View Full Version : 2021 Season , Arrivals and departures
On the one hand you are saying these players have been tracked since before Magilton came on board, but on the other hand you are suggesting that they aren't Buffalo Bill's signings because Magilton seems heavily involved? How big is Dundalk's scouting department? There is absolutely no way all of these signings are the product of long-term monitoring and scouting; LOI clubs do not have that sort of infrastructure. 99.9% of these deals will arise through approaches from agent networks or various contacts and then signed on the basis of some background research and watching footage.
Perth was waxing lyrical last preseason about a radical new approach to recruitment to cast the net wider and bring in a higher calibre of player to push Dundalk on. What came from that? Colovic (on massive wages), Oduwa, Gatt, Patching et al. None of the signings/targets in this off-season have the pedigree to suggest they are levels above the top level of this league. The full-back looks the most promising, and 13 international caps are not to be sneered at, but he is also coming from the fifth place side in a league ranked below the LOI! On paper it looks questionable as to whether goalkeeper and Norwegian striker will even be up to the LOI at all. These signings smack of wild punts as opposed to some new revolutionary approach to recruitment in the league. Dundalk's recruitment has been absolutely awful the last couple of years, and if I were a Dundalk fan I would be seriously, seriously concerned about the current recruitment process and the profile of player they are bringing in.
Maybe some of them will work out, maybe most of them will, but it seems far more likely to me that replacing tried and trusted league winners with complete unknown quantities will end badly.
My post suggested only the Lativan new guy was a good signing from the new intakes, we have no idea how the new keeper will work out. To be fair these are the only two that I would see as starters. I still think these were tracked by DFC pre xmas, but it would still appear that Magilton 'signed off' on them when he started in early Jan.
Remains to be seen how the others will blend in (and I'm told two more foreign players due to sign), but regardless of how many more come in, I would still think only Jurkovskis and the new keeper will be close to first choice.
I will agree Perth got it wrong with a lot from last season, Patching was top of the pile on that, Gatt not far behind, and no argument on Odawu.
I still think the club are right to look outside the league, on keepers I can only think of the Sligo GK McGinty as one they could have gone for, but he signed a new contract last month.
A lot of former league winners have indeed left, but fact still remains on those who have departed, only Gannon would have been a nailed on starter (in my book).

Desmond and Benson signed back. We're a keeper away from having a starting XI at this rate.

Massey is a decent signing for Drogs and all at Dundalk are very sorry to see a player who was vital to everything we done over the last 7/8 leave, and every best wish from all at Dundalk goes with him.
Drogs and Tim obv taking a chance on a player carrying a serious deep quad injury.Dane has bounced back from serious injury before and i'm sure he will again and i wish him all the best on his recovery from this one.

Here's why Perth's sacking was justified. I'm not naive enough to believe that these foreign based players are Magilton signings. The GK may end up being a number 3 gk but i think we'll start to see more of his influence and(Magilton) targets getting signed in the next weeks.

Colovic, Oduwa and Gatt were not bad players, certainly capable at LoI level, value for money? not in the end! The issue ran deeper and the tried and tested decorated players were every bit as ineffectual as the newer signings. Maybe the driven attitude of the squad was diluted but there was a whole lot more going on that we might hear about in due course. Maybe players were forced on Perth and it ended up effecting everything, all the players seemed disinterested though and then took to FG very quickly and started to improve performances irrespective of changes to formation and a lot of player rotation. I dont think there is a Dundalk fan that is doing much more than hoping that the transfer policy has substance and is not scatter gun and hope for for a couple of hits, only time will tell as it possible that homework has been done albeit with a global pandemic on the go it couldnt be direct scouting. I think going forward you will see more structure to a lot of aspects of the club including transfer policy - I hope. It does seem that there is money there if targets become available and that Colovic's contract was authorised in the first place would suggest that.

Some LOI account on Twitter talking about Towell coming back to the League. Between Rovers and Dundalk. Could be rubbish but stranger things have happened.

Apparently Towell just posted a photo of Oriel Park with the caption 'It's been a while' on some social media.

