That has me wondering whether it was Burley that wanted him at Hearts in the first place. Any move for Potter is a good move at this stage so hopefully he gets first team football.

Early days yet but it seems that Long can play either as a striker or as a winger. I agree with Coppell's strategy of resting his best players for the league.

Good to see Kilbane back in form. I wouldn't start him against Cyprus but the more options for Stan the better.
Ever since he has come back into form so have we!!! he is a very important player for us and to be honest i like him he gets loads of stick but he is one of our most under rated players IMO.

didn't go today but what i have been told he was brilliant.

fantastic today. when he plays like that he is very good. he surprises me at times when he runs with the ball. good control at pace and strong. fuk me strong. very hard to knock him off the ball. one move today, left 3 chelsea players for dead and layed off a good pass.
yet next week he could be fuking awful. Laughing
if only every week.

Competition for places is the answer: VDM looked to have seen Kilbane off. Kilbane's taken his chance since VDM has been injured.
There's a lesson there somewhere.

Very good point, Stanley. Competiton for places is very important. I also liked the point Nigsy made about this boy never hiding.
Really pleased for him. Shame on those who've been slagging him off, and more so those who've booed him at the game.

About time the lad got a bit of praise, he deserves it as he has been playing quite well for a few weeks and as allready said never hides even when things aren't going for him.
Everytime I see him, I can't help thinking he is a much better player in the centre than on the left, where he plays for Ireland.

He was excellent today, definitely his best game this season. Good to see the fella hitting form again, especially after the stick he's taken from the crowd early in the season.

leicester v southampton 1-0
yeah, McCarthy was on top form allright in the middle of 3 c.b,'s, i dont remember him loosing a header in the whole match and only gave it away twice when playing it out from the back, once he went and won it straight back and on the other occasion he was atemptimg a long diagonal ball but it was overhit and went for a throw so no harm done either time.he was also active at the other end nearly scoring with headers fron set plays twice, both looping narrowly over having timed his run well on one and having been involved in the build up to the other with a clever header from a half cleared corner.
Mayburys at r.w.b. performance overall was better than of late but still a bit hit and miss as he gave in away 4 of the first 5 times he was in good posession and was heartless in a couple of 50/50's early on, he also missed a very presentable one on one chance form a tight angle when he didnt manage to even work the keeper but that said he did some good defensive work and played his way into the game despite early sloppiness.
Darren Potter played in the middle for southampton wearing nr.4 and early on it seemed to be passing him by but he then began demanding the ball rather than just showing for it and by the end his team mates were seeking him out,id be interested to see the stats as i dont recall him giving it away much but always looking for a forward pass.he seemed a bit frustrated with his strikers quality of movement and lack of control at times and vented these frustrations.in injury time as his side broke he drifted wide and with his first touch put his striker in in a one v one but the player missed. He also produced in my opinion the moment ot the match when he took posession in his third, facing his own goal while double marked and turned leaving both players for dead, took the ball forward and with a beautifull long diagonal ball forced a corner, defence to attack in 3 touches. overall he had a good game im my opinion and looked much more at home in the middle then when on the right for l'pool.

Wigan didn't do too well in their last 2 games without Kavanagh. I really think they'd be in the bottom half without him.

Maybury and McCarthy both played and Maybury was booked but also seems to have done ok again. McCarthy is said to have been booked on some reports and not on some others but the O.S. says he was booked. he definately captained the side to their first points in quite a while as they moved out of the bottom 3.he also made a vital goal-line clearance early on.

Steve Bruce is determined to sign Ireland international Stephen Kelly at the end of the season.
The Tottenham Hotspur fullback has voiced his concern at being largely left on the sidelines at White Hart Lane this season, and admits he is prepared to move on.
It is believed that Birmingham failed with a deadline-day bid to bring him to St Andrews, yet manager Steve Bruce will swoop again at the end of the season.
The Blues boss sees the Ireland international as the perfect replacement for Mario Melchiot, with the former Chelsea man set to move on in the summer.

Owen Garvan was given MOTM in The Times this morning. I saw a bit of the game too and Alan Lee set up the winner. Lee is short on finesse but long on commitment & very good in the air. It looks like the Ipswich move has done him the world of good. Shane Supple was injured. Doc was unlucky to be credited (debited?) with an own goal, as the Ipswich striker clearly handled the ball for the winner.
Conrad Logan, Andy Keogh & Michael Reddy all got given MOTM in their respective games too. Brian Barry-Murphy was singled out as having had a stinker though!
I didn't see it but I read that Paddy McCarthy set up Leicester's winner.

i wasnt at the game this week stutt, but he did set up the winner and was captain again as the team won games back to back for the first time this season, McCarthy is also credited with a fine block on a goalbound effort and missing a presentable chance from close range in the game.Maybury also played and set up a chance with a chipped pass. it was again a 3 man central defence with Maybury at r.w.b.

