View Full Version : Shay Given

Look at Brad Friedel, hes 39. Shay should still be aiming for another 4-5 years at the top. I get the feeling we will be looking by at Shays career with a sense of unfulfillment.
Re Macedonia game, I think would probably stick with Shay but would like to see WW get the nod in the Nations cup games.

Given might stay at Man City. (http://www.click-manchester.com/sport/manchester-city/1211978-shay-given-rules-out-manchester-city-loan-move.html)
I hope he does realise he's nearly 35.

Given really needs to move soon, but maybe with VDS retiring (http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~2250966,00.html) at end of the season he is waiting for the Man Utd #1 jersey
Hypothetically, if he didn't get a move and plays as infrequently as he has been doing, would you play Westwood against Macedonia?
Out of interest how has Westwood been playing this season? (I haven't really been following him this season)

Isn't the main problem Man C don't want to sell to a Prem rival? Sounds like it's Celtic or Italy.

Won't make any odds though, far too few mistakes for my liking...
Surely Shay could be given the start in whatever cup run they may have and particularly after Harts error yday.

Rumours abound he is still looking for an Italy move, with Andrew Lonergan linked as his replacement if he leaves!!

Manchester City tell Shay Given he can leave once replacement is found: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/14/shay-given-manchester-city
Given's desire is to go out on loan and Mancini confirmed the club are looking at potential replacements, with Coventry City's Keiren Westwood, a former City reserve and now Given's understudy for the Republic of Ireland national team, among the options

Given now 5/4 to join Leicester on Skybet. It might happen as I would suggest very few teams if any in the Premiership will match his City wages. He might have to drop down a division if he wants to get playing time or move to Celtic if he wants to stay on the money he currently gets.

Could be an opening here for Shay to get back his No1 Jersey at City. Sounds like Hart is one howler away from being dropped. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3356488/Man-City-boss-Mancini-wary-of-his-dodgy-Hart.html

Can't see it myself. It's a rouse to give false hope to Given keeping him in situ until the end of the season, while firing a shot across Hart's bow. Surely if he was serious he would have given Shay a run out in the FA Cup?
Has Hart been poor this season for City, or only the past few games?
I said at the start of the season that you would have to feel sorry for Shay. The way he played for City last season there was no way he should have lost the jersey, but that the decision was probably right for City in the long term as they have a fantastic asset on their hands in Hart, who potentially has another 15 years at the top level.

Mancini said something again this morning about his worry of the goals conceded and the concentration levels (didn't mention Hart by name).. Might get Given a recall. Might also sway him from his comittment to leave (a bad thing). He should still get out of there in my opinion... Hard to think of an ideal destination in the EPL though...

Do you think it might be a ploy to keep hart on his toes and give false hope to given(the transfer window and what mancini has recently said)?that's what it smells like to me.
Unless of course its a way of dropping hart legitimately and reinstating given.

Reading between the lines it sounds like a stalling tactic all right to keep Given at City. Given can't get his game in a fairly meaningless FA cup tie so he has to get away from City.

i would suspect that was to stop him being cup tied. city have conceeded 7 in 3 games now and hart has been at fault for some of those. shay deserves his chance at this stage
Noelys Guitar

I agree he deserves his chance. Harte is still making some great stops but his decision making is not as good as it was a few weeks ago. It might take another 2/3 goals conceded this weekend for Mancini to actually drop Harte. Mind you apart from Kompany (who is excellent) I don't rate any of that City backline. The problem with Shay remaining at City is Mancini could just as likely buy another top keeper. He needs to move for constant first team football.

Shay Given certainly did nothing to deserve getting dropped, in fact he was one of City's top performers last season. Now that Hart is not playing as well Shay should be given a chance. That is only fair, surely...
This might be my Irish bias: but if Given was an England goalkeeper with over 100 caps and a faultless career, and Hart was an up and coming Irish keeper, do you think Given would have been dropped? I doubt it.

19/01/2011, 5:59 PM
That would call for a conspiracy. About the only thing in this matter that could have an influence on Mancini, would be Capello. They are both Italian, from a country where if something has a 10% probability, it becomes a fact in progress. The only thing that can disprove this fact in progress, is if Mancini plays Given.
SwanVsDalton
19/01/2011, 6:25 PM
I can't see him dropping Hart. Think Mancini holding on to Given is as much about threatening Hart, at a time his form has dipped, by having a more than capable replacement. Selling Given at this point would, if anything, make Hart more complacent.
Still it's up to Shay to agitate for the move. I suspect he's holding on to hope he'll displace Hart but, realistically, I can't see it happening. Mancini's has his number one in mind and even if Shay got a run of games, in all likelihood one mistake would see him dropped immediately (unlike the multiple chances Hart will be provided).

If City lose this match then Given is going to be in a difficult situation. Harte was partly at fault for the goal and has just used up his ninth life. Shay will have to make a Clash call ie should I stay or should I go and Mancini must now be seriously thinking recall for Given.

It took him forever to get down to push away a medium hit shot. Must have been watching a different game.
Here is just one report from the game. From the Telegraph of all places
Though it was not the sharpest effort Joe Hart, moving sluggishly across his goal, could do no more than palm away. Bent, lurking on Aleksandar Kolarov's shoulder, exploded forward, veins pumping ice as Villa Park screeched in expectation, earning himself 37,815 worshipers as he slid the ball in.

The Guardian has this to say:
Young breaks down the inside-left channel, makes it into the box, opens up his body and sidefoots powerfully for the bottom-right corner. Hart - who is making a lot of mistakes this season - palms out weakly, allowing Darren Bent to open his account with a simple-enough tap-in.
the differences in description certainly gave me a laugh!

Given can go, but not to another 'top' PL club apparently. As in probably the very few who can afford his wages.
Unless someone like Reina decides to leave?
And definitely worth a recall for Citeh.

Are there two conditionals, Man city won't allow him to go until they have a replacement and also won't allow a rival team to sign him?
Wouldn't the latter condition just apply to a loan move?

Defo was a mistake imo and they actually illustrated it very well. Showed a very similar save he made in the second half where he palmed the ball around the post as opposed to straght back out to the middle of the penalty area. He has had 3-4 errors in recent weeks that have directly/indirectly resulted in goals. Other keepers have been dropped for less, particularly when a keeper the calibre of Shay is on the bench. Still think Shay needs to move though as Mancini is not going to drop the darling of the English media.

Are those the first points that any of Harts mistakes have cost City though? That will be a factor in Mancinis thought process (rightly or wrongly). I doubt Hart will be dropped, its just a period he is going through. Shay will need to make a move in the next 10 days.

didn't cost any points, but the mistake in the first cup game against Leicester meant that game had to go to a replay

Hart was a little eccentric in two incidents in the first half today (did'nt see the second half)
He is young though.
I think its unfair that Mancini did not let Given play in the FA cup. Given should move if he gets a good offer anf if the Loads a money club let him go.

That's Robbie sorted, over to you Shay.
The solid backup. What a degrading (albeit lucrative) predicament he's gotten himself into at Citeh. I'll bet he's never empathised more with Steve Harper.
Only saw the goals on the news, but Hart didnt look great for their goal again, am I been over critical? But the robot that Hart was earlier on the year certainly seems to have disappeared.

Spurs making a bid for Given would seem like journo/8 pints2shorts/alcove epiphany stuff but I actually believe it. It makes perfect footballing sense for Arry and Spurs to bring in Given. Cudicini is well past his best and Gomes is a good keeper but I feel Given at his best can just shade him. Plus Redknapp has bought Gallas. Is trying to bring in Phil Neville today. He wants players with plenty of Premiership experience. This could go to the wire today.
