Karl Moore and Garry Breen both played as Man City's U-18's triumphed 3-2 over Newcastle's U-18's in the FA Youth Cup. Breen had a shot stopped on the line and Moore had a goal bound shot pushed wide by the keeper. Moore's been impressing of late and was called into the reserve side a few weeks ago.

Not a lot to be honest, it's tough to find any information about Academy players - and rightly so in my opinion, let them get on with the business of learning their trade. Even the main Man City site has nothing listed about him.
He's a winger, and the current FAI U-16 player of the year. Erm, that's about it I'm afraid, I use this blog - http://mcfcreserves-academy.blogspot.com/ - for match reviews but he's only listed as a sub in one game. The youth cup is U-17 AFAIK so he may only be still coming though.

milwall v leicester 0-1

McCarthy played and captained the side, leicester conceded 4 in 2 while he was suspended recently, taking 3 points in the process, since he has come back the side has conceded 1 in 2 taking 6 points as the season turnaround continues.

Maybury again played in right-midfield.
Logan lost his place on the bench to the fit-again Douglas, despite a clean sheet in the midweek reserve win over fulham

For millwall, Dunne played with Doyle on the bench

I've seen questions raised about where leadership is going to come from, and in particular questions about the ability and commitment of Dunne.

Richard Dunne had an outstanding game tonight, epitomised great leadership and ability.

Frankly it's a few years since I've seen the character, at centre back, which Dunne displays, almost back to Moran and Co.

This added recently to Man City's site:

CONGRATULATIONS DONAL

At this stage of the year, the Football Association of Ireland hold their annual Awards ceremony in Dublin. The format is very similar to the PFA awards in England when various awards are presented for outstanding achievement in different age groups. I am delighted to inform you that our young player, Donal McDermott, secured the prize in the U16 category. Donal joined us from our nursery club in Dublin, Cherry Orchard and has put together a string of excellent performances both with us and of course for his country. Unfortunately, Donal suffered a broken ankle in December which obviously set him back a little, but I am pleased to report that all is well now and Donal is back doing what he does best – playing football.
I had heard before there was an arrangement with Cherry Orchard, guess this proves it

Alan Mahon and David Connolly lined out for Wigan's reserves on Monday night against a Liverpool reserve side, but ended up losing 2-0 despite Connolly's best efforts, including a brilliant effort in the 77th minute.
Liverpool also had Daniel O'Donnell in their line up. His profile says he was born in Liverpool, anyone know if he's eligible for Ireland?

dunno tets, but early impressions of the stan era would suggest no stone will be left unturned in these type scenarios.

without wishing to generalise, the scousers ive met do tend to have a soft spot for the emerald isle, but we have been emigrating there since god knows when so he may not even come close to qualifying for us.........the club speak well of him in the profile anyway, could be a nice recriut.

Here is my answer - got it from the young irish players to watch thread

True, he is a good prospect and was immeasurably better at left back against the Swiss under 21s in Tolka than Sheahan was against the French in Cork. But last night.......Mary Mother of Jesus ya had to feel sorry for him. Gerrard ate him alive. I haven't seen a full back given such a roasting all season (although Melchiot was giving him a run for his money on the other flank). The poor lad will never have such a difficult game again and I'm sure it was a one-off in extremely testing circumstances, but I just hope his confidence doesn't take a battering. You just had to feel really sorry for him.

Yep, that's the same guy. I can't find where he was born, but several sites list his nationality as Irish

Karl Bermingham and Willo Flood lined out for Man City's reserves in a 1-1 draw with Leeds' second string. According to the Man City review Bermingham played well up front, but the Leeds review doesn't mention him at all. There's a bit of a striker crisis at City at the moment with both Samaras and Cole out for the majority of the remainder of the season, so I expect Bermingham to be given a regular start up front for the reserves after being tried out at several other positions, including right full! With any luck a substitute appearance might not be out of the question.

heres Kevin Doyle on readings potentially promotion clinching game at leicester on sat, from the blue army site

Royals wary of party-poopers

Striker Kevin Doyle has urged his Reading teammates not to take promotion for granted when they take on Leicester City tomorrow.

