Because they're both from the north east, and as wilson plays for the FAI All Ireland team and Evans plays for the IFA provincial team it is obvious that they are going to be compared.

I would agree Evans is going to be a great player.

Shouldn't that be 2/3rd provincial team if we're going down that road again? ;)

You never know, maybe he'll decide he wants to play for the north under Nigel Worthington and turn his back on playing the the mediocrity of the Republic side.

Yeah sports fans. The same way people always compare Henry Sheflin and Eoin Kelly.

Maybe you dont know who those people are but some people of a certain mindset dont want to know who they are

According to the back page of one of the rags today, our good friends up north are none too impressed about this and are trying to argue that as he has already played for the north he is not eligible for us etc etc.

Would they ever................

Not being a Hurling fan, I am only vaguely aware of Shefflin and Kelly. Therefore, I have no idea whether Hurling fans compare and contrast the two. Neither have I any idea why that should be relevant to this thread.

But as a football fan, I strongly suspect your reason for comparing Evans with Wilson derives from your political outlook, which seems to colour your views on anything to do with football and "the IFA provincial team", as you insist on insultingly terming it.

It is the IFA, in the dubious shape of Kennedy, who are squealing again.

There will be no debate on Footie because those visitors from the OWC to this site have in variable degrees accepted (some with extreme difficulty finally overcoming a stuck mindset) that current FIFA regulations unreservedly recognise that NI born have a birthright to Irish citizenship and that fact alone fulfills 100% of the criteria for eligibility to the Republic under FIFA article 15.

Also, lets not forget that Marc Wilson has been tied to the Republic since his 21st birthday last August.

"he may, up to his
21st birthday, and only once,
request to change the
Association for which he is
eligible to play international
matches to the Association of
another country of which he
holds nationality"

In general,
English born Alex Bruce can successfully apply to FIFA for registration to the Republic based on his only connection to the Republic is that his mother is born in NI. It is beyond me how anybody other than a monkey in a suit can think that a lad like Wilson, who is actually born in the 6 counties, has less right to declare for the Republic than Alex Bruce.
Apparently there is no limit to the IFA's inherent stupidity.

That would be the voices inside your head screaming again.
KK made a favourable comparison with Evans, hoping Wilson would turn out to be as good for us as Johnny is for NI.

It was back page of the 'Irish' Star. Was gonna post it but they've no website so there was no link. Nothing story, simply the IFA talking sh1te again....

I don't think the 21st birthday is relevant here though, Kennedy was just regurgitating the standard line about him being ineligible to play for us under any circumstances, he wasn't trying to get the player himself to voluntarily switch alleigance.

Absolutely correct Geysir.

It's rather embarassing that Raymond Kennedy (and several others), cannot quite grasp this.

The irredentist Citizenship laws of the Irish Republic, coupled with FIFA Statute 15 (1), are all that is relevant.

take it outside boys, Northern Ireland VS Spain at Windsor Park has little or nothing to do with Marc Wilson's progress at Portsmouth.
Don't have a problem with a discussion of the game, but it can lead down the same old roads.

IFA STATEMENT: MARC WILSON

09/01/2009
Over the last period of time, representatives from the Irish Football Association have been looking into the issue of Marc Wilson (current Portsmouth player) playing for the Republic of Ireland.

The Association can confirm that the player qualifies through his Grandparent and he has signalled his wish to play for the Republic of Ireland International team.
As far as the Association is concerned, this specific case is now closed.

So the fact he is an Irish citizen born and bred in Ireland has nothing to do with it.

These people really are stupid!!

Played a solid match, playing in a holding role in front of the back four in a formation not dissimilar to ours alongside Kabul (yikes!).

On the basis of this performance, he could be an option for us at some stage as one of the central midfielders.

On a side note, what do people make of Home Farm's link up with Portsmouth?

Depends on how much Home Farm are getting. To be honest im not a fan of English clubs taking our players at such a young age. If only we could ban players from playing there until they are 18/21 and develop them ourselves

All I will say in response is that the money isn't really in Ireland for a top-tier pro game.

Why not let kids go over to the UK if it means they'll have a better shot at the big time (better coaching, facilities, wages, etc).

In addition, I think kids that go over at a young age have the benefit of being an "academy" player, and thus getting more chances at breaking through than a "foreign" youngster (although maybe this isn't true anymore).

Seems he last played the full 90 minutes in Pompey's first two games of 2009 (FA Cup 3rd Round and Replay versus Bristol City), followed by a two minute appearance as substitute in their following League game vs Spurs (18/01/09), but has failed to feature in the matchday 18 since:

He had a dose of the mumps, and is only just back to full health, according to the Boro VS Pompey preview here - http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/premier-league-team-news-1672810.html

Richard Hughes is available after a hamstring injury and Marc Wilson (mumps) has recovered, and both could be involved at some stage.

Thanks for that Tets.

That certainly explains his absences of late. He had been making good progress up until Adams' sacking. Hopefully he can establish himself in the Portsmouth side between now and the end of the season.
He is certainly an exciting prospect for us - a technically accomplished, composed CB. In my opinion, he will form along with O'Dea our future central defence.

There is no "cure" for mumps, just a vaccine to prevent catching it. It is unusual, but hardly unknown, for unvaccinated adults to get it (you normally get it as a kid)
That said, it usually passes within a week or so, with no further effects, so doctors usually just treat the symptoms (fever, headache etc) til the patient is better.
Talking of "symptoms", I happen to know about this from a holiday in Italy with some student mates way back. One of the guys took ill with a swollen neck and fever etc, so we took him to a hospital in Turin.
None of the available Doctors spoke English and none of us Italian. Eventually they found a young female Doctor who spoke French, so I was roped in to translate between her and my mate.
We were managing rightly until she came to one question about symptoms, where I didn't know the correct French vocabulary.
Eventually she kinda "mimed" it and I realised she was asking if his balls were swollen! :D
I could hardly ask my mate for laughing, with the effect made worse by the look of panic on his face when he realised!
It all became too much when I asked him if he wanted either of us to look for him...;)

Anyhow, I've since learned that she was checking for "Orchitis" - one of the symptoms of Mumps in adults...

P.S. There is no cure for Measles, either, just a vaccination. Swollen testicles aside(!), it is potentially much more serious than Mumps, occasionally being fatal.

I've seen him play at right back and in central midfield for Portsmouth and he looked good in both positions.

Perhaps in his youth team days he was a centre-half, and maybe that's his natural position, but he looked like centre-mid or full-back could be his natural positions.

Looks a good versatile, technical player.

Perhaps a Portsmouth relegation would be the best for his career if they drop some of the older players and start a bit of a rebuild.
