I never pretended I don't watch it ;) It may sound strange for a goth fan, but I do watch Eurovision every year, it's a tradition since childhood years for me. I first watched it in 1991 when I was 9 years, and never skipped a year.
My favourite songs since then:
Youddiph - Eternal wanderer (Russia 1994)
Eimaer Quinn - The voice (Ireland 1996)
Secret Garden - Nocturne (sounds a bit goth, doesn't it ? ) (Norway 1994)
Frances Ruffelle - Lonely symphony ; We will be free (UK 1994)
Kasia Kowalska - I want to know my sin (Poland 1996)
Anna-Maria Jopek - Ale jestem (Poland 1997)
and to a lesser extend as the above I also liked these ones a lot:
Katrina & The Waves - Love shine a light (UK 1997)
Brainstorm - My star (Latvia 2001 if I remember the year right)
Ines - Once in a lifetime (Estonia 2001)
Debbie Scerri - Let me fly (Malta 1997)
Urban Trad - Sanomi (Belgium 2003)
Frederic Etherlinck - La voix est libre (Belgium 1994)
Michelle - Out on my own (Netherlands 2002 - not sure of the year)
Lindsay Dracass - No dream impossible (UK 2002)
Ruslana - Wild dances (Ukraine 2004)
Think my ultimate favourite of the last 15 years if I really must pick one will be Youddiph (Russia 1994).
Don't know which entry I will support this year. Haven't heard any participator yet. It's more of a surprise anyway if I hear them for the first time the evening of the contest itself, so I am very curious and looking forward to it.

We all know you are their secret fan Maz!! :D I thought the Henry Girls would have did well, Europeans always fall for that traditional style Irish music. This song however is really weak, I could write better myself, and I'm no Elton John!! :D
Not fair as the semi final is only on BBC3 and I don't have digital tv, i won't see it over here..
No i aint a fan but if i was id be rubbish at keepin it secret wouldnt i :p

But at least their song was better even if it was basically nicked from The Corrs. McCauls's song is weak lyrically and Joseph, God love him, cannot dance, he needs to get rid of the earring, he said it brings him luck, so there is not hope of that happening!! In fairness, the Henry girls are much older, so you may find them 'frumpy'. I don't think so, one is 30 or something mind and has children. The guy with the guitar lurking about is funny. :D But, regardless, I hope they get through to the final and I wish them all the best, I would love to see them win, such bad lyrics do not deserve to win, but I'll be supporting them anyway.

Watched the competition videos on RTE. They showed their contempt for the semi-final by only showing a segment of the semi-finalists songs, with the exception of Ireland, obviously, which was left to last. All of the finalists songs were shown in full. Like I said earlier, it will be almost impossible for us to win, but we should be guaranteed the most votes from the British in the semi-final, giving us 12 points at least. I expect most of the Balkan/Baltic bloc countries to qualify, regardless of the quality of the song. But Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus are all in the final, so it frees up some qualifying places for other countries. The voting used to be the most exciting part of Eurovision, now it's the least, due to all the political voting going on.
Among the favourites to win are Spain who have 3 Andalucian Flamenco dancers and a catchy song straight out of the Las Ketchup mode, and UK. Greece are also among the favourites to win, and have a great chance, as their song has everything. An upbeat song, great choreography, A Meditteranean flavour, English language, a pretty girl, and plenty of neighbours for votes. Among the no hopers however, are Andorra, Holland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Monaco, Mary Harney lookalike Chiara, from Malta, and surprisingly Sweden, who normally send a good song to Eurovision, but not so this year. The Bushwhackers among the audience, will like Russia's entry, Nobody Hurt No One.
Ireland's next rehearsal will be the first semi-final dress rehearsal on Tuesday.
Apparently the dancers fell off a table the other day but wernt injured!

Must admit I'm biased towards the McCauls 'cos their uncle is Paddy McCaul of Athlone Town FC - one of the soundest blokes you'll meet. The "song" is embarrassing but then the Eurovision was always embarrassing and ultimately about the voting nonsense at the end.
Wouldn't it be great to have a real contest for, say, rock or folk bands? Just a thought.
Haven't watched it for over 20 years and don't intend to change a good habit.

We are 2 days from Eurovision, and all you're worried about, is whether Eurovision threads are merged. If they are merged, let it be in here in the music section, as Eurovision is about a music contest. That's why this thread is in here. Post in here again please, when you have something to say about the actual show itself. :(
Any idea anyone what time the voting finishes at cos finish my bar shift at 10, and wouldn't mind catching the votes bit...
If you mean the semi, you won't catch the votes. There's no formal voting procedure, just the names of the 10 countries who receive the most points will be handed in envelopes to the presenters to announce who has qualified for the final. By 10.30, the semi show will be well over. If you can stomach the long, boring, voting procedure in the final, It will finish at 11.10pm.
Merged, and moved to music. Can't have everything your own way KT :D

Though Katrina & The Waves will never compete for me with Youddiph (my favourite Eurovision entry ever since I first watched the show) I think "Love shine a light" was not that bad. The lyric was simple, as a popsong more or less requires, but it had a nice idea behind it, and the song was a nice tune.
Of course it will never be a nr 1 for me, I'm not really into pop music. But for its style and certainly as a Eurovision entry, it was a nice entry.
What I would like to find out is what happened with all participants afterwards... (maybe a good idea for that Irish Eurovision site ??)
I mean, some artists were already stars in their country and obviously a Eurovision entry will not change that no matter if the result was good or bad. But there have been some talented young singers and bands who made their first appearance to the big public via Eurosong, I wonder if they ever continued succesfully in music... They could be a huge star in their country and even neighbouring countries, or they could have gone back into anonimity... Would be nice to have a "where are they now" section on that site.

Why shouldn't I take it seriously? If more people here took the Eurovision seriously, we might have a better chance of winning! It's one of the few things we are capable of winning. Eurovision is about a music contest, that's why I began a thread in here, and also because the thread is likely to remain longer in here, than if it was in OT.
Saw the Bosnian entry on Saturday with the others. The girls are indeed striking, but the song is poor and cheesy. They are certain to receive 12 points from Croatia on Saturday, as they are all Croatian girls. Bosnia will return the favour to their neighbours on Thursday, as the Croat singer is Bosnian. Eurovision is one of the few times in the year when bitter enemies become friends. Even then, it only lasts 3 hours!! :)
On a lighter note, Greece's Helena Paparizou is one of the favourites to become EBC winner (Eurovision Beauty Champion) 2005, as well as win the contest itself. Her competition will mainly come from Russia's Natalia Podalskaya, and Germany's Gracia. There are lots of glamourous foreign girls competing in Eurovision this year, unlike last year, when it was a male dominated event.
As for Donna McCaul, she's more likely to be a contender for the Barbara Dex award, for the worst-dressed performer. That is a real award. She might be beaten to it however by Malta's Chiara, who is a Mary Harney lookalike singing a ballad alone, therby guaranteeing zero chance of winning for her country, who normally send good songs, and do well in the contest. Well, Malta has to be good at something!!! :D

[QUOTE=paul_oshea]hamish castlerea celtic is one of the oldest clubs in ireland. founded in 1887. did ye know that??? there is even a picture of the first game played there!!!!
I'd say they're even older POS cos Athlone were founded in 1887 and Castlerea were founded by Coote at least 5 years before that. I have the Athlone Town history book - will check it out.