A win for the runaway Championship leaders at the Walkers Stadium will seal Premiership football for the Royals.

And, depending on results elsewhere, Steve Coppell's men could even secure the Championship title tomorrow.

But Republic of Ireland international Doyle has warned that victory against a City side rejuvenated under Rob Kelly will not be easy.

“Since their new manager has taken over they've been on a good run of form,” said Doyle, who is the Championship's fourth-top scorer with 14 goals.

“We had a tough game at home against them over Christmas and we know it won't be easy.

“We won that game 2-0 but only with two second-half goals.

“This will not be an easy game to try and get promoted in,” he told his club's website.

It is a message echoed by his boss Coppell.

Despite it becoming increasingly clear in recent weeks and months that Reading will be playing top-flight football next season, Coppell has refused to publicly admit as much.

The experience of last season, when Reading fell away badly after Christmas, has prompted him to keep his counsel.

And even now Reading are on the cusp of promotion, Coppell is playing a straight bat.

“Inevitably, between now and Saturday, I'm sure everyone will be talking about the consequences of this game,” he said. “I hope that will not take our eyes off what we've been about and get distracted.

“Under the new manager, City have been getting good results. He obviously has the respect of the players and has given them a real uplift in points accumulation.

“I'm sure it will be a very difficult game and just because of the importance of the result it doesn't mean we're guaranteed to get it.”

City are expecting their biggest attendance of the season for the visit of the champions-elect.

Reading are certain to receive a noisy backing after selling out their allocation of 3,000 tickets, and there is hope the gate will exceed 26,000 for the first time this campaign.

And while Doyle is excited about the prospect of tying up promotion to the Premiership, the 22-year-old admits to a little disappointment that it might not be achieved in front of their home support.

“I think the mood among the players is the same as for the fans,” he said.

“We're really looking forward to it.

“I must admit I only saw on Monday that a win would guarantee it for us, like a lot of people I thought one of the other teams had to lose.

“It's a little bit of a pity that the first game we can do it is away from home.

“It would be nicer to do it at our place but we won't argue too much.”

leicester v reading 1-1

McCarthy and Maybury played the 90 for leicester the latter again in midfield and playing well, McCarthy was again captain and had a good game with 2 first half blocks on Doyle efforts from the edge of the area.he also managed a superb lastditch tackle to deprive Doyle of a one-on-one.he also headed over from a corner at the backpost.he has managed 3 games without a booking now and was busy throughout winning countless headers. the equaliser was again conceded from a flicked on corner though which has happened the leicester defence as a whole, way too often this season.

for reading, Doyle was involved throughout, with very productive use of posession,he and McCarthy had a real ding-dong of an afternoon and there were some verbals between them in the second half but a handshake at the end.despite being constantly involved, he only had one clearcut sight of goal in the entire game but he took the chance, a header, to confirm readings promotion.he was running around after the game wrapped in a tri-colour as the reading fans stayed put to celebrate with their team.

Long and Hunt also saw action with Hunt having an immediate impact with reading equalising shortly after he came on and he also drew a fine save with a powerfull dipping volley.

Billy Clarke has joined Colchester on Loan from Ipswich.

Parkinson hails new boy Clarke

The 18-year-old, Ipswich loanee almost made a dream debut on Saturday, but saw a last-minute goal disallowed in the goalless draw with S****horpe.

Colchester boss Parkinson said: "I was pleased with Billy - he's only a kid, but not many teams are letting goalscorers go out on loan at this stage of the season."

Parkinson also insisted the decision to chalk off the late strike was wrong.

"When you watch the footage of the incident, I think the goal should have stood," he added.

28/03/2006, 9:28 AM
After the match Mark Hughes said that Reid has the potential to be another Vieira, Keane or Gerrard. I think Reid already has many of Gerrard's attributes - an atheltic physique, good running ability & great ball striking. For a guy who strikes a ball so well he gets far too few goals. I think this will be self-perpetuating in Reid's case though. He's very much a confidence player. The more he gets, the more confident he'll be and so on.

