with the two favourites, pike and sherrif, kept apart in the draw things are set up nicely.if there is an ..easy..draw at this stage pike surely have it.sherrif,s game looks tough enough.

Would you not think the AUL would be stronger than the Cork AUL.after all Ballymun are previous winners and finalists.just a thought.

Noooo...cork aul is a lot stronger than the Roscommon premier....for ballinasloe it's comparable to Celtic playing in weak league and then entering champions league...it's a massive step up!

i think his point was, that of the two favourites(pike and sheriff),pike got the easier draw.
i am sure that everyone would agree(no disrespect to pearse) that overall, carew got the easier of the four 1/4 final draws.

Played them this season. Not great TBH. Mid - table in the Premier A is about where they are at. I'd expect Pike to win by two or three. Ballymun play a good counter attack game but rely heavily on their two up top. We got at their full backs very easy and they were prone to errors at the back by messing about with the ball.

A real game of 2 halves tonite with KUFC dominating the 1st half and should maybe have pulled away but didnt.out of the blocks straight away and got a pen for a foul in the 1st min and scored 1-0.A 2nd goal followed after 15 mins and we were in control but couldnt get a third to kill the game.Whatever their manager said at half time worked as they were a different team after the break. They brought on a tall lad up front and he made a big differnce and they pulled 1 back on about 57 mins and thru everything at us for the rest of the half but we held on!

Pike Rovers 2-1 Ballymun

A hard fought victory this afternoon for Pike Rovers, in a game that this Ballymun side will probably look back on with more than a hint of regret.

The home side started strongly, aggressively pressing Ballymun high up the pitch and forcing errors. John Tierney, playing in the centre of midfield, was making intelligent runs to the right flank and it was through this avenue that Pike opened the scoring. Tierney skinned the left back, before crossing into the area. Keith Hartnett, arriving late from midfield, met it with a volley and the ball seemed to float in slow motion into the Ballymun net. I'd say the Titanic went down faster than this goalkeeper did. Dreadful stuff.

Pike continued to dominate possession of the football and for a while it seemed that something of a mismatch was on the cards. Tierney and Hartnett were dominating the centre of the pitch, but despite that, it was notable how few chances the home side were creating. Both wide players were having poor games, and Ryan and Barry upfront were unable to take advantage of a defensive pairing who looked unsure in the extreme. Both centre backs gave away numerous needless free kicks around the area and were often troubled by simple long balls.

Towards the end of the half, Ballymun started to come into the contest. Their number 10 was playing a very intelligent game, nominally positioned behind the striker, but in reality drifting from flank to flank, creating overloads. Just before half time, he popped up on the right wing, where he delivered a low cross into the box, which was met by the no. 8. Pike centre back Conor Moloney fouled him and a penalty was awarded, and converted. 1-1. Moloney had already been booked and it's difficult to say why the referee chose not to dismiss the young Kilmallock native.

The second half began as a much more even contest, with Ballymun growing in confidence. That confidence was to be short lived however as they soon found themselves reduced to ten men, with one of their centre backs dismissed for a second yellow card after a foul on John Tierney. Soon after, Pike had their first clear cut chance of the game. A set piece was poorly cleared, and the ball found its way to Boris Hanrahan, who saw his powerful shot cleared off the line by the Ballymun left winger. Ballymun made a substitution and reorganised, with the number 10 now playing an equally clever role on the right flank, shuttling from this position to central areas to provide an out ball on the counter. This was useful, as predictably, the Dublin side were now starting to get penned in. Inevitably, the winner arrived. Sub Paul Doona, playing on the right wing, received the ball after a dreadful error in possession from Ballymun's substitute right back. He delivered an inch perfect cross for Alan Barry to head home. 2-1.

Ballymun responded by removing their ineffective no. 9 and putting the no. 10 upfront, and almost immediately he had a chance to level. A long clearance deceived Colm Enright. No. 10 got in behind, one-one-one with the keeper Neville, only to fluff his lines. What a chance.

Almost immediately Pike went down the other end and had a one-on-one of their own. Ballymun's left full was positionally suspect, as sub striker John Okoro had drifted right and found himself in acres. He couldn't finish. Sub Pa Moloney was predictably furious that he didn't square it across.

Ballymun threw another man up top but Pike killed the game well from that point on, with most of the action taking place in Ballymun's right corner.

On balance, it was a deserved victory for Pike today, but only just. Some inconsistent refereeing benefited them (Alan Barry was lucky not to incur two bookings too), and they will have to look very closely at the number of clear cut chances that they created, something which was also a problem for them last year (particularly in the home tie against a fairly ordinary Wayside Celtic side, who should have beaten them on the day). They'll be delighted with the win, and rightly so, but question marks remain over their ability to go all the way.
