It's an international date. You can't blame the FAI/Trap for arranging a game, it's a chance to look at some fringe players for the WCQ.

he needs these guys but they don't seem inclined to rally for him.Chickens to roost maybe.
Funny you see it that way. The Euros weakened Trappatoni in the dressing room, not to the point where he is facing a full scale player revolt, but certainly where he no longer has the respect of several players, some in the squad, others not selected. I have a vague notion that some of the players now crying off injured are looking at Trap as if he has 3-4 games left as manager, and are trying to avoid the collateral damage of being associated with him.

Yes, I meant for FIFA, because its not just Ireland who doesn't seem to get much out of this date as most of the friendlies follow the same paradigm. For Ireland, I do agree it could be a chance for some of the fringe players, but then again Trap rarely uses them anyway. I'm betting on either a 0-0 or a 1-0 (either way) borefest of a match.
I'll be really ****ed if the likes of Gibson, Hoolahan and Wilson play in the PL on the wkd. These are the lads who should be using these games to force their way in the squad and starting XI.

But why? Forget about how we as supporters view playing for Ireland. It would be a dream come true for most. But take the three players you just mentioned. Gibson is probably the only one who is guaranteed game time with his club. Hoolahan has a new manager and is fighting for his place, Wilson has seen Stoke sign a left full so he isn't guaranteed a game either.
All three of them have been fcuked around by Trap over the last year or so. Maybe in Wilson's case it was his own fault. So, why would any of them risk playing a friendly where they may get injured and then lose out completely at club level?
Also, look at the way Trap has operated over the last few years with friendlies. These guys may be called up, but there is absolutely no guarantee that they will get game time to stake any claim.
I'm not defending them, I'm just saying look at it objectively. Also, Gibson went off injured last week. He may be nearly fit, doesn't mean Everton would be willing to allow him risk more serious injury. Hoolahan has a virus. Should pass in a couple of days so he will more than likely be fit for the weekend.

Who gives a toss about these meaningless friendlies, if it really was about blooding new players then we'd be playing behind closed doors training matches against League 2 opposition and not countries like Oman. Money and greed are destroying football. Making any supporters pay any amount of money to watch this tripe is outrageous. There's no way these matches will be sold out, and for good reason.

Disgraceful.

I'm not Canadian, I don't care about the NHL, though you are dead wrong to think for a moment that there will be a lockout. Canada only winning one gold medal was hilarious, I had money one the Americans winning the semi-final of the women's football so you can imagine my reaction when Canada lost! Never met a country so full of whiners and a people with such an inferiority complex for the United States.

Wilson comes across as a right ******* in all truth, feigns injury for practically every call then whines when not part of the Euro 2012. The lads one of the fittest players out there as well playing over 40 games in both the last 2 seasons, its not as if he's minding himself from recurring injuries or anything.

And it'll annoy the hell out of me hearing barstoolers moan about why he's not in the squad.

True he had his chance and he messed it up. As much as I think Stephen Ward is an absolute liability its even more damaging to allow fairly average players such as Wilson to start dictating what matches they want to play in.
DannyInvincible
19/08/2012, 10:38 AM
Hold on. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Wilson hasn't been dictating what matches he's wanted to play in, nor has there been any suggestion that he'd do such a thing. As if Trap would let him anyway...

As if Trap would let him anyway...Reminds me a bit too much of 'The Boy who Cried Wolf'. He's, as stated earlier, one of the least injury prone players in the Premiership based on his Stoke appearances yet around Ireland friendlies he turns into Darren Anderton.

I meant dictating as in feigning injuries when he can't be bothered rather than explicitly telling trap as such.

I proved this theory wrong in another thread but you didn't bother replying to it. Again you claim he feigned injury to miss the squad. But on that point alone you are wrong. He had a virus. Now it's not my place to say whether or not he was sick, but anytime I've had a virus I have recovered within 3 or 4 days.

I don't get this guy at all takes a brave decision which comes with a lot of flack up here to play for his country and he was in the Irish News a few months back expressing disappointment at being left out of squads but saying that he was committed to Ireland and he would patiently wait for his chance but yet he isn't available for friendlies again. Is he just biding his time until Trap leaves or something?

