The home match V Poland was also destroyed by a shocking dry bumpy surface. usually such surfaces suited us with Jacks tactics but in the Poland match is just added to the whole stop / start nature of the game. Jack asked that we never play another home match in March after that game.

That game was played at the beginning of May.

I was in Wembley that night and nearly sure it was close to the end as well. Can’t forget it myself. Talk about the goal at his mercy and normally a great finisher in those positions for club and country. What i also remember from that night was Paul McGrath’s performance. I felt that was his best performance in green that night.

Yeah, McGrath was in midfield that night I'm sure and set up Quinn's equaliser. I always remember one of tabloid headlines the next day - 'QUINN PEAKS'. The American television programme 'Twin Peaks' was pretty big around the time!

Was Kevin Moran wearing a headband in that game? I think he had a shot that hit the outside of the near post before we scored. From Dixon's deflected goal until half-time we simply battered them. It was relentless stuff and the goal from Quinn was inevitable when it came. What a shame about Houghton's miss - about ten mins from time?

Yeah I'm sure that was the game where he had a white bandage around his head alright after a clash. I remember O'Leary smacking one into the side netting as well from a tight angle. That was during the insane period in the first half where England could barley get the ball as far as halfway.

Amazing really looking back at it that we had the luxury of playing Paul McGrath in midfield because we had defenders as good as Moran and O'Leary to play centre back, even without Mick McCarthy. Irwin and Staunton as well being full backs who could attack and defend in equal measure, a rare commodity these days.

It was a shocking miss by Houghton at Wembley. Nothing ridiculously harsh about what you said.

Poland away was a total waste, Poland at home was just one of those days and made worse by their keeper wasting about ten minutes feigning injury. Worst of all was Poland, already 1-0 up, not being given a stonewall penalty against England for a Chris Woods foul. It was the last game, concurrent with our 3-1 (?) away win in Turkey. 2-0 would have killed it but instead Lineker got a late equaliser which put them through at our expense.

At the equivalent stage one tournament later England got their just desserts against Holland, though they conveniently overlooked how blessed they were in Poland when blaming eveything under the sun except their being rubbish for not qualifying.

It's also often forgotten that the only reason England got a win away to Turkey against a team we comfortably dismantled twice was through a blatant punch of the ball into the net by that cheating little scrote Dennis Wise, the extra point they got that day was the difference, had we been level on points we'd have topped it on a far better goal difference.

Same old failings at our end tho, too many draws in games we should have won.

Is this another (veiled)attempt to show how good your memory is?! :P

I would have been around 8 or 9 for this. Its strange I remember the Holland game and the Italy game of Italia 90 and so many games where we got half days at school or brought to the assembly hall to watch(around the same time or earlier), a Christian brothers school too I might add, but I can't remember this game :( And it was England. Was it on terrestrial tv?

Yeah, every game was live on RTÉ in those days including friendlies.

I remember the first fixture between the two as well. I was at school so my father 'taped' the game for me. I was home before it ended but I wanted to watch it in full without knowing the score. I had heard him clapping loudly when Cascarino equalised from another room in the house alright, but I didn't really know what was after happening for sure. When he was getting the recorded game ready for me he flicked over to RTÉ 1 to avoid the analysis on Network 2. That damn programme Live At 3 were after getting a report of the match from Lansdowne Road and the had they 1-1 scoreline on the bottom of the screen, very annoying!

Yes got the boat as well. We went in the car and took in Man City v Southampton at Maine Road the Saturday afterwards. Fair bit of trouble on one of the tubes that night before the match at Wembley.

I was two weeks out from my 7th birthday.

I have zero recollection of the Euro 92 qualification campaign. I remember Euro 88 (ish) from my dad going on about it around that time and Italia90 but no idea why Euro92 didn't happen in my mind!
I remember the WC94 campaign vividly.
I also haven't forgiven my mother for not allowing me get a half day for the game v the IFA team in Lansdowne where Staunton scored from the corner. Never forgive her!

I had a half day but somehow it was still 3-0 when we got home. The envy in the eyes of all the other kids as you swanned out at 1 O'Clock to watch an Ireland match.

In the Poland v England clip...

"England's strength and spirit envied by every other footballing nation"

The pretentiousness knows no bounds. Not one mention of Ireland in it either, he makes it sound like we weren't even in the equation. Even if Poland had won we would have still gone through ahead of them. What a sickening campaign.

It came absolutely apropos of nothing as well: "Poland were 1-0 up. Everyone loves England. Hurrah!"

I don't know if it's from an official commentary, but if it is, it's very poor form that the commentator has clearly made no effort at all to pronounce the Polish names properly

I'm actually getting annoyed even thinking about it.
I remember she said I could have the the half day but she didn't show up to collect me. I embarrassed myself by heading down to the yard to look for her. Gah.

We were 3-0 up in 28min.

Townsend 20, Quinn 22, Staunton 28

There are times when I can stun friends/family with a clear memory of the precise timeline of a decades old event, in all its mundane glory, because it happened around the time I heard the bad/good news about an Ireland qualifier etc.

Reminds me of when I lived down in Ealing in the late 90's and I was in an Irish boozer when this little fella walks in and I knew I recognised him but I just couldnt place him. A lightbulb lit and I had it, it was little Bill Ray from Londons Burning. The mrs turned to me with a look of bewilderment and put me right, it was indeed little Dennis. I've never taken her to the pub since.

That's how I do things generally.

Like how I remember the night I had my first sneaky teenage drink (and last until I was 18) on September 17th 1997 because it was a date shared with my friends birthday, My friends sisters debs, and Denis Irwin scoring a free kick against FC Kosice in the Champions League and an all-night session of Sensible Soccer on the Sega Mega Drive.

The idea O'Neill overachieved on a small budget with Villa is false. He had the fifth biggest budget in the league and he consistently hovered around 5-6th place, ie exactly where you'd expect. Still, he's a good manager and I think he could do very well with Ireland.

Pulis would have been a great manager for us a few years ago when our strengths virtually mirrored Stoke's except in terms of raw physicality. But with the retirement of Duff, Given and possibly Dunne, we don't have the players for that type of game plan and Pulis has roundly failed to adapt his Stoke team in spite of bringing in smaller, more technically proficient players.

What the hell does this mean?

Neil Lennon:
The thought of him departing for the Ireland job would not anger the Celtic faithful too much but the possibility of sectarian violence may be enough to make him think twice about accepting the role.

What sectarian violence?

I would hate to have Lennon near the role. Can't stand the man.

ArdeeBhoy
23/05/2013, 10:43 AM
He is from the North and his 'history' is well documented. But no chance of Lenny and a totally unsuitable match just now.

Think we're stuck with Trap for now and the best REALISTIC alternatives when he goes are the likes of O'Leary, O'Driscoll or McDermott IMO.
Clearly we'd prefer someone better but unlikely to get ano. high-profile manager so soon...

BonnieShels

But I can't quite figure out where or why such sectarian violence will occur should we appoint a guy from Lurgan as our manager. A Nationalist from Lurgan for that matter.

Rodgers certainly has a point in this article, Trap needs to trust more in the technical ability of Irish players, but to say they have the same technical ability as players on the continent is hard to agree with. Personally, I would love to see Gibson come in from the cold.
