A rare start these times for Wilson against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup q/final. Walters also starts with Whelan on the bench. No Westwood in the Wednesday squad.

I conclude that already being chucked out in the 1/4 final, assisted you with that certainty.

Idle speculation on tinternet of a possible switch to Aston Villa (no official sources, just speculation). Similiarly linked with Sunderland and Bournemouth earlier in the window but again, no concrete sources, just speculation.
Does he need a move to cement his place in France or does his versatility guarantee him a spot?

He's guaranteed a squad place I reckon.

I didn't realise Shawcross got injured on Saturday before Leicester ran riot. Wilson came on after a half hour to replace him. Shawcross is out for up to a month so hopefully Wilson gets a bit more game time.

That's a big blow for him, he's unlikely to see much or any game time when he returns unless there's a few injuries at Stoke. Not ideal at all. Hopefully he'll recover well enough to make the squad though, his versatility could still be important.

Wilson is on track to return to training next month: http://www.donegalnow.com/sport/ireland-defender-marc-wilson-will-do-whatever-it-takes-to-get-fit-for-euros/80934
Republic of Ireland defender Marc Wilson has enlisted the help of a strength and conditioning specialist in his bid to be fit in time for the European Championships in June.
The 28 year old Antrim man faces a race against time to be fit for Martin O’Neill’s squad for France after sustaining medial ligament damage to his knee in Stoke City’s FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace at the end of January.
His recovery is currently on schedule for a return to full training next month but, with time running out to get game time with Mark Hughes’ side before the end of the league season, he is open to the option of going out on an emergency loan to get back to match sharpness.
“I’ll do whatever it takes to get to the Euros,” he told Donegalnow.com yesterday. “When I return to full training I’ll try and get back with the Under 21s to get some games under my belt but if I have to got out on loan to get game time I will.
“The rehab’s been going really well, all being well I’ll be back training in full training in three weeks time.
“All I can work on at at the moment is my strength and conditioning and my personal trainer Matt Nuttall (pictured) has been a great help in that regard with my upper body work.”

Can players go out on emergency loan at the end of a season, by the way? Wilson says it's something he'd consider, but is it actually possible? Not quite sure what the loan rules are myself; loans aren't strictly confined to the regular transfer window periods, but there are some limitations, aren't there?

It closes on Thursday. Outside of that I think only goalkeepers can move in an emergency.

If he is fit for the Euros but hasn't played for Stoke, do you think he'll still make the squad? I'd say 50/50.
I think O'Neill is loyal but not to a fault
TheOneWhoKnocks
06/05/2016, 4:51 PM
He'd go ahead of Alex Pearce, surely?
Someone that wasn't getting in match day squads at Derby and has started a sum total of one league game for one of the weakest squads in the division. It would be a joke if he went.

You'd imagine Duffy and McShane are both ahead of him, but he does seem to keep making squads.
Stuttgart88
07/05/2016, 10:24 AM
I think McShane played himself out of contention in the Slovakia game. I'd be surprised if Duffy doesn't get the last CB spot. Maybe it's all closer than I'm imagining.
DeLorean
07/05/2016, 10:51 AM
Agreed. I certainly don't think 'Wilson or Pearce?' is a predicament running through O'Neill's mind. Pearce can't possibly be in the running barring injuries to more than just Wilson.

That's not exactly the same as Hogan "playing down talk of representing Ireland". He's just said it's not something he's thinking about right now as he's got his club career to focus on first. From the quote I read, I interpreted it that journalists were trying to get in touch with him to ask (or did he mean the FAI?), but I'm sure if an offer of a place was made he'd have a more serious think about it then. We'll see. Would Keane go to watch a player who has no interest in playing for us?

Only saw afterwards that JoeD had broken the news an hour earlier on the Holland/Belarus thread, so I didn't deserve any thanks anyway. :)
No idea if Wilson pushed himself too hard but seems a possibility I suppose. I think his lack of game time would have been a serious issue anyway, especially for a defender. One little showing of rustiness could have been fatal. Bad luck for him all the same, hopefully he's can get a decent pre-season behind him before the WCQ's.
[Duffy, Clark, Keogh & O'Shea] Along with Coleman, Christie, Ward, Brady. That will surely be the list of defenders.
Seems very straight forward now alright, defenders-wise. Two reasonably decent options for every position there. That said, as things stand, six of those eight defenders will be playing Championship football next season, possibly even seven with O'Shea being out of favour at Sunderland.

Unlucky for Wilson, but no surprise. He must have felt his chances of making it were fairly slim as, even if he was fit, he's still had no game-time whatsoever.
Looks like Duffy is a cert to make the cut now.
Just happened to come across this interview with Wilson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K5pI0Bqvao
I'd never heard him speak before and expected an Antrim/Armagh accent, but it's a weird mesh of all sorts. Bits of an English accent and some Dublin in there too, oddly. I can't imagine that was his accent when he first joined Manchester United in 2001. He would have been around 13 or so then though, if I'm not mistaken, and presumably moved to Manchester at the time, so maybe that explains the development of the peculiar accent.

Good question. Might not necessarily be centre half that he's signed for. He could slot into either centre half spot, left back or defensive midfield. In which case (on the basis of team against United), he's facing Simon Francis, Steve Cook, Charlie Daniels and Andrew Surman, respectively. All around a similar level? I'd guess he's signing him as a centre half. I was impressed with Daniels last season at left back and they've signed Cook and also have Arter (and O'Kane) for centre midfield. Francis is captain, though, and Cook managed a few goals last season.
