Enjoy Stu!
Cheers!

It's an ok game, not a great one. 0-0 at halftime. Hennessy's done fine. Disallowed a goal for Rapid for handball; usual protests but they were token enough and he was right on the spot so probably right.

Did give Debrecen a free from 20 yards when I (and everyone else) thought it was a good tackle. Booked the Rapid defender too. Debrecen hit the post from the free, so he was nearly doubly unpopular.

But overall he's doing fine

Breidablik are 5-0 down at half-time away to Zrinskij Mostar (and down to ten men). Another Euro exit that looks worse by the week

Brugge won 5-1 in the end against KA

Dundalk 2.0 have played good football bar the away leg in the Faroe Islands. Deserved a draw out of this game and Duffy should have made sure of it, very poor ref.

A few of the tobol players looked out on their feet and they arent that great of a side. Getting out straight after the game and back home gives them a very good chance of winning the home leg - based off what Tobol showed tonight.
Dundalk 2.0?

Breidablik getting an absolute pasting in their game. 6 nil down after 55 minutes in Bosnia. Granted down to 10 but were 3 down with 11. Probably playing Struga in the ECL PO so still a good chance of making the groups.

I see Ferencvaros won away 6-1 against Hamrun. Far too good a side for the champions path of the ECL.

They’ve pulled back 2 goals even with 10 men. Still obviously dead in the water in terms of progression but it shows they're a decent side going forward despite the defensive frailties (although I haven’t seen them play, so one could easily be the cause of the other)

I would agree with you, they have a lot of goals in them but are fragile at the back against teams with a bit of quality.

Finished 0-0 in Vienna. Rapid the better side overall but only really forced one save of note. Debrecen hit the post twice so a draw a fair result.

Thought Hennessy was excellent overall. Would like to see that first half freekick again, but otherwise he was well on top of everything with the minimum of fuss

Amazingly we're still holding on to 32nd in the coefficient stakes.

Kazakhstan are now just one win off us after two wins and a draw this week - they may pass us next week whatever Derry do. Kosovo also got a win this week and should progress to meet BATE Borisov in the playoffs. You'd fancy them in that; Belarus football has gone through the floor lately; sanctions for Ukraine not helping.

Finland (0.250 behind) lost 2-1 in Azerbaijan today; they could turn that around in the home leg which would guarantee the groups; lose and they've a tricky tie against Farul Constanta of Romania next. Bosnia (1.500 behind us) have a side all but confirmed in the groups after Zrinskij won 6-2 today. The Faroes (1.125 behind) have a side confirmed in the groups; they'll face either Sheriff or Antwerp next and could get a result off Sheriff. Iceland (2.042 behind, but with only three teams so each result is worth 33% more) face Struga or Swift Hesperange. for a place in the groups. That's Breidablik of course - they got battered v Copenhagen and Zrinskij, but they could well beat either of those two.

There's no bonus points for reaching the Europa League or Conference League groups (I thought there was) but it's double points and six games.

So still looking we'll drop down to around 36th by the end of the season. Assuming Derry don't do anything mad like reach the groups of course!

They'd need to be getting well compensated by RTE to justify that.

At least the club can say it helps fans who can't afford to travel for it.

I thought there was a four-point bonus for taking part in CL and EL group stages, nothing for the Conference League.

Four point bonus for reaching the CL groups only -

https://kassiesa.net/uefa/calc.html

Seems a bit unfair not to give maybe a two-point bonus for the Europa League given it's a better achievement than reaching the Conference League groups, yet you're likely to score fewer points in it for that same reason

Hearts pull one back; life in that for the second leg

KA 3-0 down against Club Brugge coming up to halftime; another side who beat LoI opposition not doing great in the next tie

Currently at the Rapid Wien v Debrecen match kicking off shortly. Rob Hennessy in charge. This will be interesting!

Edit - Brugge make it 4-0 before halftime

Rapid said you are banned for bringing the luck of the LOI with you for their home match.

We're 34th as of now, so just outside having an extra Europa league spot for 2025 (top 33). Armenia and Latvia are level with us on points but they are ahead of us due to having a higher total in the most current season.

