Daryl on BBC Sport "I've been used as a left-midfielder quite a lot in my career, which is not my position, it's a centre-forward"
"I know, if given the chance to play as a striker and a run of games, I can score goals, especially in a team like Celtic who will be attacking a lot.".

I really can't see him being deployed as a centre forward. Like you said he's nowhere near as good in the air as his height suggests, but he has a cracking left foot and seems to do his best work in wide areas (not necessarily as a midfielder, but as a roaming striker).

got on for the last 10 mins or so against Braga and when asked to pass the baw back to the opposition the other night after them cheating and diving aw night, he battered it back to the goalie from 50 odd yards trying to score Beckham style and the keeper just put it over his bar. Got dogs abuse for the rest of the game but he was the only **** who felt the disappointment and I hope to see more of this guy.

On yae go mate, Celtic through and through, I like the cut of this guys gib.

Celtic v Dundee U.
After a solo effort getting past 3 defenders, Daryl scores a goal that McCourt or Messi would be proud of.

Messi would be pleased, McCourt'd probably feel it was fairly standard.

Yes, but could he do it on a wet Tuesday night in Stoke?

There's a clear one second (sync or stunned) pause before the crowd can be heard celebrating.

Fifth goal of the season on half-time to put Ipswich 2-0 up at Charlton.

Could he be one of the shock call ups for the Serbia game? Big, strong, athletic, scoring for Ipswich and he played under Roy.

Unlikely perhaps, but so is Flood.

His newly minted potential Irish international team-mate David McGoldrick might be a better option - four and a half years younger and really hitting the peak of his career, scoring at a rate of one goal every two games over the last two seasons. Maybe we should send Roy Keane to have a quiet chat with their club manager - who is that again? ;)

"He’s rubbed shoulders with the likes of Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, but former Ipswich loanee Danny Higginbotham believes Daryl Murphy is one of the most talented players he has ever played with."

“Murph is one of the most talented players I have played with but at times, and I am not being disrespectful, it is a case of whether he wants it,” said the defender, who was brought in on loan by former Town manager Paul Jewell.

“He has got everything. He can pop up with goals, play up top on his own, and he is one of the strongest lads around.

“He can definitely lead the line for Town and managers know they can bring other players into the game using his strength and movement.”

Championship leading Irish goalscorer, Daryl Murphy, has netted his 10th goal of the season this afternoon. Ipswich 2-0 up away to Brighton and still very much in the hunt for a Playoff place after today's events.

11th goal of the season for Murphy and a crucial goal in the context of their battle for a Playoff place.

A good day for Monaghan in the football league as both Murphy and Jonathan Douglas scored as their teams took a step closer in the promotion race for their respective sides. Ipswich now two points off the Championship play-offs.

TheOneWhoKnocks

Murphy is from Waterford.

Bournemouth are the team with momentum. Going by form, they would be the team to gatecrash the Playoff positions.

13th goal of the season today. It's looking like his goals over the last few weeks could make the difference in Ipswich grabbing a Playoff place. Who needs McGoldrick?

Charlie Darwin

They're only outside the playoffs now on goal difference from Brighton, and Reading have to overcome the awesome power of the doc('s team mates) on Monday.

2 in 2 games for Murphy. Supposedly his goal was brilliant. His partnership with McGoldrick is certainly developing.

Chronic goalkeing though, no?

Good effort on goal alright.

Charlie Darwin
17/09/2014, 9:19 PM
It was a nice effort but you'd have to blame the goalkeeper for that going in. Even if it was in an awkward position for the goalkeeper and with a bit of pace, it was a poor effort. Still, credit to Murphy for the technique and you don't get the luck unless you steer it on target to begin with.

That was awful. If the keeper had set himself up right it would have just bounced into his chest and looked like a pretty tame effort.

Stuttgart88
23/09/2014, 7:53 AM
I only caught the last 20 mins on TV last night. Ipswich had started retreating by that time but up until then had been the better team. Commentators said that they'd have been more than 2 up if McGoldrick and Murphy in particular hadn't been wasteful.

He looks in good shape though, fit and mobile.

Fixer82
23/09/2014, 11:13 AM
That's a speculative effort. I'd say he was as surprised as any that the keeper didn't gather it

Murphy with a brace as Ipswich lead Forest 2-1. If Ipswich hold on, they end Forest's unbeaten record and go level on top.

His first goal was a "goal of the season" contender and a "cracker" according to the natives on their forum.

Definitely ahead of Cox & Sammon now...4th best striker now?

TheOneWhoKnocks
05/10/2014, 5:47 PM
Probably only behind Long and Keane in fairness. Much on a par with Doyle, Walters, Stokes.....

Should probably try and fit in as many of those strikers against Gibraltar as possible.

Maybe Long & Doyle up front together - they worked well together against similar opposition in the past. Stokes playing off them to see if he can become an option for that role - where he does a decent job for Celtic. McGeady & McClean on the wings. Gibson with the other up field role. Theoretically there is at least 3 or 4 goals in that team with McGeady & McClean filling their Intl. goalscoring boots lately allied with Doyle's Intl. form, Long and hopefully Stokes.

Looks like Meyler could play RB against Germany so give Gibson the midfield start so he can start with one or two of Whelan and/or Hoolahan against Germany. No need to start Keane in this game.

Would like to see Hendrick given a chance to start in Germany but I doubt it will happen. Whelan, Gibson at the base and McGeady, Hendrick and McClean/Pilkington supporting Long sounds good.

Martin O'Neill says he seems to have found a bit of extra pace! Ok, self praise is no praise, I know. :)

Papers seem to be suggesting he's played himself into contention for a start, and I'd be quite happy with that - as long as he's not seen as some kind of hybrid left corner forward. He says himself his good form is down to playing centrally.

Credit too to TOWK who has been positive for a while on Murphy. I freely admit that not long ago he was one I wasn't bothered about. In the squad, fine. Not in the squad, no big deal either. Not any more. I'm glad O'Neill has been watching him and has been taking note of his form.

DeLorean
04/11/2014, 9:14 PM
Wouldn't take much notice of that really. It's easy to say a guy should be chomping at the bit and all that, but the game had lost the small bit of intensity it had, so it was difficult. Even Hendrick looked far better against Germany than he did against Gibraltar. It would be interesting to see Murphy in more demanding circumstances.
