Murphy played much better than I thought he was capable of . If he can produce that kind of display regularly then he is well worth this place in the squad and if the opposition/tactics suggest it , in the team.

Kevin Doyle: I’m still up for Ireland call (http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/kevin-doyle-im-still-up-for-ireland-call-413620.html)

Kevin Doyle (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Kevin%20Doyle&article=true) appears unlikely to travel from the United States to join up with the squad. The striker has been struggling for a week or so with an ankle injury and appears not to have had any word by Sunday afternoon as to whether he should make the journey or not.

Looks like we are down to Long, Walters and Murphy.

One who seems to be perenially wrapped in cotton wool, and one who hasn't played any league football since he scored in Serbia.

I'd expect Gary Rogers to get another token call up before anything is done about it though.

A brace for Doyle last night in a 2-1 win as Colorado went top of the Western Conference (http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/10/13/colorado-rapids-2-san-jose-earthquakes-1-2016-mls-match-recap). The first is a brilliant diving header, the second a very dodgy looking penalty.

His goals are on 0:30 and 2:50.

I always feel a bit guilty about Doyle. He picked up a long term injury playing for Ireland and was never the same afterwards. Gibson was another in similar circumstances but I somehow don't feel as bad for him.

Didn't Gibson just fall down injured (like Keith O'Neill),
whereas Doyle got injured in the thick of the battle?

Colorado win... Keane never even got to take one.

Colbert Report
06/11/2016, 9:05 PM
I think Keane was lined up to take the fifth penalty. Doyle, as you say, very lucky to score his, terrible penalty. He's on to the next round against Seattle now, Keane and Gerrard are very likely done in LA.

DeLorean
06/11/2016, 9:23 PM
I assume so, always a risky tactic. Seattle aren't quite there yet but lead 3-0 from the first leg. Are these quarter finals so?

Colbert Report
07/11/2016, 12:23 AM
Yes, they are. Montreal will play Toronto in one semi and Colorado will play Seattle in the other. The semis are over two legs and the final is a one match play off held at the stadium of the team with more regular season points.

Too many washed up has-beens in the MLS these days looking for a final pay packet before retirement. Pirlo, Lampard, Keane, Gerrard, Villa, Drogba, etc. None of them are good enough to have a place in the starting lineups anymore.

Toronto FC for years pursued players like this and went nowhere. They finally said forget it and began targeting guys like Michael Bradley and Giovinco who are both still in their twenties.

Drogba actually threw a hissy fit and refused to report to a match a few weeks ago when he was told he'd be coming off the bench. The manager said fine, we don't need you anyway, you're useless at age 38 and can barely run. Drogba had to swallow his pride and come off the bench for the last fifteen minutes today.

Keane's decline seems to have been pretty much overnight at that level? I just assumed he was being phased back after injury.

Keane has 10 goals in 17 appearances this year though. That's hardly 'washed up' form really?

You're off your head if you think Robbie belongs to your list of washed up has beens who had been looking for a final pay packet before retirement when he signed for the LA Galaxy in 2012.

Colbert Report
07/11/2016, 1:22 PM
No no, I don't mean to say that Robbie was washed up when he signed for them in 2012. He's been one of the, if not the, best player in the league since then. He has suffered a serious loss of form this season, especially since he came back from the Euros. He's just not able to run anymore! Yes, he has had a multitude of injuries, but that can only be expected for a man his age playing against guys that are fifteen years younger.

Giovanni dos Santos is the main man for the Galaxy now. There's a reason that Keane and Gerrard didn't make it into the starting XI for the last few weeks, and I don't think it was injury. Both of them will be allowed to leave.

'Kevin Doyle is earning three times more than a Champions League winner in the MLS': https://www.sportsjoe.ie/football/kevin-doyle-mls-121568

Ireland forward Kevin Doyle is doing quite well for himself. The 33-year-old is into his third season at Colorado Rapids and has scored twice in five outings so far this season.

Doyle is on an even, base salary of $1,000,000 and, depending on bonus payments, could take home an extra €45,000 by season's end.

That figure is almost three times what Ashley Cole is making at LA Galaxy. The England international, who won a Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, is on $350,000 with Galaxy.

Scored Colorado's first, made a decisive pass in the build-up to their second and had an assist on the third: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdBP1-bnpbI - brings his tally for the season to four goals and four assists. While he seems to have slipped behind a couple of others in the pecking order, perhaps he should be given more consideration for the upcoming double-header, as he will be at the height of his season, while our other forwards will be only have a couple of games under their belt (and in the case of Daryl Murphy, is not likely to be playing at all)

Had the chance to see Doyler live for the first time as Colorado came to Toronto - didn't figure much as Toronto FC scored early and controlled the game without putting the Rapids away, only to concede fifteen minutes from the end. Doyle's only really telling contribution came a few minutes before then when he rose high to put a header from a free-kick on target and force a point-blank save from our keeper, Clint Irwin. Apart from that, he just had one looping header from the edge of the box that didn't trouble Irwin and a snatched shot on the run that went well high and wide.

Thanks for some great goals Doyler.
He was playing a stormer in a warm up for Euros (Holland?) when he got a bad injury which kind of ended his hopes of being on the plane to France.
His goal V Slovakia was a screamer.

Class act. Had a better career than he expected which is a testament to his humility but also his ability. I hope he goes onto coach as his personality and work ethic, combined with his obvious technique and willingness, demonstrate his potential in that field.

And beside all of the above, he seems to be an utter gentleman. Not much better a compliment, as if he had nothing else going for him.
