He was but that's just a camp. As far as I know, all the players there still train and play with their clubs. I don't think they even play games. And Shawcross wouldn't have been there anyway.

Wilson was never at Manchester United - he went straight from Lisburn to Portsmouth. Somebody on wikipedia has a lot to answer for.

He was at utd from age of 14-16, he was over in Manchester for weeks at a time. Utd let him go because of his lack of height at that age!! Joined Portsmouth at 16.

Shawcross was Stoke's record signing, he cost us £1m if I remember right. Bargain at that price though

Sent off for a professional foul in the box. Sounds like he didn't have much of a choice as it was a nailed-on goal.

I think if it's a nailed on goal it is best to let them have the goal rather than get sent off.
Was the same thing at Everton today, keeper sent off, but to be fair I think the striker
played to get the keeper sent off, looked like he could have scored but instead chose to go
down and get a penalty and the keeper sent off.
Didn't see the Villa game myself though, Whelan also sent off.

I was expecting calamitous stuff from both Whelan and Wilson but watching the highlights I thought both of Whelan's yellows were a bit harsh and Wilson's was just one of those things, an attempted tackle on a forward about to shoot. The forward was happy to go down.

First thoughts are it's a step down for Wilson and I don't he would want to go and the club would not be keen to sell as the article suggests.

So I will be surprised it it happens.

Wilson conceded a penalty after a dive from Sterling (those foreigners again). Lapse in concentration from Wilson led to Sterling going through but Wilson recovered well. Still a bit worrying how much things like that have been creeping into his game in the last few months.

It was a dive he just ran into Wilsons his leg, I think the ref is a scouser.
But then Wilson has go to anticipate such cheats.

Yeah, he was very lacksadaisical but it was in no way a penalty.

Wilson having a shocker, was responsible for their first goal with a mistake, and gave the ball to Sterling before the penalty. Was a definite dive though. Cheating little scumbag's going on my list of enemies!

Tried his hardest not to finish, but it squirmed under the keeper. Good touch to create the space for the shot though

Yea not exactly the kind of goal that makes goal of the month really.
Still he be glad to double his goal scoring tally this season.

That was the second I think - first was the deflection off Shawcross from 35 yards. Even the second one, it was a bad header from Wilson but the keeper had it covered until Shawcross knocked it around him. Wilson was awful though.

Yeah, the second, you're right.

It was Butland's first start for Stoke, so a lack of communication is understandable, albeit incredibly annoying!

I thought Butland did quite well to be honest. If he didn't scream that the ball for the second goal was his, fair enough, he'll chalk it up to experience, but I have no idea what Shawcross was thinking.

I reckon he thought he could get there, it comes on very quickly, and he does get a touch to it, although not enough to get it clear. To be honest, I doubt he was expecting Wilson to hoole things so badly, although if you want to be a top defender, you always have to anticipate things like that.

I don't know, looks a little bland, and I've lived in the midlands of England before, and didn't care for it much:

"Put his body on the line for his team throughout, with a stunning block to deny Zabaleta the best of the bunch. Dealt with Negredo and Dzeko with relative ease." 3.5

Assuming that Coleman and Ward are fit and play RB and LB respectively and Dunne returns to QPR, I wonder if Wilson will get the nod at CB again alongside O'Shea? Or will Wilson and/or O'Shea shift to the full-back positions opening up an opportunity for Clark, Delaney, Pearce or Keogh?

There are so many players there that can play CB or FB. It will be interesting to get a better idea of who plays CB and who plays FB as we approach Autumn.

O'Neill could even move Coleman into RM opposite McGeady, McClean, Pilko or Brady. Coleman's as much of a goal threat than any of them. It would be remiss to forget how good he was in that position for Everton.

I was terrified opening this thread because I thought it would be a serious injury. Glad it's just a good report card!

edit: on Wilson at CB, I think he'll get another shot provided Ward is fit to play

They lost 3-0 to Chelsea last week. Even if you take that out they still don't have three clean sheets in a row.

Mark Hughes wants Marc Wilson & Jon Walters signed up to long-term contracts at Stoke.

http://www.teamtalk.com/news/2483/9914566/Hughes-keen-to-keep-Walters-and-Wilson

Walters also revealed he is feeling fit and free of injury after a summer break which helped him recover from a niggling knee injury.

"It was probably a difficult season last year with my knee which has been a bit sore throughout the whole time," said Walters.

"If I had taken a break it would have gone but I didn't, I left it until the summer.

"It was a bit of a tendon thing so it was a case of loading it up every week to play games - and sometimes two games every week with training, so having that four-week break after the internationals has settled it right down.

Amazing that he was starting ahead of Shane Long when he wasn't near fully match fit. Imagine that. A 32 year old in his first competitive start and a crocked 31 year old start up front against Scotland in Dublin. How could it have went wrong?

Hopefully that is one thing that won't happen again. Starting players (McGeady, Walters) when they clearly aren't fully fit.

Charlie Darwin

I don't blame Walters. I think it's up to the manager at the end of the day. I'm particularly annoyed because when the season started he was playing with niggling injuries and at season's end he was still playing with niggling injuries. I think it was noticeable that when he played for Ireland he was not fully fit, and to make matters worse he was left on for 90 minutes at the end of every game.

Would have been a good result apart form the Coutinho goal, he had a shot earlier and it was so far off target it was unbelievable.
Didn't seem to knock his confidence though, the next shot was as good as the previous one was bad.

Great to see Wilson get a decent amount of game time on Saturday, and again last night. He came on after nine minutes against Watford after Cameron got injured, just a pity his return coincided with such a poor result for them. He tucked away his penalty (https://youtu.be/OUBr50m7zeY?t=3m39s) well last night too.

Whelan (assist), Walters (goal) and Wilson (penalty)! Productive night for the three W's. Probably just as well for Stoke that they stuck with Butland for the League Cup also seeing as saving penalties isn't Given's forté!
