I think Arter has to start a game for Ireland before he's close to the starting line-up.
We are saying the same thing except I'm just thinking about what Harry has to do to get into the Euro squad, not the starting line up.

I think he first has to show what he can do in a green shirt in order to jump from a possible to a probable. What if he excels in our new away strip?

What if he excels in our new away strip?
Then fair play to him, we applaud excellence.
But he would still have to make the favorable impression in the green shirt first, in order to have that away game opportunity.

I would make Arter a starter.
I mean it is a sign, his destiny, a biblical message.
St Arter.
Put it this way, Martin O Neilll will surely burn eternally in hell if he doesn't start him.

That's a bit of a mad one is it? Do many pros do that? I could see the temptation after retiring but maybe slightly unusual midway through your career? Anyway, fair play to him.

A few do, the only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Alan Dunne's "Phillips and Dunne Football Academy" - https://www.facebook.com/Phillips-and-Dunne-Football-Academy-727786040640869/
(don't appear to have a web site, just a facebook page)

Sent off for two yellows.

He just got sent off v West Ham, Cheikhou Kouyate had effectively got past him down the wing, but Arter was
still trying to drag him back, I was thinking he was going to get a booking for that but then i rememebered
he already had one, so he did indeed get booked and subsequently got sent off.
Rather unnecessary, there were other central defender back do deal with any threat.
He got his first yellow after a handball, but I think the commentator said he got the card
for talking back to the ref.
West Ham just scored and about 5 mins to go, so not a great contribution from Arter.
I'd say it was probably heading for a draw prior to the sending off.

There has always been a question mark over his discipline and temperament, not something I'm sure you could level at Whelan or McCarthy whatever their faults.
I think he's a decent player but hyped up beyond all belief. I read elsewhere i.e. not here all kinds of complementary posts about him last week. I watched the game and I thought there were 6 or 7 Bournemouth players better than him on the day.
That being said he's a good squad player to have, though not markedly better than the likes of McCarthy or Hendrick.
While I am here, Eunan O'Kane is linked with Leeds and Wigan but Bournemouth are supposedly looking for £1m.
IDK if this will be a stay of execution for him. I think Howe has made his mind up about O'Kane at this stage.

Now that Robbie is retiring, is Harry going to be your new bête noire ? Who has hyped him up "beyond belief" ? Admittedly he was voted PFA Fans' Player of the Year in the Championship in 2014/5 and was more than holding his own in the Premier League until injured so to praise him for that would be well deserved but I haven't seen any beyond belief hype? I'd suggest that he be given a good run in the team before you start on his case. Actually, wait until he scores 20 goals and 50 or so caps and then get really stuck in that he is only good against weak teams.

I said he's a decent player and a good option to have in the squad, though not markedly better than Hendrick or McCarthy.
Which of those parts do you disagree with?
A lot of Irish fans seem to believe that he should be a nailed on starter already. Whose place would he take in the team, Whelan, McCarthy, Hendrick or Hoolahan? Even Brady looks like he could be a genuine option in midfield after his recent performances.
I have watched him for Ireland, and I thought he was poor against England and good, not great, against Holland.
I just think he was not one of Bournemouth's best players against Man Utd when reading online would make you think otherwise. I also think you could foreshadow his red card last week. He needs to improve his disciplinary record because referees will tolerate less in Intl matches.

A lot? Really? I don't think so. I think 'a lot' of Irish fans were highly impressed with Hendrick, Hoolahan and Brady during the Euros in the types of position that Arter would be aiming for. I think people just want to see him given a shot. The England game was a tough one to impress in as he was really pegged back and it was a short appearance. And, as you said, he was good against Holland.

I think he's a credible option to start in midfield even if everyone is fit, but realistically he's best seen as first or second back-up to any one of McCarthy, Hendrick, Brady or Hoolahan. I'm not saying any of these is similar to the other or that he is similar to any of them, just that I think he can step in for any of them without changing the balance of the team too much. He can play deep-midfield (probably not as well as Gibson or Whelan, or even O'Kane) and very definitely middle-midfield and advanced-midfield.

Playing in friendly competitions at any level does not cap-tie a player. A player who competes for one nation in a friendly match is not considered cap-tied and may represent another nation in a competitive fixture, should the opportunity present itself. An example of this is Jermaine Jones (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jermaine_Jones), who had played three friendlies for Germany (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany_national_football_team) in 2008, but started competing for the US (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_men%27s_national_soccer_team) in 2010.

Wouldn't blame him if he does seeing the likes of Stephen Quinn getting on ahead of him as well as seeing regular 'space filler' Whelan starting ahead of him. MON will be the only one to blame if Arter does feel a 'niggling injury'.

He simply has to start after his performance against Watford.
James McCarthy is expected to join up with the squad despite having not returned to full training at Everton since undergoing surgery on a groin problem a month ago. Ronald Koeman (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Ronald%20Koeman&article=true) acknowledged last week that the player was entitled to travel under Fifa rules and was determined to do so but urged the republic of Ireland’s management team to be careful with a player who is clearly not fully fit.
There is also some doubt about Stephen Quinn (http://www.irishtimes.com/search/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Stephen%20Quinn&article=true) who did not even make the bench for Reading at the weekend, prompting speculation that he is injured although there has been no confirmation either way from the club.
http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/international/james-mccarthy-to-join-up-with-ireland-squad-but-remains-a-doubt-1.2814071
I'd almost expect Quinn to be ahead of Arter in the pecking order in the event of a McCarthy absence, but even with both of them going into the game as doubts, surely Hoolahan will get a recall for one or both of these games?
Walters, too, starts every game so you would imagine something like Walters, Hendrick, Whelan, Brady; Hoolahan; Long
And then you have to factor in that McGeady will be in line for a recall after starting at Preston; Brady is a bonafide option for a more central midfield role; McClean starting at WBA every week.
There are a lot of of options. I don't necessarily agree that he has to start even if everyone isn't fit - though nobody would argue against his inclusion at the expense of Whelan. Then, while Arter would add impetus, Whelan has the discipline and shape that perhaps Arter doesn't.
I won't lose any sleep over whether he starts or doesn't. Having seen Pilkington make arguably as big an impact in the Premier League over a more sustained length of time and then go on to flatter to deceive at Intl level.
We done perfectly well at the Euros without him, and while some people were apoplectic with rage over Quinn and Murphy coming on in Serbia at his expense, both of those players were integral to us picking up a point.
And let's be honest. If Arter starts on Thursday he is still going to be starting in a MON system which is going to be designed to make him look as good as Hendrick or Long or anyone else is allowed to look.
It's not going to be an elixir.
