Cork equalise on the night through Dooley. 1-1 in Turners Cross. 3-1 on aggregate. That should relieve the nerves.

Geysir goes into hiding...

1-0 Rovers

Rovers are much the better team. There is no pace in that Icelandic side, a very poor side.

Derry heading for double digits.

First time since Zimbru?

Caufield and his arrogance now his negative side taking over.

If they go through its still the old porous defence...

Clear hand ball in front of the linesman for their second. Don't know how it wasn't given. Need to up it considerably in the second half.

9-2 Midtylland.

Was Zimbru the last double digit aggregate defeat?

Sorry, the answer is of course Derry.

Derry won't lose 6-1 again anyway.

Except they might. 4-1 Now. 10-2 aggregate

Was Zimbru the last double digit aggregate defeat?
Yeah, that was my guess a bit earlier on the thread alright.

I know Midtylland are good, but this is surprisingly wojus from Derry

Do Shamrock Rovers have a big white sticker on the back of their shirts tonight?

Do Shamrock Rovers have a big white sticker on the back of their shirts tonight?

They have two big white stickers. One big square for the numbers and another white strip across the top of that for the players' names.

Edit: Actually, on closer look, I think it's just the one big white sticker. The white hoop against the green underneath the semi-transparent sticker made it look like Rovers had the players' names on a separate sticker. Optical illusion. :o

Last LoI player to score a hat-trick in Europe?

Are you going back to the days of big wins v Vetra, Rhyl, Aberystwyth and Glentoran?

Against Aberystwyth?

DannyInvincible

Strong finish from Rovers as Stjarnan chase goals and leave space at the back.

Against Aberystwyth?

I presume so.

How is that not a red card??

ger121
06/07/2017, 8:52 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong but LOI teams won a total of 5 games last year. 4 wins so far. Be nice now if one of the sides went on a run.

DannyInvincible
06/07/2017, 8:54 PM
How is that not a red card??

Shocking two-footed tackle with studs on show. Should have been a straight red.

Anyway, both Cork and Rovers through. A good night for the league considering there was no chance of Derry progressing anyway, although a 10-2 loss on aggregate is still embarrassing. Shiels' open game-plan was madness against opposition like Midtjylland.

See corks backbone now.

I had forgotten the negative side to foot.ie & LoI in Europe

Good win for rovers, but thought they were overly cautious after they got the goal and it could have cost them. They were clearly a better team in the first half. Passing was crisp, movent was direct and they could have scored more. In the 2nd half though they were clearly under instruction not attack too much but they didn't know how to execute it. When they had possession, players didn't know how to play. movement was poor and disjointed and it made a bad spectacle. They had quite a few sloppy moments and scares at the back but a win is a win. They pressured stjarnan for a few mins near the end and could have scored a couple more.

White Horse
06/07/2017, 9:04 PM
Rovers will only get away with that sloppiness against poor sides, but will need to up their game significantly in the next round.

Still it is the result that counts and they will know better than anyone that they will need to improve.

So Rovers v Mlada Boleslav next, and Cork against Larnaka, who are currently losing in Gibraltar, though they won 5-0 last week.

Tough one for Rovers; we've a very poor record v Czech teams. I'm not convinced by Cork in Europe yet, but Larnaka's not a bad second round draw.

I was over in Mlada Boleslav a few yrs ago and caught a match against Plzen. Plzen won it 3-1 but they were qualifying for CL group stages about that time. Mlada Boleslav will be a level ahead of Rovers so they have their work cut out. Rovers will need to have a v good day and I hope Mlada Boleslav have a bad day. Not impossible though.

Had to work for that tonight. First half wasn't great, their second was just ridiculous really, the while ground saw it was hand ball and the linesman was only yards away. Crucial goal right at the start of the second half and they didn't get many chances. God we are seriously going to miss Maguire when he's gone. Our record goal scorer in Europe now. Tougher tie ahead against Larnaka. Congrats rovers too, 4 wins out of 6 is good for the league.
