Yes but what I'm asking is if Lawrence was even registered. I mean if he's not been named in a squad, and is presumably not named in the 25, then I think he's available to move on again in January should that situation arise.

I don't see it happening so it's all theoretical, but as far as I understand he would be able to move on.

Players can be registered to three clubs; they may only play for two. Lawrence hasn't represented Stoke this season, so he'd be free to play for two more clubs.

Thanks Charlie, I stand corrected.

Really? I would have thought that restricting someone employment like that would be illegal?
I can't see the point anyway, why limit how many clubs you can play for in a season?

Colin Healy and Gareth Farrelly were prevented from lining out for Cork City a few years ago due to this rule and both had their appeals rejected at the time. The rule (FIFA Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players, Chapter III: Registration of Players, article 5.3) stated:

Players may be registered for a maximum of three clubs during the period from 1 July until 30 June of the following year. During this period, the player is only eligible to play in Official Matches for two clubs.

Healy had played for Livingston between March and August of 2006 before moving to Barnsley. He then moved to Cork City in February of 2007 but was restricted from actually playing for the club until July of 2007. Farrely had been with Bohemians, Leicester (although I don't think he ever played for them) and Blackpool within a similarly short period of time before signing for Cork around the same time as Healy.

There are further details here, although FIFA amended the rule after lobbying from the FAI in 2008: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_F.I.F.A._2

The rule now contains the following addition:

As an exception to this rule, a player moving between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons (i.e. start of the season in summer/autumn as opposed to winter/spring) may be eligible to play in official matches for a third club during the relevant season, provided he has fully complied with his contractual obligations towards his previous clubs. Equally, the provisions relating to the registration periods (article 6) as well as to the minimum length of a contract (article 18 paragraph 2) must be respected.

What all this means for Lawrence is, I think, that he'd be OK to move on again in January and play for a third club just so long as he hasn't appeared for Stoke before making a move now. And he hasn't, so I think he'd be fine. If Lawrence had appeared for Stoke this season, however, and then went on to play for Portsmouth, the aforementioned exception would not apply to him, unless, of course, the third club he moved to in January operated within a league beginning in either Winter or Spring. I think I have that right...

Actually, that article appears to suggest that it was Healy's loan-move to Bradford City whilst he was at Barnsley that ruled him out of playing for Cork. Is that correct?

Charlie Darwin
31/08/2010, 1:17 AM
The Livingstone part is irrelevant - he left them before the start of the season. So he had played with Barnsley, Bradford and was therefore unable to play when he joined Cork City.

The downside is of the transfer is that it may well mean that Whelan gets lesser opportunities in centre midfield for Stoke. Unless perhaps Wilson is played at centre half for Stoke.

It looks like Stoke, having been promoted and stayed up for 2 (or 3?) seasons, now think that they can start reinvesting their windfall rather than saving for a rainy day back in the Championship. I'm not sure of their financial situation but that'd make sense.

He's started ahead of Glen in a 4-4-2 for Stoke. Nothing of note yet. Walters playing up front too alongside Kenwyne Jones.
Stephen Ireland completes a triumvarate of Irish transfer window purchases involved tonight. However Reo Coker has been preferred to him. Dunney and Delap starting too.

Xavi would have been proud of that pass to Jones from deep in midfield, and Keano would have buried it. More of the same hopefully.

BBC matchtracker:

2012: New Stoke signing Marc Wilson cuts open the Villa defence like a surgeon's knife with a superb through ball for Kenwyne Jones, but the former Sunderland striker scuffs his shot as Friedel's right arm averts the danger. Encouraging for Stoke, Jones is looking a serious handful.

The most impressive so far was Delap beating his man down the wing.
HE is only meant to take throw ins isn't he? :P

Great that he's being played in his preferred position but not ideal that it's at the expense of Whelan. Really hope he has what it takes to make the step up to international level there.

Wilson subbed on 65 for other newcomer Jermaine Pennant. That's Stoke second substution.
Id say they could be described as tactical, I can't say I noticed much of Wilson either good or bad
the game seems to bypass the central midfield.

Glenn's brother hits the late late winner.
Is that the Stoke manager doing a lap of honour?

Wilson was strong in the first half, went a bit anonymous in the second. Don't think pennant made much of a difference though to be honest. I think on a positive, Wilson was far more offensive then expected, so it's not insane to think whelan might take whitehead's position. Wilson though looks far more interesing than Green/Andrews. I know Trap wont make changes before the russia/slovakia games, but i expect to see him introduced for Norway. Better be!!

Wilson did put in a great defense splitting pass to put Kenwin Jones through in the first half?
However I could not be sure was him at the time due to the double double dutch commentary on the blury stream.

I should mention, due my earlier reference to the Stoke manager doing a lap of honour, that Tony Pulis lost his mother - yet he attended the game. But obviously wanted to make a hasty exit from the proceedings.

Squad is named on Monday so it'll be interesting to see how many play at the weekend.

Of the Irish players starting this wkend in the premier league, there will be more left out of the squad - McCarthy, Ward, Foley, Wilson, Carr (retired i know), Delap than named in the squad - Dunne, Doyle, O'Shea (possibly), Kelly. 6 versus 4. Apologies for the terrible phrasing but I think it's an interesting point

rebelmusic
16/09/2010, 6:44 AM
He will name Foley so it's 5 v5 - Delap and Carr really are a moot point so in the end its 5 he selects and 3 he leaves out.

The simple point tho is Ward is a better option than Kilbane, and McCarthy/Wilson are all better options for a partner to Glenn Whelan. But Trap won't change without a friendly, no point hoping he will

Wilson and Whelan on the bench today. Walters (who according to the Sky commentators has been Stokes best player in recent games) is on the bench.

Walters has been poor so far in the first half. Looks out of his depth and will definetely be substituted. I hope Wilson or/and Whelan come on as Stoke are been outplayed by Parker and Noble in midfield.

Walters has just started the second half brilliantly and plays a great ball for the equaliser. Shut up Noely! Pulis has moved him out to the right wing and he looks like a different player (for a few mins). Taken off after 65 mins and not surprised. Wish he was the answer but for me Walters lacks the touch and timing of jump to step up if Doyle or Keane are injured.

Perhaps an option for us at right wing instead??

I think he is better as a wide player. Better running at players and running into the flight of balls to head rather than leading the line.

I don't think his running of the channels is particularly good. He's got all of the physical attributes to be a very good striker but I don't think he has the intelligence/positioning up top.

His best performances for Ipswich were at right midfield IMO.

Wilson starts, and notably whelan is not playing again.

we really need to be looking to playing those that are starting, i mean whelan has done well for us in the past but not recently. And if his club manager who is doing well with limited resources is favouring his irish counterpart, then surely Trap has to follow suit.

Great to see this guy getting regular starts for Stoke City. Was probably Stoke's best player yesterday. He is receiving great reviews on the fans forum:

http://oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Potters&action=display&thread=140513

This guy has to start in our midfield against Norway. Whelan has been terrible in the last few games for Ireland and is not starting for Stoke. And Green simply isn't a footballer

Scored his first premiership goal yesterday for Stoke in the 93rd min after coming on as a late sub which is good to see, doesn't seem to be much talk about him on here he seems to be playing a midfield role now rather than his original position at the back.
