Rodgers is dead against the idea of NI kids playing for the ROI (despite his son playing for us!). Surely he'll have some influence?
I think you have already answered that question. If he can't convince his son ....

I know from talking with people that Rodgers was a ROI fan and played GAA as a young lad. However, I know that he has also said that he feels alot of sympathy for the North losing players that come through their system and declare for the Republic at a later date, who often have little or no interest in playing full internationals for them. I would imagine that as is typical with high profile players/managers from up North, they are less likely to rock the boat too much. MON was a bit the same with young McClean.
TBF, while I feel the current situation where northern lads can pick from NI and ROI is the fairest, I do have some sympathy for the North myself. I get the impression that Rodgers is the kind of fella who would want McLoughlin to make the choice he is most comfortable with, rather than forcing him in to any decision. I would imagine that Rodgers would view international football being essential for the development of young players and if lets say the Irish u21s were doing well and qualified for a tournament, he would love him to declare for us. Likewise, if the North did well, he would feel the same way too.

Well yes but the point being he was actually a decent ride.

That is really interesting. I heard him on newstalk a few months ago and he seemed anything but a fan of the republic. he said it was not too late for his son to reverse the mistake he had made playing for the republic and when he was asked if he would like to manage the republic he made it clear he was northern irish and the republic was not his country. came across as a hateful ***** I thought im sick he has the liverpool job
Sounds like he is from the green side of the fence
Rodgers was born in Carnlough[1] to parents Malachy and Christina,[2] the eldest of five brothers. He was educated at St. Manyaras Collage in Ballymena.[3] He played Gaelic football and hurling in Carnlough before taking up football when he was 13.[3] He grew up as a supporter of Celtic.[3][4]

Doesn't necessarily indicate where his international allegiance might lie. Some GAA players actively support NI (http://irishfa.com/news/item/6687/down-gaa-stars-cheer-on-nigels-boys/) and some Celtic players do play and have played for them. Niall McGinn does support us, mind, despite playing for NI. Not sure how many Celtic fans frequent Windsor Park regularly either.

Robbie Brady to play left back in United's first preseason game in South Africa. Fergie reckons that could his best position long term. Have to say I am surprised but obviously wouldnt be without precedent... Ashley Cole or dare I say Stephen Ward
Ferguson identified the midfielder Jesse Lingard as a likely starter tomorrow, in addition to Robbie Brady, who spent last season at Hull and is widely regarded to be a left-sided midfield player but who could yet turn out to be this season's deputy for Patrice Evra.
"It is an area we're paying attention to," said Ferguson. "In the last five years Patrice has played an average of 45-50 games...But because he is never injured the opportunities haven't been there for Fabio... With him at QPR for a year, we are a little bit short in that department, which is why we are trying Robbie there because we believe there is the possibility he will develop into a left-back.

Might as well be playing left wing, United are playing that far up the pitch. Familiar site as United go to a foreign country and their support outnumbers the home team by about 9:1.

Wingers are a dying breed if not already dead, as per usual in England they're slow to adopt global trends so its in more of a dying stage than absolute death there but I doubt any young player who has ambitions at the highest level would be wise to mold themselves as an out and out wingers. Fullbacks are the new wingers and quickly becoming one of the most important positions on the pitch, Brady learning to play there can only be good news.

I fully agree about full backs becoming crucial in the modern game, especially with regards to developing moves, but I'd still prefer Brady to become a bona fide attacking player rather than an attacking full back.

He looked good going forward but a lot of United's play went through the congested centre. He got caught out on the wrong side defensively a few times though. The Guardian report mentions he "showed promise" at left back: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jul/18/manchester-united-amazulu-south-africa

Seems to reckon he is being molded into Evra's understudy for the season. He didn't play in the draw against Ajax Cape Town yesterday, which is arguably just as well.
"After the press conference, I had an idea I was going to play and, when I got the confirmation, I was over the moon. I didn't see [what the manager said] myself but what I heard was good and I'm delighted about that. It gave me more confidence going into the game.
"It's new to me at left-back but, like I've said, I'm enjoying it. They've been moulding me for the last two weeks into being able to start in that position. Hopefully, I can get better as it goes on. I suppose, if I keep on progressing, I'd like to try and take it [a regular first-team spot] at some stage."

My point is that the modern fullback is essentially the old fashioned line hugging winger. The attacking full back of old is the regular full back these days because they're all expected to attack. It's a very good role for him to be taught in for the long term, Ireland aren't playing that position at the moment but I'd be surprised if we stick with 4-4-2 for much longer.

Supposedly a distant cousin of the NFL's Tom Brady. Tom was a late bloomer, didnt start much at Michigan until he was a Jr. So Rob may be the next Roy Keane.

Hardly a late bloomer. Most college QBs don't play until they're juniors (third year university students).

He got drafted in the 7th round Colbert. And yes, many big schools like Michigan, ND et all start Freshman all the time. Oregon, Auburn, Alabama have all started Freshman in the last 5 years. Boise too. I went to Colorado and although we suck we are choosing between a red shirt and a true Frosh.

redcafe don't sound convinced of him at LB. Many describing him as too raw for this level and not a suitable backup for Evra. Worryingly its mostly his attacking traits of picking passes that seem to be most at fault, haven't heard of any defensive complaints.

Except Irish ones. We badly need a left back and one who can pass and attack as well - something he seems to be able do given his position with the u21s and the reviews last season.
This would be a dream come true and a gem of a find if he kept himself in the UTD team.

He played like a winger playing at full back which is understandable. Got caught out a few times with balls in behind him but his pace got him out of trouble a couple of times. He got forward well at times but I'm not sure he'll ever nail down a place at United. Wouldn't be fair to write him off completely just yet though.

Didn't see the games he's played in, but have heard he did well. I'm not too sure I'd read too much in to the criticism of the English Man U fans because I think unless he was incredible, they would find fault - it seems to me that they are using the fact that Evra is not being replaced by a world class player or even a Baines type of player, as an example of how their club is being run in to the ground by the Glaziers, rather than an attack on Robbie.
It can only be good for his game to get experience in a different position. I seem to recall Gullit and Cruyff talking about Ajax and how they train young lads to be able to slot in to various roles. I don't like Fergie and wouldn't really like Man U too much and I don't like his attitude to international football, but in fairness I always feel that Fergie likes a core of his players being Irish and British. When he retires, it might be harder for the young lads from Ireland to come through.

United were exerting pressure in the home side's half but couldn't produce the final ball they needed to get through the Shanghai back-line, with Brady especially wasteful from good positions.
Redcafe unimpressed and don't think he'll be getting gametime this coming season. Never know with ferguson though, nobody liked Gibson and he kept throwing him into games.

I saw the game against the Chinese team on tape delay last night. Brady was terrible, gave the ball away almost every time he received possession. I don't want to write him off yet because as we all know, he was playing out of position, and there must be something more to his game if Ferguson has kept him around this long.

Haha thats great. Its something I've said in the past, putting aside the ridiculous amounts of money that footballers at the top level can earn, deep down most of them are just like every other bunch of lads in teams up and down country. Camaraderie, pi$$taking, just wanting to grab a ball and get out on to the pitch and have a kick about.
Off topic I know but did you see the way Celtic team-mates left Mo Bangura's car when he went on loan to AIK Solna yesterday....

think I read in the Independent that O'Dea would be back for his club this week. Surprised Duffy hasn't received a call up as well. He's suspended for the final U21 game against Italy on Monday, not sure if this carries into the senior team as well.
