It's interesting that we're talking about playing attacking full backs, but Italy under Prandelli are playing without any wingers at all and their full backs get up and down all day long. It's a long way from Catenaccio.
Arsenal's invincibles played without any wingers too. I think we're in agreement. Nominally, shape means nothing in regard to whether a team is attack or defence minded.

But how invincible were they really? They only won one trophy that season, accumulated a fairly standard winning points total and lost six in all competitions. I realise this is completely beside the point though :)

Keane rejected a move to Real Madrid to play for Celtic.

On a related note, is there any point buying the new book when virtually the entire thing has already been posted on the Irish Independent?

For a lad that demands such high standards, I think it's very unprofessional of him that it is this week that his book is being released and extracts published in the paper.

DannyInvincible
09/10/2014, 12:12 AM
The timing of the book's publication only serves as a needless distraction in the run-up to two important games and it is a bit inconsiderate. In his (slim) defence, however, neither he nor the publishers had anything to do with the extracts being published early (as far as we know). The reason why pretty much the entire book has been made public before tomorrow's official release date is because a Tesco store in Burnage, Manchester erroneously made copies available for sale last Monday morning (https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/early-doors/roy-keane-s-new-book--leaked--after-blunder-in-burnage-161700019.html) before realising their mistake and removing them from sale again. By that time though, a journalist had managed to get his hands on a copy, so it's not as if he was going to keep it a secret.

Maybe the leaking was a promotional gimmick; it has generated a huge amount of publicity, after all.

This kind of thing was inevitable with Keane's appointment. Wait until he starts clashing with players or having a go at fans or whatever. Then the media circus will really get going.

there doesn't appear to be too much about Ireland in the book so I fail to see how a few stories about Keanes relationship with Alex Ferguson and how he still hates Alf Inge Halland has the slightest affect on the preparation for the upcoming games.

The FAI should stage a special session of Roy reading extracts from his book live from the AVIVA, an hour before the Gib game. It'd double the attendance.

And it actually reminds the public that football exists and from time to time an Irishman is a key protagonist. If it wasn't for Keane all the media chat would be about not having any decent players, Grealish, Stephen Ireland and any other disruptive nonsense they can think of.

Press conferences have been devoted to it and it seems Martin and the players are being asked for their thoughts on it when approached by reporters. Maybe it's not so much of a big deal and they can all remain fully-focused (or perhaps it even takes some of the spotlight and pressure off, as AB says), but I suspect it's the type of distraction for which Roy would have very little time if it were centred around another member of staff or one of his players.

Even James McClean has revealed he's just started penning his own memoirs (book of tweets) now!: http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/mccleans-memoirs-plan-bemuses-oneill-290514.html

Just as Martin O’Neill seemed to be accepting questions on Roy Keane’s book being a matter of routine, along comes James McClean to trouble his Ireland manager with plans to pen his own memoirs.

That the 25-year-old — who placed O’Neill in enough predicaments during their time together at Sunderland through his frequent outbursts on social media — would be considering such a venture perplexes O’Neill.

“You’re talking about James McClean?” was the manager’s retort to the media relaying the player’s intentions from his own interview minutes earlier after training at Gannon Park.

“Hmm. I thought you wrote an autobiography when you’d done something. Hmm. No, he’s only a kid isn’t he? Hmm. Well, good luck to him.”

When asked for his views on Keane’s controversial book, McClean had deadpanned “That’s Roy’s business” before adding, “I’ve actually started one myself; I’m in the early stages.”

Once established he wasn’t joking, the winger was asked to suggest a possible title. He snapped back: “Marmite, you’ll either like it or hate it!”

Harry Redknapp is alleged to have claimed Roy was once a timid soul: http://balls.ie/football/one-hell-of-a-quote-harry-redknapp-roy-keane/

Do you know why it took so long for Roy Keane to get his break as a kid? He was a bit timid. Unbelievable isn’t it? But those were the words of our Irish scout, and he knew him inside out.

He was a right-winger at the time, and they thought he was a bit soft. It is amazing how people change.

I won't believe it until I've heard it from the horse's mouth, straight out the driver window of his 4x4 in the QPR carpark!

McClean is the type of player/person, if he wasn't Irish, you'd wish for bad things to happen to me. Or maybe it's just me.

We'd all wish for bad things to happen to you, Kingdom! :p

Ack, I like him. He's a solid worker and puts his head down. He can brash and outspoken, sure, but it makes a colourful change from the utterly neutral, robotic and personality-less James Milner types who peddle nothing but the same old hackneyed platitudes and clichés. He's a local lad too, which, of course, helps. But just so you don't think I'm completely biased due to that, I'm not as keen on Gibson's attitude. :)

Enjoying it so far. Probably a quarter of the way through. Just got to the bit where Fergie and himself having their big 'fall out'.

Has some nice things to say about Brian Kerr.

Well written (no surprises with Doyle's involvement). I contrast this with the Neville book I recently read which was dross.

The following quote is from Roy's book: "If training starts at half past ten and a player is coming in at twenty past ten I would class that as being late."

Didn't he only go and show up late for his press conference earlier?

Interesting to read how he says he shouldn't have played games when he was injured, tired, felt a strain and how it could have helped him to play longer than he did. He use to laugh at foreign players when they wouldn't play but when he looks back they all played for a few years more than him because they listened to their bodies.

Interesting in the light of McCarthy accusing him of faking injury.
I'd say at that stage of his career he was probably feeling the strain somewhat, that is not to say he wasn't faking, only he knows the answers.

In the index to his first book, 8 out of the nine references to Sheffield Wednesday were actually to Sheffield United. In his second book, he refers to being 3 or 4 goals up against Wednesday and how they came back and got two and how while they can afford to do that against the likes of Wednesday, they can't do it against the better clubs. He's gone even further up by Christmas card list now ;) (p.s. Only read it at the bookshop in the airport. Did NOT buy the book).

Five games without a win now at Villa, including a loss last night against the bottom side. "The Keane impact" referred to by TOWK seems to have dissipated.

Finished the Keano book tonight.

He mentions a few Irish lads he's fallen out with, saying he was too harsh on Damien Delaney, McShane had a great attitude, he understood Walters wanting to go to Premiership.
Said David Connolly was a bit odd at times but he was a goalscorer so he could be as odd as he liked.
Mentioned Matt Holland singing God Save The Queen at the top of his voice in a cup final.
Says he likes the look of Hendrick and is very impressed with McCarthy and Coleman.

He comes across very human and, I have to say, much happier than in the first book.
Seems to really be enjoying working with O'Neill and Ireland.

There are some genuinely funny moments in the book. He is quite self-effacing and really is an interesting character.

I'm not sure whether Roddy Doyle is really clever in making it seem like it's just Roy talking...or if it is actually just Roy talking and Doyle simply documented it.
