This is what Sean MCCaffrey said last year (from elevenaside.com)

Republic of Ireland underage manager Sean McCaffrey has backed Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Darren Randolph to reach the summit of professional football after the 17-year-old’s latest top-drawer display.

Randolph, who has also been tipped as a future basketball star and is the son of Killester star Ed, is the undisputed number one in the current Irish under-19 set-up which is currently in Italy preparing for May’s second phase of qualifiers for this summer’s Uefa finals.

The Addicks shotstoppper made two top-class saves in Tuesday’s first game against the Italians to help McCaffrey’s under-19s to a scoreless draw in Corato.

And although UCD’s Darren Quigley is expected to get his chance in the second and final game in Bisceglie this afternoon (Thursday), McCaffrey has left observers in no doubt that Randolph is his number one.

He told the Irish Sun: “I’ve never seen anyone as good in my time in youth football. He’s confident, has great technique and takes the ball in so many different positions. He’s brave, intelligent and a good kicker. He’s a fantastic prospect. Plus he’s also a good lad and very easy to work with.”

Diarmuid O'Carroll played and scored for a Celtic reserve side including Darren O'Dea and Michael McGovern against Motherwell's reserves. Jim O'Brien (did he recently declare for Ireland?) came on as a sub
Final Score: 2-0

Some comments from http://celticfcblog.blogspot.com

Michael McGovern: Had next to nothing to do, which was great credit to the degenders in front of him. Handled a few crosses well but was lucky to see a headed clearance volleyed over by McBride. Could perhaps do better with his kick-outs, as the ones that weren't sclaffed unerringly found McDonald's head. But that's a petty quibble. Mick did well to keep himself awake.
Darren O'Dea: Showed great maturity in the middle of the back three, immediately realising that this was no surface for attempting any Franz Beckenbauer "playmaking sweeper" impressions. Won every tackle, didn't try any risky passes, and looked very good in the air, even to the extent of occasionally beating the Well centre-half McDonald a few times, despite being about four inches smaller. Looks like a determined defender who reads the game very well.
Diarmuid O'Carroll: For long periods it looked like it was going to be a frustrating day for the powerful Irish striker, who gives 100% commitment, holds the ball up well and packs a mean shot. But he kept battling away and got his reward when he was on hand to nick the first, a good poacher's goal. In the second half he had a very physical battle with the gigantic Well centre-half Steve McDonald, challenging him for every high ball and giving him a very uncomfortable time all in. Still available for the Under-19s but looks to be a real battler. And, at around 6ft tall, he is a great build for a centre forward in the Mark Hughes mould. Reckon we'll be seeing a bit more of the bold Diarmuid!
Jim O'Brien: This is one confident lad! Came on for Agathe after 48 minutes and immediately made himself at home, demanding possession, taking on his man, firing in crosses, step-overs, flicking the ball through his legs and so on. And I bet Craig reid on the right of Celtic's three-man defence was happy to see him. Big Jim powered up and down the flank, but the minute Well broke on the left, he immediately tucked in to the right back slot, allowing Reid to provide cover in the centre for Darren O'Dea. Textbook stuff. This lad has the build, the skill, the match intelligence, the confidence and the application. I expect big things from him over the next 12 months.

Just to let you know, McGovern plays for the north. O'Brien declared for us yeah.

Stutts - Henderson is injured. Just reading a Brighton forum and they rate him highly.

Gary Walsh is from the Republic, right winger. Paul Cahillane is another Irish player at Celtic, he's a left winger and only 16. I asked the fella who runs that blog about him a while ago and got this reply (I asked was he a Damien Duff type winger):

Paul Cahillane is quite a slight lad at present but, being just 16, he has a bit of growing and filling out to do. As yet, he doesn't have the power and pace of Duff but he does have a lovely "dip" of the shoulder to jink past full backs and can put in some lovely crosses.
When I first saw him for the Under-17s last month he was more of an out-and-out dribbler who tended to hold on to the ball too long.
Already there are signs that he is improving.
There's quite a bit to go yet before he could even think about challenging for a first team place but I would imagine he'll be in the running for the Ireland Under-17 squad.
Other Irish that haven't been mentioned are keeper, Paul Skinner, and another 16 year old left winger, Graham Carey.

Cahillane and Carey have played in the U17 teams together on either wing and they seem like the Duff and Robben of that level. Very skillful players willing to take on their men but both seem a bit greedy.

