Well Robben scored and set up 1. :) I seen the goals and while he passed to Jarosik for the last goal it wasn't an assist. Good to see Duff scoring anyway.

Pre-season friendly, Kettering V Leicester 0-3
Conrad Logan(g.k) and Alan Sheehan(l.b) both played from the start in this one.it was an experimental leicester side, with only 4 having any first team experience and kettering making 11 changes at half time.
Logan has bulked up a lot since last season,he is looking a lot more built.both centre-halves were triallists so it was an unfamiliar defence in front of him but he was a lot more vocal than when ive seen him previously.constantly organising the backfour.he kicked badly on one occasion but got away with it and was beaten to one cross but the header went wide.
Sheehan played well,he only gave it away twice in the whole match and hit half a dozen lovely long left footed passes including 2 diagonal balls over the opposing left-backs head to his teammate.he was also coming across to take the corners and he delivered good quality balls.
To be fair, they werent up against much quality in the game but its still nice to see them playing well.
Alan Sheehan has gone with the first team squad on a pre-season tour of norway, but Logan has not travelled and will do the rest of pre-season with the reserve squad.
EireBhoy:Stephen Grant, and Ryan Mcgavin/Mcgavigan,are no longer at leicester.the club rep didnt know where they moved to.does anyone know where they are now? did mcgavin/mcgavigan go to finn harps?

pre-season friendly,bodo glimt(norway) v leicester city 1-5
Maybury,McCarthy,Sheehan and Connolly all started, meaning 3 of the back four were irish.
McCarthy was replaced at halftime.
Connolly scored twice, one angled drive and one lob over an advancing keeper.
Sheehan gave away a penalty which was missed but it was said to have been a scandalous decision to award it in the first place.
Maybury crossed for one goal.
Leicester signed another centre-half today and are also looking to sign a left-back and a striker before the season kicks-off,so it looks like the lads will have plenty competition for their places.

Carr set up one of Shearers goals in the intertoto cup today:
Shearer:
"If we get balls in the box like that, then I'm confident I will always score goals. They were two great balls, particularly from Stephen, it was the kind of cross you cannot defend, but the type you dream about if you are a centre-forward like me attacking the ball."
Liverpool are playing Olympiakos tonight and again Potter gets a start in a strong lineup:
Carson
Josemi
Hyypia
Medjani
Riise

Hamann

Crouch
Cisse
Subs:

Does anyone know if Liam Miller has figured in any MUFC pre-season game? All I could find was that he played no part in the Hong Kong game, despite Ferguson picking 2 separate sides for each half.

Maybury came on for the last few minutes against Inter for Leicester last night, and McCarthy remained an unused sub, I read somewhere that Levein said 2 other players worked well at centre half, will Paddy still be first choice at the start of the season?
No sign of David Connolly either, still injured?

leicester v inter 1-2
Connolly has a slight groin strain, nothing serious but wasnt risked as it was a friendly. It was the first pre season game where McCarthy hasnt featured and Levein referred to him today as one of the first 11 who hadnt played last night,so hopefully he will start the season in the team.
Maybury came on for Sheehan who had made his home debut last night at left-back and had a decent game,he got booked, and the build up to inters 2nd came down his flank but he didnt disgrace himself at all and played football when it was on,with a few lovely passes, and put his foot through it when he had to.he also blasted a free kick which was charged down.
big gap in quality between the sides, leicester had made a few half-chances but didnt take them, then inter created 3 in 10mins,took 2 of them and then kept the ball for the rest of the evening.

Willo Flood set up 2 goals, and Karl Bermingham scored 1 as Man City reserves beat Stalybridge ****** 4-3. Both Flood and Bermingham were substituted just after an hour, at 4-0 to Man City
Match report - here (http://www.mcfc.co.uk/default.sps?syndicatorguid={7EB24EFC-E397-48B3-977A-BC40E4795300}&rmasiteinstanceguid={5B147D34-2BCF-448D-976C-AE1944ED09F5}&pagegid={DBD12D53-8346-431D-A04F-5D0F8664DE80}&newsid=204510)
This is Steve Wigley's first game in charge of the reserve side, and it was heartening to see Bermingham starting, but I had hoped Flood would be more involved with the senior side. There's 2 games this weekend (Stoke and Sheffield Wednesday) and with any luck one (if not both) will be involved.
Stephen Ireland didn't play at all which leads me to believe he will definately be playing this weekend.

rushden and diamonds v leicester city 2-0
a young leicester side, mostly reserves and academy lads.Logan and Sheehan both played.Sheehan played at centre-half,as the new left back signed from plymouth made his debut.Sheehan had a free kick charged down by the wall.and Logan is credited with a fine save in the 24th min which kept it scoreless at the time.
David Bell is singled out for special mention by the leicester o.s. as having been a thorn in leicesters side throughout the game and it was he who scored r+d's second with a 20yard freekick past Logan.

