I doubt Koeman will be too happy if McCarthy breaks his leg against Moldova!
Koeman should be OK, at least untill Xmas, they have some easier fixtures coming up (bar Arsenal) which should help.

Kenwright is normally pretty patient but it might depend how much influence the new owners have. I'd say he'll get some time alright though, there wouldn't exactly be a queue of top managers to replace him straight away.

Great to see McCarthy so eager to be involved, despite annoying Koeman.

'Classy Arter proves he is no dummy': https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/irish-sport/classy-arter-proves-that-hes-no-dummy-p3cmrn8vh

That article is behind a pay-wall, but Balls.ie have quoted some of what Arter had to say on adjusting to our style of play and having had a chat with O'Neill after the Georgia game here: https://www.balls.ie/football/harry-arter-martin-oneill-375722

It was before the Moldova game that I spoke to the manager and we had an honest chat. It was great for him to come and see me. I told him that if I got the opportunity again I was not going to let it pass. I told him I would do everything I could to make sure I repaid him for giving me another chance.

...

I am trying to adapt to a side which I am not used to playing with. I have been at Bournemouth for eight years now and am used to a certain style of play. You get into habits when you play football. I take up positions or I expect players to be in positions that I know Bournemouth would be in, but I have realised that that is not going to be the case here. I had a good chat with the manager and Roy [Keane] about wanting to change that and the determination to make sure I can be a success here and affect the game.

I love that "preparing". Moyes "Can someone draft up a letter to Bournemouth saying we'll give them £15 million for Arter". Minion: "Ok, I'll prepare it".

He's been on the bench a few times of late so perhaps time to move on.

Harry Harry were for Arter thou!!

Art thou at West Ham or wilt thou remain at Bournemouth?

West Ham art a point above Bournemouth so it would be a move up the table

Arter or Roy Keane ? Give me Arter any day of the week. Has MON tried to sort this fracas out?

Paddy Garcia
03/09/2018, 7:08 PM
With the Rice debacle this is the time that MON should be building resilience and team spirit across the rest of the team and particularly the midfield - not losing yet another of our best midfielders.

Hot on the heals of Rice , this is a poor indictment of the management teams current effectiveness & leadership.

elroy
03/09/2018, 8:02 PM
Based on knowledge we have so far, it seems incredibly petty no??

What would it have taken to justify this stance from Arter and possibly Rice? Did Keane go with the ‘they are not Irish’ in this argument. If so, then Keane should go but I’d be amazed if it went that way/that far.

I want to lose both. Harry Arter is not commited 100% to us and Keane is a negitive influence

Might be just me, but the extent to which a player being 100% committed matters to me, is inversely proportional to how good a player they are and how much they offer the squad.

shakermaker1982
04/09/2018, 6:16 PM
It’s almost as if the sports papers need to blow something up just to generate some interest around the national side. That’s how low we have fallen. We cannot generate interest around the stuff we do on the field so let’s make out Keane is going full on bad cop on these poor innocent delicate flowers.

Players have disagreeements with fellow team mates and coaches all the time. So long as Keane hasn’t tried to strangle him what is the big deal? If Arter is prepared to throw away his international career over an argument then more fool him. Even if he cannot stand Keane you’d think he would want to prove him wrong by showing what he can do on the pitch.

Arter's performances say otherwise

Well lets be fair. He was excellent against Wales away and Austria away. Woeful against Denmark at home and really really poor against Georgia away.
I would prefer to have him if he was committed, but not under these circumstances

And I could say that I'd prefer to have an assistant manager who puts his country before his own personal interests (and the same for Mick too btw).

However better to hold back on the value judgments unless you have your own hotline .......................

I wonder what damage the reaction to Paul Merson saying he should be in the England squad did to Arter's feelings about playing for Ireland?

Not sure why the hatred for Arter on here. Would have been much easier for him to kick back and rest up during international breaks instead of turning out for us. He's an excellent player when fit, and we could really use him.

He is a fine player when fit. That Glen Whelan gets in to the squad ahead of him is only down to his injury woes. Head to head in a green shirt, Arter has performed as well as if not better than Jeff Hendrick.

To a certain extent that is true. Had a tough run with injuries and did not have a chance to build up momentum and make the position his own. Unfortunate, but that is football.
On the other hand he was more effective in a few appearances than Whelan ever was for us.
Arter's worst moments for Ireland (which were few) were better than Hendrick's who continues to go from average to poor game in and game out.

Played well once when in with a shout of the Euro16 squad, from memory. Never looked bothered since or before and really played poorly in a few too. The guy isnt interested, and quite possibly a secret Lion too.

Over the top comment.
"The guy isn't interested and quite possibly a secret Lion?"
He told you that, did he?
So to put things in perspective, Harry Arter went to the trouble of applying for a passport and getting his paperwork in order and telling all his family that he would be playing for Ireland. He then pulled on the green shirt 15 times, and he wasn't interested?
Do you have that amount of time to waste in your life?
Not very logical is it?

Now now mark12345, cool yourself down man, keep it within posting guidelines, we have standards around here in such matters.

Plenty smoke around the Harry is at heart a Lion fire too, and RK thought so as well.

My sense is that Harry is happy enough to play for us as long as he’s starting. I suspect he expected he’d walk into our starting XI and between one thing and another that hasn’t really happened. I wouldn’t start him personally but ideally would have him on the bench. His problem is that he’s not incredibly creative and while he is a good tackler he’s not a disciplined holding guy.

A good all rounder but I think the likes or Hendrick & Hourihane offer more offensively while Whelan, for all his limitations, is incredibly disciplined and positionally aware in that holding role.

So I support the Hendrick/Hourihane/Whelan trio that Mick favours, and I’d consider Arter as a replacement for Hendrick/Hourihane. But honestly maybe I’d select a guy like Browne off the bench before Arter, as I think he perhaps has more upside.
