View Full Version : Shay Given

thought harts positioning was terrible for that goal. standing in no mans land due to trying to clear the attacker out of his way. should of been a defender on him in fairness. zonal marking is an absoloute disaster.
shays main problem seems to be that city won't let him go to a rival club, which pretty much rules out anybody that would be interested in signing him

I was at the game yesterday and behind the goal when Hart conceded the goal. He got irritated with Westcarr (who wasn't doing anything wrong) and stepped forward to give him another shove when the ball came whizzing over his head. He's also a very quiet goalkeeper. Doesn't really communicate with his back 4. Other than that he had very little to do.

Interesting. I would have blamed the defenders - nobody got anywhere near the ball and allowed the attacker a clear run on the ball. Not much a goalkeeper can do in that situation except try and get in the way of the ball.

Arsenal rumoured to be making late bid for Shay......would be great news but doubt if Mancini will let it happen.

A few of you are asking about a possible Sven-Goran Eriksson swoop for Manchester City's second-choice keeper Shay Given but my understanding is there is no chance of the Republic of Ireland international joining Leicester, or anyone else today. City got left short between the sticks by an injury to Given last season when they had loaned Joe Hart out to Birmingham, and they are not going to run the risk of the same happening again this campaign. Given to stay, until the summer anyway.
hes stayin it seems

What happens if Given has to stay at City (as just reported on the BBC site) and remains number 2 and Westwood moves to Wigan today? Big decision for Trapatonni.

Given's number one. Ideally he'd be playing first team ball, but I don't think there's a decision to be made. Especially if he's not playing really, really poorly when called.

I'm not sure it's fair to say Arsenal have a GK crisis. Almunia will be on his way, Fabianski actually looks decent when he gets a run of form up - the fans are becoming quite appreciative of him - and the other Pole looks quality in the making.
Would Westwood get a game at Wigan? Al Habsi looks very good. Just an aside - was Al Habsi the guy who came on late at the RDS and who also played in Algeria's second and third games at the WC? I thought he looked more than decent and was a country mile ahead of the hapless clown who started against us at the RDS and let in a howler against Slovenia.

If he stayed where he was he'd have saved it. He lost his concentration over a nothing incident. City are big on zonal marking and if somebody puts in a perfect ball then your up the creek.

There are pros and cons to each system. The ideal system incorporates a certain amount of each.

I think he'll stick with Shay. During the week he was stressing the need for Robbie to find regular football but in the same breath claimed it was 'different for goalkeepers' (paraphrasing).
No, Al Habsi's an Oman international.
That guy put in a performance against Villa that was comparable to Shay in his prime. A string of unreal saves.

Steve@SkyBet: A late move from Cardiff to land Manchester City 'keeper Shay Given. The Republic of Ireland stopper is now even money favourite (from 33/1) to join Dave Jones' side after a number of large bets.

Lads......As much as I hate to suggest this as i am huge fan of Shay Given, now that the transfer window is closed and if Shay spends the majority of the remainder of the season on the bench (barring a Injury to Hart) ....should shays position as Ireland number 1 be reconsidered?? ( God I cant believe I have asked that, never thought I would or would have to )( I realise Noely posted a similar comment yday , But now that the windows closed , what do ppl think)

I'd stick with him for the Macedonia game, but if he isn't playing at the start of next season then it's time for a change
If we didnt have a good solid emerging keeper like Westwood then I would say no, but I think if Shay doesnt play much in the next few months, serious consideration will be needed. there is no way he can be as sharp as WW. If it happens i wonder will shay "walk away".
Shay HAS to move this summer, surely he will.

Shay could be Citys undisputed No.1 come next summer - does he still have to move?
Lets be sensible here, the opportunity to move has now gone until the summer, in the meantime Shay just needs to knuckle down, train hard and be ready and waiting to take the opportunity when it comes either through Harts poor form or injury.
If that doesnt happen then the time to re-evaluate the situation will be in May.

Do you really think that will happen though?? Shay hasnt really been given any chance so far. The only ray of light is that Hart is on a bad run of late and appears to have had another bad game tonight. If Citeh arent getting results due to inadequate defence then maybe Shay will finally be given a chance.
EDIT: Just saw first goal and you'd really expect your keeper to do alot better, just a long free kick and it more or less went the whole way in. Not commanding at all.

Its hard to tell but chances for 2nd choice keepers dont come around that often so its not that unusual that he hasnt featured much, coupled with the fact Im sure things like getting him cup tied might have been in City's mind if there was a chance he might be allowed to leave in January. As I said in the original post another few more games at this level of performance for Hart or indeed an injury and Shay has his opportunity.

Sloppy work by Hart last night. Timid and hesitant coming for a low ball across his 6 yard box. Led to a goal I think but memory is hazy - I'd had a few pints!

Definitely his fault, had a terrible game, confidence seems to be low. From the telegraph match report....
Manchester City now trail Manchester United by eight points: the title has all but slipped away.
On this evidence, it is doubtful they would deserve it anyway. Carlos Tevez got them off to the perfect start, but non-stop Birmingham pressure proved too much. Nikola Zigic equalised, and then Craig Gardner's penalty cancelled out Alexandar Kolarov's free-kick.
Micah Richards fell victim to his own bravery as he defended his area, while the less said about Joe Hart, the better. The goalkeeper's nerves were clearly contagious where his defenders were concerned.

Doesn't look like Mancini has any intention of dropping Hart:
"I am happy though. I will not change because Joe Hart is the best goalkeeper."
Mancini has also played down any suggestion that Hart could be dropped for City's home date with West Brom on Saturday.
Pressed on whether he would consider drafting the more experienced Shay Given back into the fold, Mancini simply replied: "No."

Yesterday's Mirror mentioned Wayne Hennessey is being looked at by City. Probably just a made up story, but I feel Shay's future is away from City. If no Premier team is interested he really needs to think of going abroad. I know it is stating the bleeding obvious, but his non movement in January remains the biggest disappointment of the transfer window.
Charlie Darwin

Hennessey was beaten at his near post today. I don't think he's half the goalkeeper Hart was at his age. Or Shay for that matter.
edit: Hart is actually younger than Hennessey

Arsenal will step up their attempts to finally end their long-running search for a goalkeeper by signing Manchester City shot-stopper Shay Given at the end of the season.
Republic of Ireland international Given has not featured at all for City in the Premier League this campaign and has grown tired on providing back-up to first-choice Joe Hart, who replaced Given between the sticks at the City of Manchester stadium at the beginning of this season.
And, given the outstanding form of the England No 1 so far, Given now knows that he has no future under City manager Roberto Mancini, leading the 34 year old to seek a move away from the club during last month’s transfer window.
Mancini, though, refused to sanction such a move, although he has told Given that come the summer he will be allowed to reignite his stalled career with another top-flight club, and Arsenal will need to pay £7 million to secure his services.

Really? I'd have thought Mancini's decision to stick with Hart despite a few bad blunders would let Given know he has no future under Mancini. If Hart had been outstanding so far, Given could still hope that he'd be dropped after a mistake or 3, but he doesn't even have that hope left.

If McCarthy is not available he is not available, he doest need you giving him stick in public
why does he have to play every single game. We need our sub keepers to get game time too. but this media darling is on a one man selfish crusade to break the caps record on his own.

So you reckon Coventry City #1 Kieren Westwood is more in need of game time than rarely-used Manchester City substitute Shay Given? Interesting.