Saw something on SKY last night that Kenny Cunningham had to have an X-ray on his ribs after a friendly against QPR. Birmingham's website quotes Steve Bruvce as saying that even if they are broken he should be OK for start of season. With Dunne possibly injured for a while (any update on this?) the last thing we need is to lose Cunningham.
Anyway, QPR won 2-1 but neither Henderson nor Rowlands played any part. QPR played two other 'keepers though. Morrison didn't play but he did play an eralier game against Peterborough, scoring Birmingham's goal in a 2-1 defeat. Doyle played in goals for the second half. Presumably this was Colin Doyle.

Just saw this in the UK's The Independent, in an article on Man City:
Yesterday, City drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. Glenn Whelan opened the scoring for Wednesday in the 37th minute.
But City's bright young strikers are giving Pearce a boost ahead of the new season. And the Irishman Karl Bermingham, 19, brought the visitors level in the 61st minute.
EDIT: and the match report is below. No sign of Partridge in the Owls' line-up. Willo Flood played well & Graham Coughlan also played for SWFC.

With the help of Football Manager 2005 I compiled a list of Irish players playing in England. ATM, I've only got through the premiership and championship. I have links to profiles of the lesser known players that actually had an online profiles. I've also got links to match reports of the reserves, youths and 1st team reports for the lower leagues as it would be more difficult to keep track of these matches. If you know of any players not in the list post there details and i'll add them. If a mod feels this warrants a sticky please do. Is Paul McCarthy (http://www.kickinmagazine.ie/pmccarthy1232001.htm) (from The Glen in Cork) still playing for Wycombe Wanderers? He was close to the Irish squad, but Alan Kernaghan edged him out.

There was a Team by Team premiership pullout in yesterdays Herald in which advocates for each club waffled about their respective clubs. One question was about young players to which Mario Melchiot singled out Marcos Painter a great talent and mentioned he was Irish. Anyone heard of him??
Stuttgart88
04/08/2005, 12:12 PM
Painter is a defender I think. A match report on soccercentral.ie a few months ago said he scored against MUFC's reserves which included Paul McShane. I've heard he's good but he's not included in the senior squad on Birmingham's website. I just did a google search and he broke a guy's leg in two places on their recent tour of Norway. No other news though.
Edit: Just found this profile on the FAI website. Let's hope he doesn't do a Leon Best!
Born in England, but with an Irish grandmother, Marcos Painter made his international debut last year in the Oporto Tournament impressing manager Sean McCaffrey enough to keep his place for the European Championship qualifiers. A solid defender, he is highly-rated by Birmingham.

SEAGULLS SWOOP FOR McSHANE
Brighton have completed the signing of Manchester United youngster Paul
McShane on a five-month loan deal.
The 19-year-old centre-back has agreed terms with the Seagulls and will now
link up with his new team-mates ahead of Saturday's Championship clash with
Derby.
Manager Mark McGhee is delighted with his new signing and also hopes to tie up
a deal for Aston Villa goalkeeper Wayne Henderson.
``We're pleased to have Paul joining us. He's exactly the type of player we
want at this time and we think he'll be good for us,'' he told the club's
official website, www.seagulls.co.uk.
``We wanted to bring someone in who was similar to Barry Ashby, who we looked
at last week, but maybe a bit younger. Paul is that type of player. We've had
him watched, and he played well, so we're looking forward to working with
him.''

Marcos Painter has just been given squad no. 31 so he now in the senior squad at Birmingham. Kenny Cunningham is no. 4 and Clinton no. 19. With Pandiani, Heskey and Forrsell all at Birmingham now, what price a loan deal for Clinton before the transfer window closes? Elliott is snapping at his heels at international level, and I've a strong feeling David Connolly will have a great season (no laughing at the back!!) so he's going to need first team football to keep his international starting spot.