The Icelandic side that Rovers lost to who many are trying to make out to be so great just got smashed 6-2 by Zrinjski Mostar after they lost 8-3 on Agg to Copenhagen. The question I have is are Rovers fans on here still in the denial stage or have they accepted just how utterly embarrassing their performance/result was in QR1?

Feck! It just shows how narrow the margins are to bringing even more UEFA money and buzz to our league.

It'll be mad when the Faroese end up with 5 teams in Europe every year, with clubs full of international mercenaries due to the sheer wealth European football is bringing them :D

The BATE match had a great crowd I remember. Near capacity I’d say. I think Tallaght only had 2 stands at that time tho - so about 6k capacity. Also the tie was still in the balance for the leg in Tallaght. And Dundalk is a hell of a lot closer than Derry so people could easily make the round trip that eve.

This is the only thing that would boost the crowd imo. Shame about not getting the Windsor go ahead even just for novelty. Derry should have leaned on their history and this being part of a peace process and bridge building. It is ridiculous but it probaby would have gotten the go ahead if Delaney was still at UEFA and shows that these decisions can be a bit arbitrary.

One of the most miserable footballing nights ever was when Dundalk played the 2nd leg v Varteks after being hammered in the 1st leg. There was barely a couple of hundred in attendance. As a side note, the transfer fee for David Crawley's move from Dundalk to Shels was the use of Tolka for that European game - always thought that was very LoI/glitw moment!

That is mad! Considering the respective draws, its one that got away. Dundalk could have gone a long way to helping ensure European qualification in 2024 with that extra place never mind what 2023 progression could have brought. Rovers let the league down in terms of ranking by not getting through 1 round at least, pats put up a fight but ho hum, Derry could nab a few more co-eff points..

Just to be clear; one of the Conference league spots gets upgraded to a Europa league spot when you hit 33rd on the ranking (with the benefit of parachuting to the ECL). The number of places still remains at four though.

Worth noting as well that next year one of our teams (the Cup winners I think) will be starting in the second round of the Conference League - so less coefficient points available (albeit zero chance of getting knocked out in round 1)

So these things do have a direct impact on the LoI alright

Is this confirmed?

pineapple stu
12/08/2023, 6:26 AM
Well it's very likely rather than confirmed.

This year the domestic cup winners of the sides ranked 40-55 started in round 1, and we were ranked 40th. The previous year it was 42-55 that started on round 1, so Pat's started in round 2 as we were ranked 37th. And in the first year it was 36-55 starting in round 1, and we were 40th

Next year we'll be ranked 36th, and Bert Kassies' site is showing 39-55 starting in round 1 - https://kassiesa.net/uefa/AccessList2024.html. There may be little tweaks such as Russian clubs still being banned, but nothing major

Molde were the better team no doubt but KI manfully brought it to the wire and even had a few gilded chances of their own. About 700 traveled to support them. It's about the only way an unseeded team can make progress to the 3rd qual rd, by catching a highish seed on the hop in the 1st round and thereby acquiring a seeded ranking in the 2nd qual round. Even with the seed they were drawn against the Swedish title holders. It's no bed of roses being a minnow.

Daft challenge there from Tobol and Derry 1-0 up from the spot. Game on!

Austria Wien v Legia also worth a shout. Wien 2-1 up from the first leg in Poland, but Legia went 3-0 up in Austria, so 4-2 on aggregate. Wien made it 4-4 on the 83rd minute - heading for extra time. Legia scored on 87, Wien had a player sent off on 89, and then equalised in the seventh minute of injury time for 5-5. But there was still time for Legia to win it in the 10th minute of injury time, and they go through 6-5 on aggregate.

Tough break at the end for Derry. Think they'd have been the first Irish team to win three rounds in Europe? Definitely an element that the old weakness of poor finishing cost them. But a great effort - even if Basel must have been kicking themselves watching - to end what's been a really poor campaign overall

Dundalk did it in 2020 but of course they were single leg ties.

Very cruel way to go out. As close as any side has come to winning through 3 2 leg rounds. Probably should have won it before penalties.
