heres an interview with Paddy McCarthy about recent and future goings on at leicester from the blue army site.

We've got to carry on momentum - skipper

By Paul Jones

Skipper Paddy McCarthy knows there is still a long road ahead for his Leicester City side before they can feel secure in the Championship.

An unbeaten run of four games under Rob Kelly and Mike Stowell has seen City climb away from the immediate spectre of the relegation zone.

But, as City face up to promotion-chasing Leeds United tomorrow, McCarthy will be urging his colleagues to maintain that momentum. "There is no way we will be taking our foot off the gas just because of a few good results," he said. "As a team, those results have given us a lot of confidence.

"I don't think we ever doubted our own ability, or the ability we had throughout the squad, but it is amazing the effect a couple of wins can have on you."

McCarthy's partnership with Patrick Kisnorbo at the heart of the defence has been one of the keys to the timely revival.

The Foxes' captain is quick to recognise that.

"Since Patrick stepped in at centre-back, I think he has been our most consistent player," McCarthy said.

"He has great determination and strength and reads the game well.

After playing so much in midfield he is good with the ball and can take an extra touch when he needs to." Alhough City were pegged back and had to settle for a 2-2 draw from Tuesday's cracking encounter with East Midlands rivals Derby County, McCarthy still feels City are continuing to move forward.

"I felt that we had enough chances to win the game," he said.

"Matty Fryatt worked his socks off and Alan Maybury thoroughly deserved his goal.

"It was disappointing to concede the equaliser from a set-piece but we won't get too down-hearted about that.

"To have taken 10 points from the last 12 is a massive boost."

McCarthy hopes that run will continue against Leeds at the Walkers Stadium and he will certainly be looking for a happier ending to his afternoon than the one he suffered at Elland Road when the teams met back in December. The City defender was red-carded for his protests following what proved the decisive strike as Leeds ran out 2-1 winners.

"It was a controversial goal," he recalled.

"We felt hard done by but we won't be going into tomorrow's game thinking about anything other than a win.

"Leeds are right up there in the play-off positions and are a decent team.

"But we have to concentrate on our own game and not worry about what they are going to do

Givens Urges Stokes to move on, loan or permanent....(have to say I agree)
Stokes should seek Arsenal exit – Don

http://www.eleven-a-side.com/acrossthewater/irish_soccer_detail.asp?newsid=21219

February 17, 2006

Republic of Ireland under-21 manager Don Givens has urged teenage prodigy Anthony Stokes to consider a move away from Premiership big guns Arsenal.

Stokes, who will not turn 18 until the summer, has been on duty with the Ireland under-21 side in Madeira this week.

The former Shelbourne starlet has been a threat in both games against Madeira and Finland – hitting the woodwork twice – and will attempt to put Portugal to the sword in Friday’s tournament decider.

Givens has been impressed, but he feels Stokes should fly the Highbury nest in order to maintain his progress.

He told the Irish Daily Star: “It seems to be – from where I’m looking – that he needs to be thinking away from Highbury, on loan or a permanent move.

“He just needs to get out on loan somewhere to a decent team and play a bit. I would have thought he’d be ready for the Championship level.”

leicester v leeds 1-1

Logan was on the bench for leicester having been recalled from his loan.

Maybury again played in midfield and had another fine game, he was given m.o.t.m according to the stadium announcer.once McCarthy had been sent off the leicester midfield 3 were played very narrow and he got through a lot of work, good stuff from him.he finished the game at l.b.

McCarthy got sent off after about 10 mins when he got caught under a long punt upfield and wound up facing his own goal with the striker on his shoulder and a ball dropping out of the air, he let it bounce, tried to take a touch and turn out of trouble but it didnt come off and the ball became 50/50 between them both, the chase carried on into the area and McCarthy tugged the players shirt, the striker went down and a pen was given and McCarthy was given a straight red even though there was a covering leicester defender on the scene, the ref (who had a poor game throughout from both camps point of view) deemed it a goalscoring oppertunity.Paddy was visibly distressed by the outcome and Gary Kelly came over to symphatise with him as he made his way off the field. Ive been critical of McCarthys discipline at times on here, but i thought the ref was harsh on him on sat,it occured right underneath where i sit and a pen and a yellow would have been enough to punish what he did.

for leeds Butler was captain and he played well generally but was unsettled by pace throughout and Kelly had a fine game at r.b. and as leicester were offering no width due to having 10 players he had room to come forward and get involved high up the pitch which he did well.a high energy performance.

Douglas and Miller played in midfield, Douglas started in the middle, then moved to the right and finished in the middle again, neat and tidy but never creative or inventive enough, didnt get any crosses in that i can remember from the right. Miller was booked, he never imposed himself on the game, never bossed it didnt look as though he could ever open up a leicester defence happy to concede posession and take a point.he therefore saw plenty of the ball and had 3 good shooting oppertunities from the edge of the area but never threatened the target, once shooting over a keeperless goal from inside the area.

