Keith mentioned "I was really, really sad to see Duffer go, I was devastated, it was a horrible time. I was devastated he left. I was disappointed that he left. It wasn't a nice chapter, it hurt, but wasn't nice, the spotlight that came on, it was a horrible period, unsavoury."
What was the unsavoury bit and why did Damien quit?

All I know is Duff walking away meant we got a proper coach in Anthony Barry to join the set up. Duff walking was probably the best thing to happen to Kenny.

Supposedly walked because the FAI made a fuss about videogate I think.

I wish I'd get good jobs every time I finish doing badly in the previous one. Failing upwards I think it's called.

Wow seems like 10 years ago since Duff and Alan Kelly were part of the set up.
I don’t even remember what the fuss was.
Something to do with 1916 or something?

You're not wrong. Covid has really warped my perception of time...

He/they showed a video about Anglo-Irish history (Easter 1916 and football related) designed to stir emotions. Some lunatics got upset.

Thanks for the info.
Reminds me of being stopped at a checkpoint in 80's crossing the border and my 3 year old sister leaned over and asked the soldier 'are you the one who shot James Connolly?'
My parents' faces dropped.
He replied, 'Who's James Connolly?'

Maybe when the book mentioned in CraftyToePoke’s signature gets serialized by the tabloids, we’ll get the tell all. :)

There’s a part of me that hopes Kenny goes full scorched earth in a year or two. Not for any greater good, simply for my own entertainment. ;)

If he writes how he talks it'll be a colouring book.

Though for the record, Brentford's last two set-piece coaches departed for Man.City and Arsenal.

Though the club also installed a Sleep Coach a while back. Dunno what happened to her, but maybe KA is being lined up for that job, too?

Best of luck to him, great to see him get an opportunity. As EalingGreen has pointed out on another thread, Brentford seem like a very well run organisation, so it reflects well on Keith that firstly he got the set piece job and when an opportunity to be promoted to manager, he was still in a position to be a candidate and impressed enough to get the job.
I'd imagine it would have been one of the most sought after jobs in world football this summer (top 20 being conservative?)

I like Keith Andrews.
I can't remember if there was something specific that a lot of posters here don't like about him, or if it is simply down to being associated with the Kenny era.

I hope he does well.

I don't think it's a personal issue at all. I'm sure he's a decent man. But he was Kenny's right hand man throughout his disastrous time in charge of the Ireland senior team and seemed incapable of offering anything to change things for the better. So it's understandable that Irish football supporters are sceptical of his abilities.

I don't think anyone here actively wants him to fail, but with his lack of experience in a pretty unforgiving environment, it's more likely than not that he won't be a success

Its good to see an Irish manager getting a shot at the Premier league but it must be a bit of a sickener for the likes of Kenny and Bradser that the guy probably the least qualified of the 3 of them gets a shot at it and the big bucks
That being said he obviously impressed Brentford with the work he was doing for them as they wouldnt have been short of candidates.

Kenny's failures with Dunfermline and Ireland pretty much ensure that he will never be a serious candidate at that level. Not to mention his complete inability to deal with the media in any kind of coherent manner. Even Lincoln City weren't interested when he applied.

Bradley's inability to go 10 minutes without stirring up trouble or picking a fight via the media will almost certainly be counting against him also. Plus there remains a sense that he's a "when Plan A fails try Plan A" kind of manager.

That being said [KA] obviously impressed Brentford with the work he was doing for them as they wouldnt have been short of candidates.Phil Giles, who's in charge of recruitment (and no bulls1tter) said that when they originally took him on, it was in order to get him on the (general) coaching team somewhere, but they asked him to take charge of set pieces, since a vacancy had just arisen due to the previous incumbent leaving (for Arsenal?).

Meaning they were observing his overall work and impact, not just in his specialist role. Though as it happens, he did brilliantly at that, since BFC's nett Set Piece success rate (i.e. goals scored minus goals conceded) was top of the PL by some way. And it may have been KA who identified the kick-off as a "set-piece", with BFC scoring in three successive games within the first minute, before opponents got wise to it.

While more generally, the club always recruits to their coaching team individuals who might one day graduate to the top job. On which point, it is very possible that Justin Cochrane would have got the Bees gig ahead of KA, had Frank not taken him with him to Spurs. JC is another one who has never held the Head Coach job at any club, while having a much less distinguished playing career than KA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Cochrane

I think around the Greek games where he was naive in press conferences and Poyet basically laughed at him, did a lot to damage his reputation in my eyes anyway. He was never a genuine contender when the Irish Manager saga was on going because of it I think.

At the same time he walked straight into a Premiership gig after Ireland and has been consistently employed since. There might be a bit of Martinez about him, in that hes good at managing upwards. I hope hes brilliant at Brentford, especially considering the Irish players there.

Poyet is managing Jeonbuh Hyundai Motors now, while Andrews is managing in the premier league. One for Andrews to include in his golden clerics award speech.

Wish him the best. He's kind of had a career of coming out of nowhere to suddenly being at the top so there must be something that we don't see as much. I've a feeling they're going to start the season strong. Will be very curious to see how he handles things when the inevitable bad spell kicks off

I like reading Andrews' stuff. He seems a likeable, level-headed and articulate guy. I think he'll go on to be a manager or coach and we'll be hearing more from him in the decade after he retires.

From May 2012 :)

I didn't say anything about him being a good manager.

He was our best player at Euro 2012 and probably a bit underrated for us as he was involved in some dreadful displays.
But he was solid.
Him and Whelan in Paris absolutely bossed it.

As a pundit, he comes across as a total shaper. That coupled with the clothes range is just a bit….unusual for Irish people I suppose. It’s a bit McGregor I suppose. Or maybe Paul Galvin. We’re not used to it. But as I said, best of luck to him. I hope he succeeds

Fulham (A)
Man U (H)

WHU (A)

So not too hard to start off, before it gets noticeably harder?

Getting 9 points from those games would be an excellent return. You'd expect to beat Sunderland. Draws away to Fulham and West Ham would be good results. The rest are European sides (and Man Utd who should be a lot better next season)

Thanks Fixer, you sparked a memory there with the Paris comment. It was Andrews who sparked off against Diarra towards the end of the first leg when the French were starting to go all Frenchy and arrogant.

And his missus I'm pretty sure is the designer (she was charged with the Euro 2012 squad outfits) - the comparison with Galvin is a god one.

This - Brentford are a very well run club and they tend to make good choices. Appointing Andrews is a risk and survival in the PL this season would be a good result for them and him. Surrounding himself with good coaches will help and he has started with getting that U-21 coach from Arsenal who has a good reputation and O'Connor has a developing reputation as well.

I hope it works out well for Andrews (and the Irish players at Brentford).