Alan O'Brien turned out for Newcastle's reserves against an Aston Villa reserve side featuring Stephen O'Halloran. The Villains were too strong for the Magpies and were 2-0 up in the first seven minutes with the game finishing 3-0. From the Newcastle report, it seems O'Brien was involved in anything decent on their part, while O'Halloran seemed to be their principle frustrator. The Villa report only mentions O'Brien taking advantage of a mistake to get a shot in on target.

norwich v leicester 2-1

Maybury played the 90, and again in his new role on the right side of midfield. McCarthy captained the side again, but on the sky highlights i saw him appealing for offside for the norwich opener when he was the last man, but to no avail. he was also booked again, when, near the end norwich were awarded a controversial pen and his protests earned him a yellow and another 2 games out. as leicesters next game is this friday and the ban commences 7 days from sat, he will be available for the next game but will then miss the next 2.

Alan Sheehan is nearing full fitness after nearly 2 months out with a groin injury.

Gary Docherty played for norwich and from what i can make out he played upfront, he is reported as having missed a very presentable chance to put his side ahead early on.

i went to see the peterboro v northampton game at london road on sat as leicester and the local non-league side were away. Peter Gain played in the middle for boro and was taking some stick by the end for not getting stuck in enough, which i would agree with as he was absent for large parts of the game, and although looked to play neat pretty football when he was involved,he tended to drift in and out of the game.

Sean St Ledger, who i think trained recently with our u21's, had a poor 90 at centrehalf, early-on opposing players walked through his challenges far too easily on the ground, and in the air he couldnt deal with Jason Lee (pineapple head), he was then caught in posession in his own third and this cost his side the only goal of the game, he was nearly caught similarly again on at least 2 more occasions, but to be fair he did pick up a bit in the 2nd half and any football played at the back by boro did originate with him, but he was lucky not to cost his side another one with a fresh air swipe attempt at a clearance late on. he must be better than he showed on sat to have kept his place through most of the campaign, so maybe it was just an offday for him

for northampton, Ryan Gilligan, who was recently put on standby for our u19's, came on late on upfront and did what was asked, moving tired c.b.'s around with some good runs and winning a couple of pressure relieving free kicks

The Times awarded John O'Shea 8/10 for his performance at Bolton. In fairness to O'Shea, his presence in central midfield has co-incided with MUFC's recent good form. Credit where it's due.
I will be really pleased for him if this good run of form results in him putting in a decent performance for us in the next game in centre midfield. If he doesn't produce for us in the CM position against Chile and Holland he should definitely not play against Germany regardless of how well he is playing for MU.

Playing well at CM for MU does not entitle him to start at LB for us. Steve Staunton has enough experience to know the value and importance of playing a regular FB in a key game and not a makeshift (which is what JOS is) in that position unless he has no other choice.

Willo Flood was back in the starting line up for reserves for Man City, while Karl Moore was an unused substitute as they faced their rivals from across the city with Darron Gibson lining out for the men in red. But it was Flood who was left red faced (can't believe I wrote that!) after a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of United, with Gibson setting up the third.
I honestly can't say what this means for Willo, he came off the bench late against Boro and set up one of City's best chances in the time he had. I'd imagine he'll be involved in some capacity against Spurs at the weekend, probably as a sub, but long term I do fear for his future at the City of Manchester Stadium. To lose someone of his undoubted talent to the lower leagues would be a travesty along the lines of McCarthy, Whelan, Elliott, etc all leaving without ever making any significant mark on the senior side.

Jim O'Brien and Darren O'Dea started for Celtic's reserves while Diarmuid O'Carroll surprisingly remained on the bench as an inexperienced and youthful side beat their Hearts opposite numbers 4-2 to move closer to the reserve title at the Excelsior stadium in Airdrie. O'Brien scored twice (one a penalty) in what was a pretty comprehensive win for the Bhoys, with Hearts having 2 players sent off.

No Hearts review up yet, I'll post it when it is published