John O'Shea and Chris Fagan both featured for United's second string in their 4-1 win over Everton's reserves, with Fagan scoring after coming on for O'Shea. JOSH may force his way into the United squad for the League Cup Final now. No sign of Darron Gibson, which is a little odd as he scored last week, on the other hand he may be held back for the Manchester Senior Cup game on thursday. Saw Garvan's goal on TV, a sweetly struck volley from close range. Doyle got an assist for Reading's winner with a lovely left footed through ball, Trundle scored & Jon Douglas scored a really good goal for Leeds. Clinton Morrisson also scored. Not much joy for the Irish in the bottom end of the table. Alan Quinn's in trouble with the law.

I haven't heard anything about him in a while, he was getting a regular start in the reserves, albeit in various positions - he even played right full in one game. And then nothing since the last time I mentioned him, I didn't even hear he broke his arm. Google, yahoo and a9.com all show up nothing.

leicester v hull 3-2

Maybury played for and captained leicester, again in midfield and it seems to suit him, he has done fine there in the last few games anyway.Logan was on the bench again.

for hull, Andrews played in the middle holding and was fairly solid didnt do anything remarkable but kept posession simply,he was subbed late on as hull chased it.Delaney played at c.b. and i thought he had a fine game, very solid in the air and comfortable with it at feet, he showed good pace once or twice when isolated, a good game.

McCarthy will be available again for the next game and the side has leaked 4 in 2 games in his abscence, with the centre of defence not covering themselves in glory at times so it will be interesting to see if he comes straight back in.

heres an interview with Paddy McCarthy from the bluearmy site about his recent suspension and the need to clean up his game

McCarthy itching to get back to work

by Bill Anderson

After his two-match ban, Leicester City captain Paddy McCarthy can hardly wait to get back in the swing at Luton on Saturday.

He was badly missed in the 2-0 defeat at Ipswich as the two goals came from headers, but the Irishman hopes to get his place back despite Saturday's vital win over Hull.

He said: "It has been very frustrating, especially as the ban means it will have been three weeks out by the time Saturday comes round.

"The lads have done well, had a difficult day at Ipswich, but bounced back with a good result last Saturday."

McCarthy, although banned, travelled down to Suffolk with the rest of the team just to be part of the squad, the sort of demeanour that has him earmarked for the eventual full club captaincy currently held by Danny Tiatto.

More immediately, though, he wants to get through the rest of the season without another ban. He is on something of a knife-edge as, with 10 bookings to his name, one more would mean a suspension.

McCarthy said: "I just have to be careful if, or when, I get back in, and try not to pick up any silly bookings. In the position I play you might pick up a few along the way, but I have to try to stamp it out."

He is not taking his return for granted by any means. He watched Patrik Gerrbrand and Patrick Kisnorbo do well on Saturday and must now await the decision of boss Robert Kelly.

McCarthy, though, is pleased to see more points on the board and said: "Saturday was a massive win for us. It dragged Hull and Derby back into it.

"We set out with the simple aim when Robert took over to finish above whoever the bottom three would be.

"We are clear of that now but we are not going to sit back thinking the season is over. We must push on to get as high as we possibly can and lay a foundation for next season.

"We now have Luton, Millwall and Reading, and these three will be tough.

"Luton are difficult, especially on their home ground, and then Millwall is such a massive game before we have the league leaders back here, so we will not be picking up easy points.

"Last Saturday might not have been our best football but the most important thing was the victory and three points. That is how it is going to be from now on, not pretty but effective."

Lads Chris Hughtons son is playing in Spurs reserves at the moment

Having waited years to join our Academy on a full-time basis, Cian Hughton has been left frustrated by injury so far in his first year with us.

The 17-year-old started his Tottenham career almost nine years ago when he was on our books as a schoolboy, and then fulfilled an ambition by signing as a first year scholar last summer.

It's been a difficult season at times for the defender, but he still admits that he's enjoying his time here despite the groin injury which has restricted his appearances for Pat Holland's Under-18s.

"Although I’ve been fit for a good part of the season, I've not played as many times as I'd have liked by this stage of the campaign because recently I've been held back by this injury," said Enfield-born Cian, "but apart from that it’s going well and it’s great to be part of this Club.

"YOU CERTAINLY NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE BEING HERE FULL-TIME TO JUST COMING IN A FEW TIMES A WEEK. IT’S A LOT TOUGHER AND YOU DO FEEL MORE TIRED, ALTHOUGH I’M GETTING USED TO IT NOW. "Pre-season was tough as we did a lot of running and but I think the lads are feeling the benefit of that now. Unfortunately for me, I’m not as involved as I’d like. The injury has steadily got worse as the season has gone on and after the FA Youth Cup match, it was decided that I would have to stop playing and just rest, to try to get over it once and for all.