Not that it really negates your point, but even a youth coach probably occasionally watches some international football.
Then again, maybe this is the managerial equivalent of, "I've dreamed of playing for this club since I was a boy".

Where are all these WORK PERMITS coming from?
Dundalk have only signed one player so far who’ll require a work permit, the Faroe’s defender. Of the rest, the keeper was born in Italy, the striker signed from KI is Norwegian and then the Latvian full back. These are all either from the EU or EEA so no work permit needed.

I think the Faroes are treated as outside the EU when it comes to free movement of people.

I don't know, but while searching whether Faroese folks are EU citizens I found this and chuckled. The Brits were unceremoniously fecked out of FI on Jan 1st.

Another wild punt of a signing for Dundalk. Very similar profile to the keeper and the Norwegian striker insofar as he is tall as **** and has bounced around failing at levels below Dundalk for his entire career. These fellas must think they've won the lotto.

Billy King signed back with us. Think most of us will be happy with that, couple of niggly injuries stopped him from getting going properly (along with the stop-start nature of the season) but he showed enough to suggest he could be very good in this league.
Lot of talk of us getting Hery too which would be a bit of a statement. Wouldn't mind a keeper turning up at some stage though personally...

It'd be a teensy bit of a stretch to equate watching a Faroes game with actively following a player for a while. Maybe he came up in scouting for the KÍ game. But sure I guess we'll see.

Somewhat off topic but it would appear that Faroese can't avail of freedom of movement within the EU if wiki is to believed - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands_and_the_European_Union

I seem to remember a lot of questions about EU status being asked in London Airport, and a consequent large amount of alcohol being brought into the country back in 2005 when we played there in the WC qualifiers :)

Is there much expectation for CCFC for next season EP, or is it really about keeping the powder dry for a while? It's a division that has really been competitive recently and should be lauded for that. When Dundalk were languishing in the 1st there were mainly just a couple of sides who would realistically be on for promotion and it made it all the more frustrating at the time. I think its a 'steady as he goes' for Cork with hope, as opposed to Galway, Athlone and others who are looking to make a real push on promotion.

The takeover is still sort of up in the air, so its hard to have any expectations, or know what is expected. I don't think we will be winning the division with the current team.

Indeed Gareth never got much credit or respect for the job he done, but any absence was always noticed and often coincided with a bad run of form

Seems he's shafted Pats last minute! They agreed terms and were ready to unveil him, but Bohs swooped in and he's going there instead. Consolation for Pats is it seems they're getting Mattie Smith who was terrific with Waterford last year.

Hery officially unveiled at Bohs....
A good side Bohs already with the stability and additions would have to place them firmly in the closest to Rovers spot at the minute.
Still think Bohs need better striker options to maintain second spot, G Kelly has a big year ahead of him, didn't over impress at Pats.
Hery is a good signing for Bohs though.

I think it says a lot about Hery that Linfield we’re happy enough to let him leave now even though his contract wasn’t up until the summer. No doubt he’s a good player but he has played in mediocre to poor teams here before so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes in a better team but he didn’t impress against us when we played Linfield last year. The comparison to Ndo is certainly stretching credibility.

Obviously Long wouldn't have signed Heary if he didn't see him fitting into the team but i cant see it , Bohs to their credit are a hard working team which doesn't accommodate a luxury player which is how i see Heary. at my age i shouldnt be wishing time away but i cant wait for the season to start

Seen Bohs fans on twitter also comparing Héry to Ndo, gave me a good laugh.
Not too pushed on him, glad we didn't sign him given his likely high wage. Never really impressed me all that much. Clearly has talent but too temperamental and goes out of games when up against top players.
Think Pats have dodged a bullet given his wages and probably got a player on an upward curve in Smith.

Decent signing for boez and should help them to improve their workmanlike midfield. Also think Kelly could be a good signing - can't really judge him on on his time at pats as it's a graveyard of ambition in inchicore.
Next season appears to be shaping up nicely for last year's top 3- just hope it gets off the ground now.
