Stack, Hunt, Long & Doyle all played for Reading last night in their 3-2 win over WBA, Doyle replacing Long after 90 mins.

I only saw about 30 mins of the Leeds game. Kav was his usual composed self, distributing the ball well and not afraid to receive the ball under pressure. Miller had some good moments. Didn't notice Douglas much but thought Kelly played well, and I hear he scored a great goal.

Anyone who saw the whole match got a comment on the Irish in this game?

Never heard if he scored a penalty, but I saw the goal and he did play a part in it. Has only played 2 reserve team matches for stoke and is only 17 so he must be highly thought of over there to get a run in teh first team so quickly

i had half an eye on it stuttgart, i thought they all did fine but like you say Kav would have been the pick of them, but i thought Miller looked much more confident and hungry for the ball than in his spell in red, good to see.

the leicester report is claiming the score doesnt reflect the ammount of say leicester had in this one and Sheehan gets several good mentions for his crossing and shooting on the night.

Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy is hopeful that Stephen Elliott will play again this season despite the player being out for two months with a back injury.

McCarthy insists he will not rule Elliott out as should he becomes pain-free, he could then be match-fit within a couple of weeks.

However, McCarthy says there's no need to rush him back into the action as it could affect his long-term future.

"I'm not going to say Stephen won't play again this season," McCarthy told the Mirror.

"If he becomes pain-free in the next couple of weeks, he will be only a further couple of weeks getting fit because he's a naturally-fit young fella and we will see him back playing.

"But there's no point, for his long-term future, in trying to rush him back.

"As soon as he is fit, he will be busting a gut to play. Hopefully he isn't too far away.

"He has a problem with his spine and he had an injection that didn't work, but after three weeks that can be revisited.

Reading and Ireland u19 international Shane Long is hoping to be picked for a Football League under-21s side which is set to play similar opposition from Italy at Hull City's KC Stadium on Tuesday, February 21.

18 year old Long has featured in several of Reading's outings during the last six weeks and is delighted to have been given the chance to impress the manager and fans.

" I've got a few games under my belt now, I just hope to make the most of every chance I get."

"It's definitely a big boost, coming over here and not knowing where I'd be and I'm delighted really."

When questioned about his chances of continuing his run in the first team Long said

"We'll take it one step at a time, however if it comes, i'll jump at the chance"

Asked about the fact that Kevin Doyle was playing for reading and that they had both came over from Ireland together, he said

"Oh it's brilliant, it's someone to look up to, just to learn a few things from, he's brilliant at what he does and it's an aim for me to get to his standard."

Young Irishman, Adam Rooney was thrown into the mix during Stoke City's F.A cup 3rd round replay against Tamworth. Stoke city boss, Johan Boskamp sent on Adam Rooney, a red-headed, 17-year-old Irish attacker, and with his first touch in senior football, a header from Peter Kopteff's corner, he set up Gallagher to redeem himself with an overhead kick.

Boskamp said "I like him because he always goes for goal if he has the chance and doesn't let his head drop if he misses."

Rooney has been nominated for the FAI schools player of the year award and will be home for the awards at the citywest hotel in Dublin next Sunday night.

Hearts have offered Liverpool & Ireland u21 international, Darren Potter an astonishing £10,000 a week to become the joint highest-paid player in Tynecastle history.

Negotiations between the player's representatives and Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov took place in December, when a deal was put in place to take Potter and 18-year-old Francis Smith from Anfield to Edinburgh.

Potter's fractured vertebra, which is expected to sideline him until the end of January, has delayed completion of the transfer as Hearts are understood to be waiting to assess the injury when it is nearer to healing.

However, the player is said to be delighted with the terms offered to him, which are equal to the reported wage of Hearts' Lithuanian striker Edgaras Jankauskas, and is eager to get his career in Scotland underway.

Alan O'Brien has come off the bench in Newastle's last 3 games and I wouldn't be suprised to see him starting this weekend. Souness gave Duff his chance and O'Brien is a similar player to Duff. Here's a few comments from Newcastle fans:

Maybury started but was hauled off after an hour, the home crowd celebrated his being subbed with a huge cheer, not good for him.he just doesnt seem motivated and the player who only arrived in the jan window last season but was still 2nd in the player of the season vote last season is out of form at the moment, poor distribution and out of position for the opener. he was linked with sunderland in pre season but and it was reported he wanted to go but the club wouldnt have it and his determimation and tenacity which made him a favourite seem to have gradually faded, in his defence he is being played out of position at l.b. so we'll know better when he is back at r.b. One thing is for sure, his place as vice captain has been taken by McCarthy who despite letting his man get accross him for the opener, had another decent 90 and is becoming one of the few redeeming qualities of this manangers tenure, again as stand in captain on sat he gave his all and when the home end were booing the side off at full-time they even stopped briefly to applaud McCarthy as he came to salute them.

Republic of Ireland Under 18 Manager Sean McCaffrey has announced an experimental squad for a double friendly in Malta on 6th and 8th February next.