Ipswich boss Joe Royle has hailed teenager Owen Garvan for his maturity and tipped him for senior international honours.
Royle gave the young Dubliner his senior debut on the opening day of the season and the midfielder, who only turned 18 last month, has since cemented his place.
Royle hailed Garvan's display in the win at Norwich on Sunday and said: "For a kid to run a game like that was a magnificent achievement. "He has steadily grown in stature over the past six months and the great thing is that there is still more to come.
"Owen has this lovely habit of always being able to pick out a team-mate with his passes, short or long, and I can see him going on to win a lot of caps for Ireland."
http://oneteaminireland.bravehost.com/
RISING star Owen Garvan lit up the East Anglian derby and then proclaimed that the 2-1 win will give everybody connected with Ipswich Town a huge lift.
Garvan, 18 last week, was man of the match in a Championship derby that saw the Blues much too good for Norwich City at Carrow Road yesterday.
The Irish youth international faces a ban next week after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the game that was televised live on satellite television.
“This is just the result that will give everybody connected with Ipswich Town a huge lift,” said ace midfielder Garvan.
“Our fans will enjoy it, and they deserve to be rewarded for their support, which was fantastic again yesterday.
“Club officials will take heart from it, and the management will be pleased to gain a deserved three points in such a big match.
“And as far as the players are concerned it will do our confidence no harm at all. We are still aiming for the play-offs.
“Hopefully we can give our fans many more days like the one they enjoyed yesterday.”
Garvan, who was booked for dissent when Leeds won a controversial penalty late on in last Tuesday's 1-1 draw, received a yellow yesterday for a lunge at Robert Earnshaw.
This brought his season's tally to five and he is set to miss next Tuesday's match at Crewe.
“We fully deserved our success, and the win was a wonderful delayed 18th birthday present for me,” added Garvan, who made his debut at the start of the season.
He is part of a new side that manager Joe Royle is building and the Blues were much too good for the Canaries despite having a spot of fortune in both goals.

Great goal & generally very good performance by Hunt alright.
Very interesting game from an "Irish watching" perspective.
Marcos Painter got SKY's MOTM. Composed commanding performance. It's not just the nu-mullet that is John Terry-esque.
Alex Bruce had some wild moments (bad tackle on Kitson, badly brushed aside by Hunt for Reading's goal) but recovered well and showed decent potential in the end. Bad nose. You can see why his dad never got his fixed :)
Stack had a quiet but decent game. Unlucky with Brum's first goal, helpless with the second.
Shane Long never got into the game & had no impact. But he was up against a future World Cup winning centre-back partnership! Lovely running style though, athletic looking.
On Hunt: left sided utility player. Looks of the same mould as Davey Langan. Tenacious, quick & uses the ball well. Potential to fill the Irish left-back position in due course?
The young lad Sinnott was on the bench. Wasn't he just bought from Bray?

Blackburn beat Chelsea, Man Utd for Irish kid Gunning
Ireland Under 15 international Gavin Gunning has indicated he's ready to snub the Premier League champions and sign for Rovers after both clubs spent months pursuing the highly-rated teenager.
The 15-year-old is a powerful six foot-plus centre half, who lists former Arsenal and England stalwart Tony Adams amongst his heroes, and he emerged as a target for the likes of Chelsea, Rovers, Manchester United and Arsenal after turning in some impressive performances for Crumlin United in Ireland.
Rovers' Academy director, Bobby Downes, has hailed Gunning's potential capture as a significant piece of business for the club, telling the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: "He hasn't signed for us as yet but he has indicated he will do, which would be a great coup for us.
"He's only 15 but he's a very promising young player and we've put a lot of effort into trying to get him here.
"Mark Hughes and his staff have indicated there will be chances for some of our young players in the first team, and some of them have already started training with the first team squad, which is something that never happened under Graeme Souness.
"That's something that we have been able to sell to Gavin, that he's more likely to get his chance here than he would at some of the other clubs."
Gunning will sign a one-year scholarship form with Rovers, which will take him through to his sixteenth birthday at the end of January 2007, when he will then transfer to a two-and-a-half year professional contract, tying him up to the end of the 2008/9 season.
John Stokes, the Irish representative for the Stellar Group, who advise Gunning, said that Gavin and his family were thrilled that a move to the Premier League had been secured.
"We are all delighted for Gavin, it is great news for the lad. He has worked very hard to get to this stage and was being watched regularly by several clubs from England," said Stokes.
"But he knew that he just had to focus on his football and everything would fall into place.
"He and his family are really looking forward to seeing him progress at Blackburn and I wish him every success at his new club.
"Hopefully he can go on to fulfil his huge promise and enjoy a successful career in top level football."

looks like Kyle Moran made the sub's bench for United's reserves, not bad, only 17 or 18, and a striker I think.

leicester v derby 2-2
McCarthy and Maybury played, the latter coming straight back into the side having been suspended for the last game.leicester reverted to a 4-4-2 formation with McCarthy in the middle at the back and Maybury lining up on the right side of midfield, id not seen him playing there before but he had a fine game, involved throughout and solid in posession with occasional pieces of inventive play.as you'd expect he covered back very well.he didnt ever skip round the fullback and whip crosses in like a natural wide player but still popped up with a goal when he burst past the fullback at full pace onto a dead weight ball and smashed leicester into the lead from a tight angle.his pass also made the opener.
McCarty's performance was on the money again,a very determined gritty performance from him in an east-midlands derby match which had a bit if an edge to it at times.not much room or time for pretty stuff and he headed everything away through the game and distributed it well but simply.he didnt have any joy in the opponents area as he was picked up by Moore, the huge ex-west brom player.he was captain again and not at fault for either derby goal.
Jeff Kenna played for derby.
match report with plenty about Maybury:

player ratings from unofficial 'the blue army' site: How they rated
Paddy McCarthy: Really growing into the captain's role, his determination has become a symbol of a rejuvenated team.
Alan Maybury: City's top man. Sharp in the tackle and good ball distribution, he played in Iain Hume for his goal and grabbed the second with a well-struck drive.
Alan Lee scored again last night. Hes on a great run of form recently

Apparently much sought after Peterborough defender Sean St Ledger is Irish.. He trained with the 21s, but hasn't played yet..