Just to keep things in perspective, I think magicman's post from another thread is worth re-posting here: http://foot.ie/threads/152510-Should-McCarthy-Walters-Wilson-and-Gibson-be-given-a-future-callup-or-ignored?p=1618307&viewfull=1#post1618307
I just went back through a bit and this is the info I could find.
Wasn't in the Euro's Squad
Wasn't in the Czech Squad
Wasn't in the Estonian Squad
Wasn't in the Andorra/ Armenia Squad
Was named in the original 32 man squad for Russia/ Slovakia but didn't make the cut.
Was in the Croatia squad. Travelled over, Irish docs declared him unfit and was sent home
He did miss the Carling Cup games against Scotland & Northern Ireland(that's one pull out)
He was in the Macedonia/Uruguay squad but didn't play. Can't find any mention of him pulling out or being replaced. Just seems he didn't play.
Was in the Carling Cup Squad v Wales and played.

Again, the specter of that unapologetic mystery fringe player looms, has to be Andy Reid?
'for he had mixed Wilson up with another slightly fringe player who has, it seems, yet to come back on bended knee.'
Though you wouldn't refer to Andy as 'slightly'.

Yeah it could be, but Stokes' crime was withdrawing from the Carling cup squad and Ireland hasn't featured, therefore can't have breached Trap's law.

Some many "conflicts" these days that it is hard to keep track. Stokes announced he was tired and didn't want to be considered for the games with the North and Scotland. Wilson, Walters and McCarthy were awol for those games.

That leaves us with opportunity and out of all those, only Andy had the opportunity.
There is a conspiracy of silence around the naming of Andy as the unapologetic curfew breaking rascal.
It could be that Andy who might have gone through his youth being blamed for everything, didn't feel like apologising because he wasn't the ringleader, blamed in the wrong yet again. Other players who had cajoled Andy (against his will) to play yet another tune, got wind of Trap approaching, managed to make an exit out the side door, leaving Andy holding the banjo to face the music. Andy was the patsy and the other players kept mum to protect their own ásses. Andy didn't snitch on his mates even though they left him high and dry,
therefore Liam Brady praising Andy as a fine fellow of integrity.
paul_oshea
04/09/2012, 12:56 PM
I wouldn't say snitching, more being made an example of.
And happily for Trap Reid was the kinda player he didn't want in his team anyway, one that could play ball, but was less of a defending player.
Or in this case an offending player ;)
So it was a double victory for Trap.

So, does this indicate it is a grudge with Reid (the most likely culprit for betrayal of the group), after all?
Interesting also that the IFA made queries with Stoke with regard to the possibility of Wilson returning to their fold.

Andy was the fall guy for the Mainz after-curfew session.
Seeing as Trap was ready to put him on as a sub against Montenegro, it appeared that the discipline breach was not a live issue at that time, probably it became an issue after that game and Andy was supposed to offer profuse apologies by the time they met up for the Cyprus game, or maybe some other new discipline issue emerged then. At that Cyprus game, Andy was pictured on the bench like a beached whale with a face longer than a sourpuss walrus. He had refused to apologise. After that game, Andy was not called up again, when no matter what people may think about Andy and Trap's system, he was definitely good enough for a squad number.
Trap let it spill out when he got his wires mixed up re Wilson, but if it wasn't Wilson then it had to be somebody else.

But didn't you more or less accuse him of pulling out of squads for no reason on an imaginary five or six occasions and showing a serious lack of commitment before knowing the full facts (or seemingly even the bare facts already made public)? The guy is clearly committed to the cause and had valid reasons for any withdrawal over which you were not merely suspicious, but unfairly accusatory.

I didn't see a single reason in that whole atricle that throws up what I would state are even passable excuses for any of his absences. His girlfriend was going to be on her own going into hospital so he couldn't go to the Euros? Unless she was getting open heart surgery then that's a fairly lame excuse. Either way she needs to get some friends.
He played 10 games for Stoke at the end of the season but couldn't even show up for an Ireland squad after a 3 month rest?
He's no Kevin Kilbane in the commitment league that's for sure. More so somewhere between Stephen Ireland and Anthony Stokes.
On the plus side maybe this will mean Stephen Ward won't get onto the pitch for the next few couple of games.
We can only hope.

He was selected to be the stand-by, that was not the same as 'going to the Euros'.
He said “if I’d been called up for the Euros I’d have been there, I just would have had some tough decisions to make.”