"It is slowly getting better and I should be playing again soon. It’s tough because everyone wants to play and I’m no different and this first year is a very important one. But I’m just keeping focused, getting my head down and making sure that when I’m ready to play again, I will still be fit and strong to do so."

On the pitch, results have been a bit inconsistent for the Under-18s, but they remain in the hunt for a top two finish which would see them qualify for the play-offs. They also lost 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers in the FA Youth Cup, a night which brought mixed emotions for Cian.

"The result was disappointing because we went out although we didn’t play badly, but on a personal note it was my first youth cup match and I played the full 90 minutes, so it was a milestone in my career."

Cian is, of course, the son of our first team coach Chris, who played 398 times for us and won FA Cup and UEFA Cup winners medals during his long and illustrious career as a left-back with us and the teenager would like nothing more than to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

"When you’re growing up and you see the medals he’s won and watch the videos of him, of course I’d love to emulate what he achieved in the game," said Cian. "I play in the same position as him and he’s always been an inspiration for me, he’s always helped me as much as he can.

"But it’s hard for him as well because he doesn’t want people to think there’s any favouritism towards me. That’s why I don’t talk to him during the day!"

Young Ipswich Town starlet Owen Garvan has signed a two year extension to his contract, that will keep him tied to the club until the summer of 2009.

It had long been imminent that Irishman Owen Garvan would extend his stay at Portman Road, despite interest from several Premiership clubs but he put pen to paper on a two year contract extension on Friday afternoon, alongside Joe Royle and David Sheepshanks.

The Town manager told the club website: Owen still had two years of his contract to run so there was never any panic over him signing. All the same it's nice when it's done.

"I said to him at the beginning of the season that he would be in and out of the side until Christmas and that in the new year I would be looking at him to become a pillar of the side. He looked at me a bit strangely at the time, but that's pretty much the way it has turned out.

"I was over in Ireland scouting last week and they are pretty excited by what is going on at Portman Road. They have heard about the progress of Owen and Shane Supple."

18 year old Owen Garvan spoke out recently of his desire to lead Town back into the Premiership and said that he wanted to be at the club for years to come.

Guys - what's the story with Daryll Clare?? I see he's left Crawley 'cos of wage cutbacks. He seems to flit from Conference club to club. He never seems to settle long and hasn't played much in the way of Football League in the last few years.

Ireland youth international Anthony Stokes has been hugely impressive for Neil Banfield’s Arsenal reserve team this term, playing an array of different attacking positions from out-an-out striker to roaming central midfielder.

But the Dubliner has had help from high places.

Speaking exclusively to Arsenal.com, Stokes outlined his immediate ambitions at the Club and spoke glowingly of the influence Arsenal’s more senior players have had on his own development.

“For the next six months I just want to do as well as I can in the reserves,” began the 17-year-old.

“From there I have no control. Every week I want to be as consistent as possible. Hopefully next year in the Carling Cup I’ll get one or two more appearances.

“I’ve trained with the first team on a good few occasions,” he continued. “It’s a great experience. It’s not so much that they give you tips but you pick things up from their game.

“If you’re watching the world’s elite players, you will see what they’re doing and it’s just amazing to be training with them - just to learn from them.

From his displays so far this term, it seems Stokes has been watching studiously.

Karl Moore and Garry Breen both played as Man City's U-18's triumphed 3-2 over Newcastle's U-18's in the FA Youth Cup. Breen had a shot stopped on the line and Moore had a goal bound shot pushed wide by the keeper. Moore's been impressing of late and was called into the reserve side a few weeks ago.

Haven't seen the review posted yet, but a few people have mentioned that Andy Reid scored in the reserves for Spurs on monday against Portsmouth. What's surprising is noone has mentioned Stephen Kelly got the other from about 35 yards!!

sorry but it looks like he got the 35 yarder against charlton, the goal against portsmouth was a dribbling special:

21mins: GOAL. Superb effort from Kelly. Picked ball up in his own half, dribbled past about three players, played it into Reid and then continued run, Reid produced perfect pass and Kelly steadied himself, skipped around Guatelli and slid the ball home. 1-0.

Clive Clarke got a full game for West ham, left midfield. Times only gave him 4/10, but nobody got better than 5/10.

I wouldn't read too much into that, Pardew rested most of his first team with tonight's FA Cup game with Man City in mind, Pearce did the same for City against Wigan, Stephen Ireland started his first game in ages, and got the highest ranked Man City player from Manchester Evening News
