As dr.peepee mentioned, I can't see anyone outside the teams getting promoted to the premiership being willing to take a chance on him. His age, wages, recent form and history of injuries would keep him off most lists as a potential signing.

Wolves or maybe back to Blackburn would be my bet, neither of them would match his salary though so unless Newcastle do what Leeds did I wouldn't be surprised to see him sit out the remaining 2 years on his deal.

As an afterthough, didn't Hodgson have him at Blackburn, maybe Fulham as an option?

MICK McCarthy will ask the Wolves board to sanction a move for Ireland star Damien Duff after the winger was put up for sale along with the entire Newcastle United squad.

Duff is set for the third move of his career as relegated Newcastle are cutting costs by offloading their squad. The playing panel - and the entire club - have been put up for sale by owner Mike Ashley.

Ashley is trying to raise a £40m cash injection but even if that money can be found, Newcastle players will still have to be sold, and that could force United to take a serious loss on Duff, a player who cost them £5m from Chelsea three years ago.

see you say that but it just comes across as desperate. its a real fall from grace for duff, in fact quite disastrous, and yes i know the argument, if he's still doing it it in the green then it doesnt matter how he plays for his club blah blah blah blah(so much for players like fahey having to 'prove' themselves in England right?)

He plays on the right. Matt Jarvis is their left winger. He's not too bad (not as good as Knightly) but I reckon Duffer is definitely better.

Anyone that says Duff wouldnt make the Wolves or Burnley teams is a joker,he is still head and shoulders above anyone at either of those 2 clubs.He has been at a mess of a club for the last few years so its no wonder his club form hasnt been great but his International performances have been quality. Owen was probably worse than Duff at Newcastle but because of him being English with a reputation in the past he got a move to United where he will probably do well. If Duff got a similar move I still think he would be capable of playing in a Champions league team

No I wouldn't because we don't have an internationals playing in the Eircom League. It's no big deal Duffer playing in the Championship. Many an international has done it before him, including Kevin Doyle.

No I wouldn't because we don't have an internationals playing in the Eircom League. It's no big deal Duffer playing in the Championship. Many an international has done it before him, including Kevin Doyle.

well i believe your only saying that because you know its not going to happen while it looks quite like duff will be playing in the english second division next year.

if he was playing in ireland he'd still be the same duff, my reason for wanting him to move is out of pride i guess, i like to see irish players do well as they're representing ireland(part of the reason i wish the top irish players played outside england as well)

Exactly. I wish Irish players as much success as possible at club level. I think it's great to hear people finally coming around to the fact that Shay Given just may be the best in the premiership. Don't understand people saying all that matters is that they do well for Ireland.

It's been quite the fall for Duffer. While I would not read any more into a heavy pre-season defeat than into a big pre-season win (their hammering of Darlington), it is as clear as day that unless Newcastle get things sorted off the pitch quicksnap then the playing staff won't stand a chance. Duff is going to be absolutely key to our chances of finishing in the top two spots in this group (and it irks me no end to hear people referring to our standing in the group as if a playoff place is a fait accompli, as many commentators and even players (such as Doyle) have done recently) and if he is to find form it means that either the club sort themselves out, or Duff walks. I'm sure Sunderland/Wolves would jump at the chance to take him. Duff has been excellent for Ireland in this campaign, but staying at Newcastle in their current state poses too great a threat to his form and confidence coming into the pivotal stage of our efforts at qualification.

I said previously in this thread he followed the money to the shambles of a club and got his just desserts. :mad: Football made him a multi millionaire and I'm sure he could have survived on around 50k a week at Liverpool. All this talk of staying loyal to NUFC is simply because he not going to get paid better anywhere else.

I will admit he has been a great servant ( and player) to Ireland and stilll has something to offer us.

In Robben's first season Duff was the better player imo. He was regularly outscoring him in the ratings and Mourinho even said that everyone is talking about Robben when Duff has been his best player.

I thought Duff had a good game today for Newcastle and had a lot to do with them getting back in the game. Maybe I am biased but he had that extra bit of class. If he stays injury free, some time in the championship might do him good in that he might get some confidence from performing consistently over a number of games.

That's true, he's probably still too good for the championship.
He played against a footballing side today a shone. I'd just be worried that some of the other teams in that league will be just interested in hacking the legs from under him, I hope he manages to stay injury free for the season.

He has lost that yard of pace, but his football brain is still way ahead of many others, especially at that lower level.

He displayed great intelligence at times, and might have been in at least twice more had players picked up on his runs.

The actual goal itself was a very hard one to finish given the angle, and the fact that it was on his right foot. Well taken.

He had a pretty average game apart from the goal, but his off-the-ball runs were fantastic, and had he someone with a bit more football intelligence to link up with, Newcastle might have won the game.

I dont follow German football very closely but Id much prefer to see Duff at a decent German club rather than at the likes of Stoke, Wolves or Hull... Although I still fully believe he could do a job for a top club in England if he had the right manager

To be honest, I've lost all faith in any Irish players going to a continental club.
