Fair play to Billy Clarke on helping Brentford to their promotion.

Roy Keane, the new Ipswich Town manager, is already taking an interest in the goalscoring abilities of the diminutive Billy Clarke, a fellow man of Cork whose reputation has grown during three spells away from Portman Road this season.

Two more goals from the 21-year-old confirmed that Brentford will go up as the champions of Coca-Cola League Two and improved his chances of winning a new deal at Ipswich.

Clarke recalls trying to speak to Keane a decade ago, walking to his house in Cork with the intention of telling him about his desire to become a professional footballer. Keane was not at home, but the pair finally met last week at Portman Road. “It was just a quick chat,” Clarke said. “I’d like to have a chance there. Ipswich has been my club since I was 15.”

Clarke’s goalscoring talents, which produced nine goals at Darlington during his loan spell at the club this season, were evident in the quality of his two finishes. The first was a clever header from David Hunt’s free kick in the 43rd minute and the second was a solo effort, completed with a pinpoint shot in the 54th minute.

“He’s a natural goalscorer and he deserves all the credit,” Andy Scott, the Brentford manager, said.

The sour edge to Brentford’s post-match celebrations was provided by an injury to Damian Spencer, who was taken off on a stretcher after 70 seconds with a suspected fractured cheekbone. The striker was the victim of a violent aerial challenge from Alan White, which earned the defender his second red card of the season.

Alan Bennett, the Brentford captain, claimed his first goal of the season before Clarke’s contributions and the only second-half surprise came when the margin of their supremacy was cut with Pawel Abbott’s strike being fumbled over the line by Ben Hamer, the Brentford goalkeeper, in the 59th minute.

Kyle Naughton was as well, not sure we're counting him, though because he has as far as I know only played friendlies for the England u21s here still eligible (and of course he's still under 21).

Dean Kiely had an absolute stormer yesterday and was the undoubted man of the match. Some incredible saves were made. I've no sympathy for Tony Mowbray if he's as stubborn as to pick Scott Carson ahead of Kiely all season, at least he showed him how wrong he has been all along. Good to see that he can still do a job, put some goalkeeping worries at ease...

Dean Kiely had an absolute stormer yesterday and was the undoubted man of the match. Some incredible saves were made. I've no sympathy for Tony Mowbray if he's as stubborn as to pick Scott Carson ahead of Kiely all season, at least he showed him how wrong he has been all along. Good to see that he can still do a job, put some goalkeeping worries at ease...
I believe that Dean Kiely is a better goal keeper than Carson and should have seen more first team football this season.

Albion would have been better spending the money spent on Carson on an outfield player probably a striker that could get the odd goal.

It's amazing how Carson got so many accolades from the BBC this year. It's easy to look good in goals in a struggling team. I've felt all year that WBA would be far more solid with Deano in goal and yesterday went some way to proving that. The crowd were well on his side too.

Being a top keeper isn't about making a flamboyant save at 2-0 down, it's about making smart saves at 1-0 up or 1-1.

The paper I read slated Kiely for the equaliser but whilst I think he could have saved it it had taken a pretty wicked deflection and he wasdn't to blame.

His save down low to his right was top class.

He was fantastic against Columbia. Really no clue why he wasn't given a chance for West Brom before now.

Carson isn't a bad keeper per se, but I would call him overrated, and certainly there's not much in it between Kiely and him (based on what I've seen I'd pick Kiely every time).

Old player but he's still got it. Glad to have him back in the squad as I rate him higher than the likes of Henderson and Kenny.

No clue how he stands up against Westwood, but in my view the best 3 Irish keepers are in the squad so I'm happy enough.

Born in Newcastle, and capped for England at U-19 level. Hasn't been involved with England since he broke curfew a couple of years ago.

I think it's only U-21 caps that "lock you in" once you're past 21 (he's 20), so if he is eligible through parents/grandparents I think he could still play with us.

No clue on his roots though so until we know that information it's not really worth discussing.

Maybe someone should drop the FAI a line to investigate?
