I hope i never have to see paul mcshane play for Ireland again. Not only because he is nowhere near good enough, but the lad has a serious attitude problem. How many times have we seen him screaming at his own team-mates and getting involved with opposition players? And i dont know if anybody noticed at the Argentina game but he took a poor touch on the right wing in the opposition half, the ball went over the sideline, and mchsane decided it would be a good idea to half volley the ball directly into the crowd. Not only that but i met him recently and when i asked him to sign an autograph for my nephew his response was 'get away will ya' poor professional.

Actually if you look through my posts, im one of the few people who has never resorted to personal insults towards mcshane and have always supported him as i do anyone who pulls on the green shirt, but his attitude has changed my opinion.

I'd go along with that. His unshakable confidence in his own meagre ability is something I find, in equal measure, both admirable and terrifying.

By the North Beach in greystones, i have no idea what he was doing there (is he from there?) but he was standing alone and didnt look particularly busy so i didnt think it would be a big deal to ask. I have no doubt at all that hes a very commited footballer who wears his heart on his sleeve, anyone can see that, i just havent been impressed with his professionalism at times.

Yeah thats where hes from. His dad died I think in the last 6 months so maybe he was just a bit upset and wanted time to himself. Ive never met the lad personally but my cousin is from Greystones too and is a mate of his and tells me hes a good fella so I would tend to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one

Well thats fair enough so. Im happy to give him the benefit of the doubt and hopefully he'll mature into a decent player.

He wasn't even on the bench for Hull yesterday, anyone know why? Is he injured? Not a good thing if our first choice right back isn't even making the bench for a Championship club.

The thought crossed my mind that maybe he was played on Wednesday because Trap wanted him in the shop window. Wishful thinking I know!

...and they lost 4-0 to Millwall in the Championship, whereas fellow Irish right back Stephen Kelly played a full 90mins for Fulham in their 0-0 draw with Bolton in the Premiership. How Trap preferred McShane to Kelly against Argentina is a mystery. He shouldn't be next nor near our team/squad in all fairness.

Interesting that Kelly was left full though. Foley started right full - they should be the starters imo if they hold down these positions for their clubs

Reading the Sun today (some people do), I came across this titbit from the Hull game.
"McShane put in a great shift for Hull and caused more problems than the highly-rated John Bostock - on loan from Tottenham - who looked lightweight against the Lions' no-nonsense defence."

A bit more on it here, although still somewhat vague: http://www.98fm.com/news-sport/sport/holloway-carling-blackpool-2508943/

Paul McShane limped out of Hull City’s Carling Cup loss to Brentford. He has a hamstring strain and faces a race against the clock to be fit for the start of Ireland’s Euro Qualifiers next month.

What a conundrum; I wouldn't ordinarily wish injury on any professional football player, but fecking 'ell, I don't want to see McShane play for Ireland again. I hope his injury keeps him out long enough for someone else to come in and take his place.

Paul McShane turns up for Ireland. He doesn't pick himself, he doesn't put himself on as a sub and he doesn't intentionally **** everyone off with his performances. In fact he wears his heart on his sleeve for Ireland and his brilliant attitude is probably one of the main reasons he gets a games consistently.

Shame on everyone here wishing injury upon the lad. Its up to the management and the other prospective right backs/centre backs to force McShane out of the team. Get well soon Paul.

I used to stick up for McShane on here but not any more. Wishing injury on a player might sound harsh but do we want to lose to Armenia because McShane either

1) forgets to pick up his man at a corner
2) gives their striker a free run on goal after passing the ball to him
3) makes a rash tackle inside our penalty box in injury time.

And either he's the best option in the squad, or Trapattoni doesn't know his right backs. I'm betting on the former, sadly.

World class attitude. Sunday league ability. That's our Paul.

But to be fair, the only person I'd ever seriously wish injury upon is Bill Gates. Momentarily, in a blue screen rage.

Have to agree it's not his fault he is being picked ahead of players that are possibly better than him. Very difficult to turn down playing for your country; the manager decides who is good enough.

DannyInvincible
26/08/2010, 5:26 PM
Even if McShane did turn down a call-up, I'm sure people would chastise for turning his back on his country. It's a no-win situation for him. Ultimately, responsibility lies with Trapattoni. If anyone's to be criticised for McShane lining out for us, unfortunately, it's Trap. Obviously, nobody in their right mind is going to turn down playing for their country. Unless they're Stephen Ireland. Then again, it's debatable as to whether or not he has a right mind at all...

I don't think anyone would seriously wish injury on him, but if he misses out and Kelly/Foley get the chance to show what they can do in a competitive international, it would be of enormous benefit to us in my opinion

Our system is stagnant without a full back in the vein of Coleman, but of course he would have to be competent at defending.

I don't remember saying he was good enough for the epl.
When he was at Hull in the epl, I said he had every chance to be good enough, but the odds were against it happening.
I thought he would have gone straight back down to the championship level when struggling with Sunderland.

Not a fan of 'I told you so' posts, especially given McShane has many years ahead of him. I'm not a McShane fan but I wouldn't be surprised to see him play in the Premier League again.

Did you say the same when Andy Reid went out on loan to a team in the Championship even worse than Barnsley (i.e. the Blunts)? Sean St Ledger, our incumbent centre half, is playing for the bottom team in the Championship.

Too early to write his Irish obituary particularly since we're not exactly flush with cover in the defence.

It's not, he's ****e.

Sorry that was immature. We've plenty of cover across the backline now.
Right full, Josh, Kelly, Foley, Coleman
Centre half Dunney, Ledger, Josh, kelly (at a push) O'Dea, Clark

All of those players are better options than Paul McShane. Even at centre half, Duffy if we were really stuck. Wilson has EPL experience at centre half.

McShane's time in the Irish squad should be coming to an end.

That's only 8 for 4 places and I for one would not select O'Dea ahead of McShane. At least the latter has some pace to make up for his mistakes and he's also better in the air but the point I was making anyway is that the mere fact that he's gone to Barnsley doesn't mean he's finished as an Irish international.
