Alan Judge came on as a 67 minute substitute in a 4-1 win.

How's Doyle getting on at Birmingham this year?
Pretty much the same as last season: http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/playerDetails.xquery?playerID=38296
Taylor is still the no 1 choice keeper in the Championship games. Doyle did get a run out in the 2 league cup games, they beat Wycombe 4-0, and then lost to Southampton 2-0

Stuttgart88
01/09/2008, 3:24 PM
Doyle has been on the bench in all the league games I think. He was on TV in Brum's Carling cup win over Wycombe(?), 4-0 I think and apparently made some very good saves when the game was still in the balance.

I hope Doyle gets his chance again and works hard. He's got a physique any keeper would kill for, very much in the James / Cech / Buffon mould.

Edit: oops, Tets beat me to it and was more accurate as usual too!

Thanks lads :)
At the end of the season before last I really though he was going to be the real deal. Pity it went so wrong at the start of last season but he is still very young, especially for a keeper, so he has time to come good again. He has the talent no doubt but consistency is what is required for a solid 'keeper.

Good start for McShane.

Ireland looked class for Man City again. I have the lads in the pub convinced of his ability anyway (barstool CSC). ;)

/ I should say, Sheridan came on for the last 10 minutes for Celtic yesterday. He had a shot saved from a corner and towards the end he got the ball in the corner, he ran past the Motherwell player with ease into the box and took the shot. He should have passed to the waiting Samaras. But Strachan definitely rates him which leads me to believe he has a great football brain. He's only playing the game a few years.

The Irish Wolves contingent are all flying high at the moment.

Kevin Foley in true Finnan/Irwin style is becoming mr consistent is without doubt the first defensive name on the teamsheet. Keeps it simple, gets up the line well and with a bit of premiership experience will be ready for the step up to International level.

Stephen Ward is the defying the boo booys with his committed displays and versatility. Currently playing left back and dare I say may have found his rightful position. Always good upfront, but is a bit too rough around the edges. However has earned rave reviews in his last two games at left back. Strong, fast and gets up the line really well crossing for our second. Could be a left back candidate in a couple of years if he keeps the run going - Evra started as a striker so funnier things have happened.

Andy Keogh started for the injured Iwulemo. Set up a goal and played well by all accounts. Problem is his lack of striking, as his creativity is quality. Moved to the left wing and Vokes came on to score two, so don't expect him to be vying for contention for one of the striking berths.

Went to the Wolves v Preston game yesterday, so thought I'd update the latest on the Irish Boys on show:

Kevin Foley - Mr dependable never looked phased. Gets up the line brilliantly and his overlapping with Kightly on our Right Wing has been a major reason for our success this season. Very comfortable on the ball and always looking to pass and move. A few stray passes but on overall performance 7 out of 10. Personally, think he's ahead of Kelly as our right back for the future.

Stephen Ward - Another accomplished performance at Left Back and appears to be growing in confidence. Not massively tested but quick and strong resulting in their right winger getting subbed. First and foremost he is proving to be a very good all round footballer with a good range of passing and lively game full of energy overlapping down the wing and providing useful crosses. Slowly becoming a fans favourite for his adaptability and self-belief in the face of abuse from some quarters.

Andy Keogh - Came on and looks to be back to his best. Plenty of running down the channels and intelligent runs creating space for others. Cleverly set kightly up for the cross for Iwulumo's 2nd and played kightly in with a clever interchange under pressure for our penalty. Still needs to fill out and build his overall presence upfront, however after setting up one and scoring midweek playing on the left wing is proving to be a tricky player who can play upfront or on either wing and has pace to burn. Iwulemo is out for 3 games (bar getting the card rescinded) so should get a run in the team.

Sean St Ledger - Steady at the back, however was eventually overpowered by Iwulemo, although Mawene was more at fault for the three goals. Slightly small for a centrehalf (or so it seems) and was not as commanding as our back line. Preston fans that I talked too after the game raved about him though and said that he is equally adept as a left back, which could be a more attractive proposition for our perspective.

Super Mick McCarthy - Great to hear the fans singing his name again. Has got us playing absolutely brilliant free-flowing attacking football. Have read some utter rubbish on eleven-a-side by posters slating his style of play and man-management however can defintely say that this is the closest I have seen to us playing total football down the Wolves with interconnecting free-flowing passing football which was simply too good for Preston. The spirit in the team is quality and his assurance that no one is bigger than the team (such as Freddie Eastwood) is paying dividends. With an average of 3 goals a game and a +14 goal difference after 7 games from a team with an average age of 22 that has essentially been fashioned from young aspiring players coming up from the lower divisions it is simply too good to be true. He was knocked during the latter days of his tenure for Ireland, possibly harshly in retrospect, however looking back he was a relatively inexperienced manager who has since learnt a great deal which we are thankfully benefitting from. If his name was thrown into the hat in 2-4 years time after Old Trapp calls it a day, I definitely think that we would be getting a better manager than before and would certainly have my backing.

Not looking good for Darron Gibson - thought for sure he'd figure in United's Carling Cup plans and get a bit of competitive game time, given his good pre-season form. He's only on the bench, with Possebon selected ahead of him. Probably needs a move, whether permanent or on loan.
