:giggle: Well I for one am delighted he turned up! :)
Looks a bit harsh now maybe but that would have been in the aftermath of Murphy and Walters being selected as battering rams against Scotland, with Long seeing ten minutes of action! (And we won the two games he missed :)).
He was effective enough against Italy, good against France and got a priceless goal the other week so I guess it was worth persevering with him.

Ya they perceived a lot by keeping him in and out of the team.
benitez has indicated that murphy is more likely to make his debut on tuesday in the league cup rather than today. wolves the opponents on both occasions.

They're 1-0 down at home so perhaps he'd have been a useful option. Clark on the bench after scoring during the week.

Not named in the matchday squad again today. It's beginning to get a bit concerning now.
It looked like he was finally building momentum for us after some superb performances in the summer and that crucial goal against Serbia, but now it's one step forward and three steps back.
Two games against Georgia and Moldova would have been the perfect games for a confident Murphy to come into after Belgrade too.
Can't help but feel another forward should have been brought in.
Long is lacking sharpness, Doyle is barely even a short-term option and Walters is off-form and probably won't be fully fit - though neither has ever stopped us from starting him and won't now.

Rafa Benitez gives Daryl Murphy update at Newcastle (http://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/rafa-benitez-gives-daryl-murphy-update-at-newcastle-1-8194453)
Kind of mixed comments really. Possibly the most disappointing thing is that Mitrovic isn't even getting starts, so it reduces the chances of Murphy even seeing game time from the bench.

That hardly instils much confidence. 'We picked him out of two or three that were available and wanted him for advice'. £3m is a lot to spend on advice.
If they get promoted it seems like Rafa will offload him asap

Newcastle is the kind of club that needs advice alright and Rafa could take some advice himself...e.g. Don't keep changing the team in a league that you want to win or do very well in .
Daryl must be a great man for the auld advice.

Maybe they have him in a lab in huge a test tube in a room under the stadium, or in a confessional setting with Murphy as the priest and Mitrovic goes in weekly for a bit of advice.

I think what's happened is several teams that would have been aiming for promotion were considering bids for Murphy. Newcastle bought him without the slightest intention of him starting any games (barring a huge injury crisis) just to stop him from signing for a rival team.
They can afford to do this. It's a microcosm of what's wrong in the modern game.
I don't buy the theory that they are "managing" an injury they allude to that troubled him last season.
I'd be surprised if Murphy was unavailable for any more than 2 or 3 games since he's signed for Ipswich.
It's nonsense really.

I hadn't heard of anyone else bidding for the Murphy. I am not sure your theory of Newcastle buying him to prevent others from having him is correct. They are a big club ok but I don't think they have that sort of money to throw around. I also suspect he is injured.

“The way he (Murphy) was working in the training sessions...it was not a big difference between one or the other one (on the bench),” said Benitez.
“He did really well. He was winning the ball and bringing players into the game. I think he was fine.
“It was a difficult situation because they were deep. He did what he had to do. The only thing we didn’t do was score. We had a lot of chances, especially first half.”

Just looking at his goal from the weekend. He did well to get there ahead of Mitrovic who got stretchered off after the subsequent clash with the Birmingham goalkeeper. He'll be out for up to three weeks so that won't do Murphy's chances of some extra game time any harm either. Benitez, not known for heaping too much praise on his players, had some nice things to say about him too.
"Daryl Murphy put in a tremendous effort. I’m really pleased with him and the fact that he scored too. He’s a great professional.” (http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/how-the-irish-fared-daryl-murphy-is-a-great-pro-says-rafa-benitez-438279.html)

I don't think he played up front at all when he was in the Premier League with Sunderland.
I know he was playing on the wing when he first arrived at Ipswich on loan from Celtic.
He started scoring fairly regular when he was shifted up front.

Then why, oh why do all our strikers keep getting used as wingers? And for that matter, why do half our midfielders keep getting utilised as full-backs? Do managers in England know to say to Irish players "go play out of position - for a laugh" because Irish people will do anything as long as the reason given is "for a laugh"

I don't think so. If you look at the last page of this thread, it appears he was out until the middle or end of October with calf strain and wasn't always making the bench when he even returned, such were the options and preference for those options by Benitez.

Straight off the bat, they're wrong about this
Murphy, 33, hadn't even started a game for Newcastle before this month's FA Cup clash with Birmingham City, but he's now hit three goals in three starts to become a new fan favourite at St. James' Park.
He started a league cup game for them in September against Wolves

Great spot. As I said, I was more sharing it for the tone of the article. As opposed to the journalistic brilliance of it!

I wouldn't defend Mr. Benitez too often but I think he can only be seen as shrewd in this situation. He basically signed Murphy as a third choice striker and he has come in really useful in Mitrovic's absence, he may have even jumped ahead of him in the pecking order. The Championship is a long hard season and Benitez recognised there would be times when players are injured or need to be rested. The most important thing from Murphy's point of view was to take his chance if and when it came and it's brilliant that he's done that.

have to agree with this - murphy is doing exactly the job he was brought in to do, which is score goals when the first choice strikers (gayle and mitrovic) are injured or not in form. i also think that benitez was originally thinking 4-4-2 but has found a 4-4-1-1 / 4-3-3 more effective with one central striker.
it's arguably also the case that murphy has now made himself 2nd choice striker which is quite good going. mitrovic is no mug, scored twice against austria and once v wales in our group for example, and gayle is the player of the championship so far.
murphy has had to bide his time to some extent and take his chance when it came, and fair play to him he is doing that so far.

Best Newcastle player against Ipswich according to this: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/daryl-murphy-watch-strikers-commitment-12907901
I am trawling through his Soccerbase profile ATM and I see that 9 of the Ipswich players who started against Cardiff on 09 March 2010 were either Irish, Northern Irish or eligible for Ireland. Surely that's some kind of record!
The lad who was eligible for ROI was David Norris. Forgotten man Shane O'Connor completed a rare 90 minutes in that outing also.
