Are Mervue United in the Algarve on pre-season or is it some kind of a sick joke?

"Mervue United play local Portuguese side, Quarteirense, tonight at 9pm before wrapping up their 5day pre-season training in the Algarve"

Whats sick about that?

Nothing sick about it I'm sure they can afford it they're quite a well run club by all accounts. They don't pay their players or they pay very little so treating them well is good if they can afford it. Plenty of GAA clubs do it.

Did they get into Europe by default?

Fair played if they can afford it, id be pretty sure all clubs would do the same if they could.

They must be making a bit off those cake sales and dinner dances. Genuinely thought it was a **** take...

They went last season too. Not sure about this year but last time I'm nearly sure the players part funded the trip themselves and sold club lotto's etc to cover costs.

1-1 Stephen Traynor for Bohs

One sub brought on for Bohs, Ryan McEvoy who was on loan with us last season.

How did McEvoy do last season? Has looked very impressive whenever Ive seen him.

He was decent enough, good technique but he didn't really seem to enjoy the rough and tumble that you can get in the First. Went to Athlone for the second half of the season so I don't really know how he got on there.

Thought he was decent enough with us, he spent second half of season on loan to athlone

Of course they did, every single penny. And the players don't get any money at all over the season either.

Nice to see players willing to play for free and even willing to pay to go on training camp abroad. Being from cork and living in Galway I go to watch the 3 Galway sides in action from time to time. Great to hear Derek o brien signed for cork after hearing he was training with mervue. Question for Galway fans? Is there many players playing with salthill and mervue that would be good enough to play with Galway and how come 3/4 players have signed back to salthill or mervue for this season?

Bohs come to Turners Cross tonight at 7.45 - should be a good game in fairness. We will have pretty much our starting XI starting I'd imagine, though Derek O'Brien is suspended for the Wexford game.

I'd fancy our chances at a win tonight, Bohs haven't had much time together and we've had a fairly settled team in pre season

"Captain" Greg comes into midfield for Shane Duggan who has a hip injury

There was a couple of players I saw last season who would be able to make the step up to Premier Division, Daryl Horgan (Devon) being the obvious one, but he has signed for Sligo Rovers who were able to offer more money than United. I know approaches were made to a couple of other players from those clubs, and have been told by someone at one of those clubs that they were able to offer expenses above the age being offered by United, who have a budget of less than €2k a week. A squad of 18 on that budget is just over €100 per player per week, not the most attractive offer in the world, and also doesn't require a lot of money in terms of expenses to surpass that. In fairness, there is also the issue of facilities, with Devon having a cracking set-up in Drom, and Mervue as good as owning the City Council pitch that is Fahy's Field. Pity Derek O'Brien was not considered worthy by Sean Connor, delighted to see him at a club like Cork

I haven't seen either team as yet and heard indirectly from Derry when we played them that Harps are strong but just got a feeling Limerick will get off to a good start, 1-2. Sheehan and O'Flynn is as good a strike pair as there is in the First I think.

Harps very tough 1st game.

Just back from game tonite, have to say Limerick look a very good side and will have the best keeper in the 1st Div in Barry Ryan, Sheehan was outstanding and O Flynn was good target man, definately worth a bet for promotion.

We were very, very, good tonight, great shape to us, we look like we'll be an absolute pain in the arse to play against which is a great thing.

Can't understand referees sending fellas off in pre season games by all means tell his manager to sub him but sending him off and putting one team down to ten men can make a mockery of games, like supposing Bray had beat us four nil, what would they learn from beating ten man Limerick?

As it turned out twas a great exercise for us. :)

Gary Sheehan is going to score fifty goals this season, Paudie Quinn looks a real find, Stevo put in a great shift, Pat Purcell is fitter than he has ever been, our ball retention at times is brilliant, Barry Ryan had an excellent game, we seem to have fairly decent back up players for more or less every area of the pitch (but still a tiny bit short imo), overall cautiously optimistic about a fairly good year.

We beat them 1-0, Danny Furlong scored last kick of the game. Drogs didn't produce much and didn't look very fit either. The Utd. fan I was chatting to didn't see many players who played for them last year.
