Aertel Syndrome at the beeb.:D
Edit: Maybe Not...
INNINGS BREAK
Ireland have managed to put up a respectable 183-8 in their truncated innings of 48 overs. Although the Irish lost an early wicket, a fifty partnership between Bray and Morgan at a good pace steadied the innings. But once they were gone, Ireland lost their way and the runs dried up. But a flurry of runs at the death got them to 183. Chasing this total should be a walk in the park for the West Indies but with rainy weather and the possibility of Duckworth-Lewis method being applied anything could happen.

West Indies have been set a revised target of 190 runs to win in 48 overs by Duckworth-Lewis method.
West Indies now 147/2.
They need a massive 43 off 19 overs.

Comfortable win for the Winidies in the end, the Irish never tested bowling wise and gave away cheap wickets when batting.
As seems to be a constant, one element fails while the others work fine. Bowling was ok, fielding was good, the batting didn't give them a hope in hell though. Gayle's overs were frustrating as anything to watch.
India probably out after losing to Sri Lanka.

Can you Bermuda with 21 Stone Leverrock beating Bangladesh, no chance, India are out 99%

Which means the two biggest countries in terms of population and support are out - a disaster for TV figures for the rest of the tournament, if nothing else.

If those countries were true fans, they would look at the rest of the tournament, I know I would.

Yes they can 96-3 @ 18 Overs.
Possible winnable game there in the last 8.

'the big one' is coming up this friday as we get set to face the mighty england. our odds are quoted as 6/1, making england our second easiest opponents of the Super 8s(behind bangladesh). you'd imagine the players will be massively up for this and the england team could be a bit nervous. as with all the rest of our games i'm firstly hoping the team can give a decent account of themselves and that the wonders of sport can somehow lead to another remarkable win as ireland makes an impact on the cricket world. one thing i'm afraid of is that the support won't be as vociferous as in jamaica as the next few games are in guyana. people wouldnt have expected the team to progress and the government have said the country is a bit dodgy to travel to meaning the 'blarney army' wont be as numerous or vocal, but then again we're usually pretty enterprising!!
come on ireland

Looking forward to it - going to the pub after work with a couple of England fans.
Little do they realise that I will be deploying the renouned Stuttgart Defence - nobody expects us to do anything, so it's all a laugh to me. Unless of course, we did happen to beat them.
Where's me old Houghton T-shirt?
Should be a walk in the park.

A remarkable end to the Sri Lanka-South Africa game tonight. South Africa were cruising towards their modest target of 210 when Lasith Malinga took the World Cup's first ever double hat-trick (four wickets in four balls) to place Sri Lanka within spitting distance of the most astonishing turnaround in World Cup history. Malinga almost took five in five, but shaved Langeveldt's off stump with his fifth delivery. After a few more close calls, Peterson edged another Malinga delivery for four to drag South Africa home.

I can't believe this. I came home from my German class, switched on and saw that they needed 4 runs to win with five wickets in hand, and switched over!

Saw that on the BBC highlights when I came back from the match - amazing stuff. :)
Incidentally, how much contempt are the BBC showing for the World Cup? Thought they would improve their highlights package for the Super 8s but they're still on later than an eircom league show on TV3. And I see that Sky have a studio in a converted palatial villa overlooking a beach in Barbados whereas BBC sit in a corner of some dive bar where the chatter of the punters drowns out their analysis. More concerned with showing silly montages than the actual game itself.

In fairness its pretty hard to show an 8 hour game in 20 minutes.
Seen the last two wickets live. He was sensationally close to winning the game too.

I think the scheduling of their highlights packaging is prescribed by their agreement with Sky. Bear in mind that they haven't been able to broadcast any meaningful international cricket for almost a decade and have lost most of their talent to other networks. Nowadays they mostly focus on their superb radio coverage.

Does anyone else think Malinga's bowling action is a bit odd? It's barely overarm most of the time.

He's been credited in some quarters with reviving the roundarm style of bowling which was current in the 19th century.

Was just watching that over lunch today and it did seem very like throwing rather than bowling. Not sure how he was getting away with it.

It's a VERY odd action, but as long as his arm is straight, it's legal.

Wasn't the explanation for Murali's unusual bowling action some sort of abnormality or defect in his arm that either prevented him bowling in a more orthodox way or allowed him to bowl in a way most people couldn't:confused:
Possibly something similar here.

speaking of 19th century here's a piece in today's times on the prevalence of cricket in kilkenny back then.

I think that the way all the Sri Lankan bowlers bowl is different from the usual way, does it really matter how you throw a ball, I remember playing in school and the coach said that 3 fingers had to cover the ball and had to be an overarm throw.

Takes a bit of getting used to again going by Smith and Kallis' reactions after he bowled his first ball at them.

Because its much harder to control the direction than if you have the arm vertical. Most people would be spraying wides all over the place.

Probably a lot easier to control length though, that's what I found hardest when I bowled. I used to do a lot of unintentional full tosses at head height, my only chance of getting a batsman out was to hit him on the head and hospitalise him :D
I would say it is easier to control both line and length using his method.

In a game against New Zealand earlier this year, the umpires had to take off their ties because the balls were being delivered from in front of their ties and were distracting the batsmen :D
Russell Court Hotel today is the place to watch the game for any cricket fans.

"Unintentional" Yeah sure...:D
My arm tends to drift just a little bit away from vertical, and the directoion goes awry very quickly when that happens. Length usually isn't as big an issue for me. Horses for courses, I guess.

Looks like Ireland are going to field their regular first choice XI against England today, with Johnston returning after injury. Porterfield is a lucky man to retain his place after scores of 0, 13 and 0. He can probably thank his performances in Kenya for his continued participation. I'm surprised Kenny Carroll hasn't been given a chance, as a left-hander/right-hander opening combination can often disrupt a bowler's rhythm (plus his chinaman bowling could be useful on a pitch which might take spin.)
TheBoss

Caroll was only played a few serious games for Ireland, could have been risky.
Only 25 Mins to go now, We are fielding first.

Good stuff. Vaughan chose to bat. Our chance of victory batting first would have been less than 3%. Bopara retains his place for England ahead of part-time spinner Dalrymple, which is an interesting selection in the circumstances.

Dalrymple is a better player imo, That is a big help.
