is disappointing for us. The fact that we played on Saturday probably didnt help but thats no excuse really for how bad we played. Was a good crowd there too for a Setanta game and a very good travelling support for a Monday nite.

Does anyone know if you can watch the game again on the Setanta website??See nothing on their site except of course how impressive some Geordie was on Merseydide tonight.

5-0 would have been a fairer reflection and only for Clarke it would have been that. Shams were excellent. Keep playing like that and the league will be a stroll in the park for them

I don't think they have that on their site. It's repeated at midnight and tomorrow morning though (and probably later in the week as well).

saw the last mins and gotta say still look like a team who cant score. lots of fancy passes look great but never got near troubling shamrock defence. thanks to great keeping rovers still could pull back with an early goal but that wont happen the way they looked tonight. Shame really cos setanta final would be great .

As the old saying goes: the team that wants it most will win it. Never was it truer tonight, Shams were well up for it, worked thier balls off and got what they deserved. 2 games in 48 hours didnt help us but thats not even half an excuse, we were terrible and could have lost by more. Sending off was harsh and how Alan Kelly refs at international level I dont know.

sending off was harsh, corner turned into goal kick was ridiculus but booking the wrong player was unbeleivable.

It's not an excuse but it definitely contributed. There's no way any team should be playing two competitive games only two days apart.
I thought Kelly had a poor game but he's a top-quality referee. The sending off was harsh but understandable. Sullivan was lucky that he was airborne when contact was made.
You lot will love the Setanta re-broadcast. An early discussion where the co-commentator laughed and said "everybody knows there's only one Rovers, and it's Shamrock Rovers."

Alan Matthews of all people too....
Some debatable decisions from Kelly, like booking Kilduff for McCormack's foul, deflection given as a goal kick and the back pass that the Sligo keeper decided to pick up and we all carried on..

That touched off Kilduff after Foran passed it, Clarke okayed it with the lino before picking it up.

Did the Hoops not play on the Saturday in Sligo and win 1-0 and then on the monday night not have to travel to Lisburn where they won 3-0 ?? Really nice to see the sligo fans being open and honest.. fair play!! How did Ndo do tonight??? will be a really important player this season

It will be our 9th time to play Sligo since March last year.
Don't forget, we were without Twigg last night. Sligo aren't going to win 3-0 in Tallaght. Tie is over.
As we know the finalists, next question is where is the final this year?
Nah Nah Nah Nah
12/04/2011, 7:26 AM
Ndo was poor. They were all poor I would have said apart from Clarke. Cook was interviewed after the game and said it was the worst performance since he came to the club.
I thought I read somewhere before that the final would be in Tallaght if 2 teams from the south got to it

We havent played that badly in years, utterly woefull and deserved absolutely nothing, in fact we were lucky to lose only by 2, could easily have been 4 or 5.
Often we do be on here whinging when shams scab a 1-0 win and Mc Manus is out of this world, well this couldnt be any more different.
Shams actually played football tonight, they fought and scrapped for everything and created numerous chances, I think at one stage Clarke saved 3 1 on 1's in a row.
It was an embaressing performance for us, totally outclassed, like I said it has been years since ive seen us play as badly as last night.
We struggled to string any passes togethor, we never created any clear cut chances, we couldnt hold any possession, ashamed by that performance.
As with regaurds Kelly, usually I find Kelly half decent in comparison to the likes of Buttimer and Winters, but last night he was as bad as us.
I saw the red card clearly, never a red card and some very ropey decisions elsewhere.
But that and the fatigue arguement does not for a second excuse how so so bad we were.

I've seen Sligo twice this year, and while they play some cracking stuff, they are woeful up front for a team of their quality, and I would be stunned if they advance at this stage. They really need a couple of strikers as, from what I've seen, Cretaro and Blinkhorn are just not providing the goods. Maybe when Ndo has a few games under his belt it will make a difference, but they have to get in a striker in the July transfer window - and Foran and Peers to be their regular central-defensive pairing - if they want to challenge for the title imo

Funnily enough McGuinness was missed last night. Foran didn't have one of his better games and I'd say that McGuinness will be first choice with Peers for a while now.
An Amond type goal poacher in July wouldn't go amiss

Still alot of football to be played in the tie. Sligo more than capable of winning 2-0 in Tallaght

That was more like the Shams I've grown to hate over the years. Tons of football and a real attitude. Our lads forgot that you have to earn the right to play your football and Shams were never going to give us that right on a plate. No more than what happened Rory at the Masters, we hope that this will not have long term psychological effects but it was nice to see Michael O'Neill letting them loose for a change and Finn's goal was a cracker. Second goal has to be the subject of an autopsy conducted by coroner Cook.
I can't see us turning this around. We have never come close to that type of result before and I don't see it happening next week.
Definitely missed McGuinness. You can be the best ball player in the world but you need a bit of strength to play centre half and Foran was far too easily pushed off the ball for my liking.
Would agree as well that our lack of a natural striker is costing us big time. I'd like McGoldrick to get more of a chance in Setanta cup games.
Not all doom and gloom. I honestly don't think that we are as bad as we played last night. Shams were top notch, no doubt about it.

Id say he's been waiting a while to get that one in. Got the sack after the game against us last season when we hammered them 6 nil. The Rovers thing is good banter between fans, especially after a game in a bar or that, would have expected a little bit more professional from Matthews tbh. I'll be losing loads of sleep over this obviously.

but the better team by a mile won the match fair and square.