11-a-side says Darren Potter could be on his way to Hearts.
He's out with a back injury for the next 2 months according to today's Indo, so the move won't happen until the summer at least. He picked the injury up in a reserve game a week or 2 ago.

The travelling party was already shorn of Darren Potter, who is out for two months with a back injury, but youngsters David Raven and Danny O'Donnell were left on Merseyside as Benitez sticks with his tried and trusted squad.

heres an interview from the ''bluearmy'' site from today, with the leicester manager, about Paddy McCarthys suspension and tipping Alan Sheehan for a start at the weekend

Plug that gap!

by Bill Anderson

Leicester City will again try to plug the defensive gap left by the suspended Patrick McCarthy when they face Crewe at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday.

In another back-four reshuffle, Nissa Johansson is set to return in central defence with Alan Maybury reverting to his preferred right-back role and Alan Sheehan on the left.

Boss Craig Levein admits it has been a struggle to make up for the absence of McCarthy - "the best defender at the club" - and revealed his plans for the Crewe match to mark a return to winning ways.

Levein said: "We had been defending well but at Stoke last week it was the worst we had done at the back for a long time.

"McCarthy is, in my opinion, the best defender at the club, but it is his own fault he has been banned and we saw how much he was missed at Stoke.

"We need to do something different for the Crewe game because the rest of the team is all right. Rab Douglas is solid in goal, the midfield and strikers are doing well and I see no reason to change that.

"We have shown we can get goals but we need to stop them again. With Maybury at right-back and Sheehan on the left, they can both attack to support the others because, against Crewe, we should have more possession than we have had in the recent away games."

Johansson and Sheehan both featured in a closed-door friendly against Boston United yesterday and Australian trialist Joel Griffiths did his chances no harm at all by notching the only goal of the game.

McGeady having a great game so far for Celtic. Won SPL young player of the month yesterday.

Ipswich have been rocked by a fresh injury blow that further restricts boss Joe Royle's attacking options for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

Teenage striker Billy Clarke, who made his first senior start in last week's 2-2 home draw with QPR, dislocated his elbow in action for the reserves at Portsmouth on Wednesday.

Republic of Ireland youth international Clarke, who was 18 on Tuesday, joins long-term injury victim Sam Parkin (broken ankle) on the Portman Road casualty list.

Ireland U21 International Kevin Doyle guaranteed the points for Reading at the new Den this afternoon.

Doyle supplied the pass for Reading's opener in the 40th minute when he lifted the ball into the path of Sidwell, who smashed in a right-footed volley that gave 'keeper Colin Doyle no chance.

The Irishman then earned the Royals a penalty in the 43th minute when Craig was shown the red card for bringing down Doyle inside the penalty area, but Kitson saw his kick saved by Colin Doyle before Paul Robinson produced a superb tackle to prevent Reading's top scorer netting the rebound.

The young striker capped an impressive performance when he brushed past a weak challenge from Zak Whitbread and guided the ball into the top-right corner from a difficult angle seven yards from goal.

Reading are now 6 points clear at the top of the championship.

Extract from the Guardian:

"Millwall's second half began with calamity as defender Tony Craig was sent off for a poor challenge on Doyle in the penalty area - their ninth sending-off in the league this season. The resulting penalty, taken by Dave Kitson, was improbably saved by keeper Colin Doyle, on loan from Birmingham and something of a star yesterday afternoon as he worked hard to limit the damage."

leicester v crewe 1-1

Maybury played the whole match and did fine,he had a shot narrowly clear the crossbar in the first half.Sheehan was finally given his turn in the problem left-back position, where 6/7 players have been tried so far this season and he wound up walking for 2 yellow cards for needless fouls commited high up the pitch with his side in no immediate danger.there had been a lot of calls for him being included over here but the manager was reluctant due to his lack of experience, as he has come from academy u17 to first team in about 6 months, and was proved right on this.he also didnt do enough to cut out the cross for crewes opener when his winger forced past him way too easily. but is wasnt all bad by him, his passing was good and accurate and he won a corner from a set piece free-kick he took. it will be interesting to see when he gets his next chance.

Luke Rodgers came on late for crewe, wasnt he linked with us a while back?