On announcing the squad Manager McCaffrey said, "this is quite an experimental squad I have named for this tournament. Established players such as Anthony Stokes, Stephen Henderson, Eddie Nolan, Simon Madden and Stephen Gleeson have been omitted so that I have a chance to see other players perform. This is the start of my preparation for next year's Under 19 fixtures," he added.


The Under 18's will also play a double friendly against Hungary in April.

Maybury played at l.w.b. and McCarthy at c.b., the game was won by a free-kick wonder goal, the kick wasnt conceded by either of our 2, of whom McCarthy had the better game by the sound of it.Maybury was subbed as leicester chased it.

ita all going the way of the pear big time Stutt, thats whats happening, all kind of rumours about about bust ups between Levien and key players, the most recent being Dublin who was deemed unworthy of a place in the 16 last night, but yet O'Grady was on the bench, a youngster who was deemed not good enough and put up for sale and loaned out a few months back, also leicester had a 19 yr old up front in Fryatt who has just arrived from walsall and a 17 yr old in midfield on his FIRST full start.........maddness if you ask me,when i think in the mess the team is in a bit of experience on the pitch could be vital.

also rumours about the managers personal life and the fact that his family havent moved to the area,...etc etc....hard to know what the full story is but something stinks

Michael Gardyne scored one and made another as the reserves stepped up
their
bid for a fifth successive title with a battling 2-0 win over Falkirk.

The victory, which also saw Rocco Quinn continue his fine start to 2006
with
a third goal in two games, takes Kenny McDowall's team to within a goal
of
league leaders Aberdeen, but it was far from easy going against a
disciplined and determined Bairns outfit.

The last time these sides met, Celtic produced arguably their worst
performances of the season to lose 1-0 at the Falkirk Stadium and,
though
their second-half showing this afternoon eventually secured its just
reward,
John Hughes' well-drilled side again proved worthy opponents.

It was Falkirk, certainly, who enjoyed the best of some scrappy early
exchanges, with Mark Twaddle registering the first effort of note in 10
minutes with a driven long-range free-kick that had David Marshall
scrambling across his goal-line to see it wide.

Marshall, in truth, numbered among McDowall's more assured performers,
but
even he enjoyed good fortune as the visitors pressed for an opener.

Pedro Moutinho had raced through on goal, leaving Darren O'Dea trailing
in
his wake, and Marshall, who'd advanced to narrow the angle, was left
stranded by a delightful chip from the impressive Poruguese that,
fortunately for Celtic, dropped just wide of the left-hand post.

At the other end, meanwhile, and with McDowall's side unusually
toothless in
attack, it took until nine minutes before the break for Matt Glennon to
be
tested.

Quinn, twice on target in the reserves' previous fixtures, turned
sharply on
the edge of the box and, with his weaker foot, fired in a powerful shot
that
was heading for the far corner before Glennon - proving that the
inactivity
hadn't dulled his reflexes - leapt across goal to produce a superb
one-handed tip-away.

Celtic, though, could hardly have claimed to be deserving of a goal at
this
stage and it was doubtless with some choice words from their manager
still
ringing in their ears that the Hoops players emerged for the second
half.

Whatever McDowall said, it certainly appeared to have the desired effect

because Falkirk, comfortably the better side in the opening period, were

soon to be found pinned back in their own half as Celtic began, at long
last, to apply some pressure.

Jim O'Brien's introduction gave the frontline a welcome injection of
pace,
but with the Bairns remaining resolute and well-organised at the back,
it
required something extra-special from the team's maverick to break the
deadlock.

Danger had appeared minimal when Ryan Conroy's inswinging corner was
half-cleared to the left-hand edge of the box, but picking up the scraps
was
Gardyne, who, spying the spectacular, dug out a superb right-foot shot
that
curled into the far corner off the underside of the crossbar.

It was a brilliant goal and, rather than work on the assumption that it
would prove sufficient, Celtic set about doubling their lead, with
O'Brien
in particular a constant thorn in the visitors' side.

Twice, he went tantalisingly close, first with six minutes remaining
when,
having cut in from the left, he sent a right-foot rocket screaming just
wide
of the far post and then, two minutes later, when he worked a neat
one-two
with Rocco Quinn and forced a magnificent save out of Glennon from 20
yards.

Yet, as it transpired, it was to be O'Brien's strike partner who sealed
the
points, and with another magnificently executed goal.

Gardyne was the provider this time with an intelligent through ball and,

though Glennon raced quickly from his line, Quinn was nimble and brave
enough to get in first and dink a superb chip just under the crossbar
and
into the gaping net.

Saints sign Potter on loan

Southampton have signed Liverpool midfielder Darren Potter on loan until the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international made his comeback from a recent injury for the Reds' reserves in midweek.

Potter, 21, last played for Rafael Benitez's first team in their Carling Cup defeat by Crystal Palace back in October, having since slipped further down the pecking order at Anfield.
