The few that did travel were almost anonymous, apart from the reported pre-match aggro they allegedly caused in nearby Kennedys pub

Wow, great crowd for Dundalk. how did 4100 squeeze inside Oriel?! What is the capacity limit?
Nesta99
30/06/2018, 11:33 AM
5500 is safe capacity limit afaik. It's not such a squeeze even at that capacity. A couple of friendlys in the 90's with circa 10k at them was definitely uncomfortable so what it was like with the records of c18k in Europe 1979-82 I just cant imagine!!

I don't know what number is on the current safe holding certificate, but based on the recent past it is likely to be well below what you suggest. It is probably around the quoted attendance figure from last night - circa 4,200

4117 and an empty away terrace section? - as maligned as it is holds 600 (based on 800 being the allocation to visiting clubs and that would include seats in the stand). I doubt that if more than 83 additional Cork supporters had arrived up they wouldnt have been turned away. I dont believe that the safe holding capacity would be ignored either so 4200 seems too low. I was of the opinion that the capacity was capped at 5500 as per the safety cert, down from 8000 as the previous stated capacity from 2001/02 (I know that to be the figure then as I did the walk around of Oriel with the FAI designated engineer for licencing I think the first year ground infrastructure was included). The club of course could have its own lower limit capacity of 4200.

4,637 was a sell out crowd in Oriel in 2016, October 23rd vs Bohemians.
Assume 4,700 must be capacity limit at that. Certainly not 5,500.

I think I’d agree with this for 4,700. That was a Sunday evening game too as it was in the middle of the EL group stages and Dlk won the league that night also. From last nights figure, I’d imagine 4K were home fans, that’s an excellent turn out really.

I'd guesstimate 2,800 at Rovers v Derry City on a sunny evening in Tallaght stadium.
Very few Derry away fans. Lots of families which was great to see.

Must have read 2762, but still a decent crowd all the same, if only Sligo could hit a consistent run as they have an incredible support that are prepared to turn up at any cost.

I was quite surprised to see that figure announced as I would have expected closer to 5k than 4 for Cork v Rovers, but WC QF is a major attraction.
There should have been no reason why all games couldn’t have been played on the Thursday night for this week only.

The world cup is a killer alright. Im very pleasantly surprised that the CL game is selling out despite the semi final at the same time.

That was so it wouldn't clash with the World Cup quarter-final on Friday night. Obviously it'd didn't help boost the attendance much...

I don't think Thursday night attendances would bear that out. Maybe if it had been announced weeks in advance.

Read somewhere, about 850 at Bray v Cork with some 2/300 kids in free and about 100+ plus Cork fans.
On TV last night, I'd guess near 1,500 at Tallaght for Shams v Sligo
Derry estimated 1,500+ for St. Pats visit

Saw something in the sun (I think) the other day that they returned to Saudi and there hadn't been much contact in the last week or two. So ya never know what might happen now...

Excellent away support from Bohs at Oriel.
Yes noticed that, they had a very good turnout on the away terrace and a good few in the stand too, fair play for 7pm on a Sunday.
It might only be less than 50,but I think more were actually at this game (3,139) tonight than the Tallinn or AEK euro games (3,100 restricted capacity)

By chance I just saw an article about average attendances per club so far this year in the Brazilian serie A. I was amazed that some massive clubs there have fairly mediocre attendances. Vasco de Gama -7k. Botafogo about the same. Santos circa 10k. We're talking about super famous clubs here with massive traditions, in hugely populated cities in a soccer obsessed country. Maybe our meagre attendances aren't so terrible after all.

Well that's more to do with economics. The average person can't afford to go to games regularly as the cost of living is so high and wages so low.

Our attendances are compared to the English game and GAA rather than our contemporaries in Europe. We're roughly on a par with the likes of Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Belarus. Generally though, there's one or two teams in those leagues with much higher averages.
We don't do too badly, all being said. The problem though is just facilities here. Our stadiums are so far behind many European leagues.

Flamenco average about 45k per match, and Corinthians and palmeiras average 30k.