O'Carroll and O'Dea started in Celtic reserve's 4-1 win over their Livingstone counterparts. O'Carroll scored the opener. No review on the official site yet.
Some comments from http://celticfcblog.blogspot.com

Du Wei's partner in central defence was the comparatively diminutive Darren O'Dea, a mere smout at 6ft 1in. Yet he hardly lost a header and steamed into some fierce challenges.

The pass ran into the path of O'Carroll, who had made a clever, curving run across the 18-yard line, and big Diarmuid wasted no time in slotting the ball into the corner of the net.

For the longer term, the promise shown by O'Dea, Mulgrew, Lawson, Ferry, McGlinchey and O'Carroll bodes well.

The lad that runs that blog posts on a forum (http://kerrydalestreet.co.uk/index.php?showforum=1) I do. I didn't even mention O'Carroll and O'Dea and he wrote:

"EireBhoy, the two Irish lads, O'Dea and O'Carroll (I am but a fool!) were also first class."

Someone else wrote:

"Darren O'Dea for me was the star man, he wins everything and organised players all over the park."

And the player ratings that have just been put up on the blog:

Darren O'Dea: Won header after header, despite being the smallest player in this giant back four. Yet the Irishman is certainly no midget. The term "no-nonsense" sums him up perfectly. Not too proud to clear his lines, and a fierce tackler. Good shouter, too. Just 18, and a real prospect in central defence or left back. Should be ready to mount a bid for a place in the first team squad next season.

Diarmuid O'Carroll: This Bhoy really did look the part! The big 18-year-old Irish lad is as brave as they come, and took a savage battering at times. But he kept coming back for more; coming deep to show for the ball and hold it up, or spinning away behind the left back to chase Virgo's long passes towards the corner. A defender's nightmare! Took his goal superbly well and was a tremendous "out" ball for the defenders. I particularly liked his loud yells of "Shoiytt!" whenever he lost possession. There are a few strikers in front of him just now, but at some point over the next 12 months this honest lad will get a wee chance. And he has everything needed to make the most of it. The Irish Mark Hughes? Come back in two years and tell me if I was wrong.

I'm just looking through Arsenal's reserve reports. Stokes scored in the FA youth cup last week and was described as "arguably the best perfomer on the night". Arsenal went out on penos. Him and Cregg started in central midfield the previous match. Cregg set up one of the goals. Kelly played in that match too.

Cregg has played more reserve football than any other Arsenal player this season. Why can't he even make the bench for the Carling cup games when Larsson, Song and Muamba are there?

/edit - Forgot to mention that there's a player called James Dunne listed in Arsenal's squad list. What is it with them and Irish names in the underage teams? :)

Colchester could be set to lose the services of on-loan forward Mark Yeates after Norwich were linked with a transfer-window move for the 20-year-old.

Kevin Doyle's 10th goal of the season helped Reading make it 10 wins in a row as the royals march towards the premiership continues.

READINGS IRISH BRIGADE KEEP THE PREMIERSHIP DREAM ON TRACK

Shane Long's late equaliser earned Championship leaders Reading a point as they extended their unbeaten league run to 26 matches against 10-man Derby.

Long, signed from League of Ireland side Cork City in the summer, scored his first goal in English football two minutes from time to cancel out Seth Johnson's 62nd-minute strike for Derby, who had Andrew Davies sent off with 19 minutes remaining.

Johnson had given Phil Brown's side a first-half lead, but Kevin Doyle hit back within two minutes.

Generally a pretty good "feelgood" day for the Irish in Ingerland y'day. Reid scoring a cracker for Blackburn. Robbie captained Spurs. Douglas 2 goals for Leeds, Doyle yet again, Shane Long, Stephen Hunt playing, Shane Supple clean sheet and so on....

Not just on the basis of one goal, but how the **** could Kerr ignore Reid for over year? He made a big impact in his late showing against Switzerland I thought & would be in my first choice midfield, along with Kav, Duff & Andy Reid. Reid has all of Steve Gerrard's physical attributes, a great engine & is an exceptional ball striker. Souness sapped all his confidence dry & Blackburn's style of play is too primitive for him at times. He should score far more goals than he does.

Robbie captained Spurs
By all accounts Robbie put in a star performance. Surely you saw his penalty last week? imo his best so far. Supremely confident, while slightly leaning to his left, stroked a neat side foot to the goalkeepers left. The goalkeeper who subscribed to the 'stuttgart axis theory' went the wrong way.
