Most of the players were happy with Staunton and seemingly wanted him kept in the job so I wouldn't pay a great deal of attention to their views on possible incumbent managers.

noone wants to say anything bad about Venables in case he does become manager and it affects their chances of a place in the squad are right on the money.

He's not going to pronounce Venables as King of the gimps. He could be his boss next week.

My point exactly. None of the quotes from any player I've seen has been "I'd prefer manager X over Manager Y", every one has been "yeah I think manager X could do a good job" and only after they've been asked "what do you think of manager X?" so a journalist gets an easy headline of "PLAYER WANTS MANAGER X - EXCLUSIVE!!!" .

Turkeys aren't going to vote for Christmas, and no player is going to say anything to affect his chances of a place in the squad.

Except for Steven Ireland of course :D Actually maybe he'll give an honest opinion

Ireland isn't out of the squad because he badmouthed the manager though, is he?
I'd bet money if someone asked Stephen Ireland "what do you think of Venables as the next Ireland manager?" his answer would be "well Danny Mills played under him at Leeds, and he says he's a great coach", i.e. the same as Doyle, Duff, etc.

no my point is ireland reportedly doesnt want to play for ireland so wouldnt mind if he was dropped by badmouthing the potential manager.

Even though Mourinho's gone have you noticed how many points Chelsea has picked up recently from set pieces? Set pieces are crucial and are one of the few things a manager can actually perfect with the limited amount of time he'd have with international players. The value of a goal doesn't increase because of artistic merit.
I think over 65% of Italy's goals at the last world cup were from set pieces. Or maybe it was 65% of all goals at the world cup. The commentator of last summers Asia cup kept mentioning it.

/edit:
Graham Arnold:
"The statistics from the last World Cup showed that 67 per cent of goals came from set pieces. Italy scored seven of their 10 goals from set pieces and they went on to win the Cup."

Come to think of it, if Robbie Keane is the only player in the squad to play under Venables, why hasn't any reporter asked him what he thinks of Venables, and what kind of job he'd do for Ireland??
Has he? I thought Keane was gone from Leeds before Venables took over? Morrison would probably have more experience playing under Venables than any Irish player.

from Terry Venables' manager careerhttp://www.soccerbase.com/managers2.sd?managerid=1191

Leeds 08-07-2002 21-03-2003
C Palace 04-06-1998 15-01-1999

Robbie Keane's transfer history, from http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=11957

Tottenham 31-08-2002 £ 7000000

So Robbie did play under Venables for 3 games in August 2002 - http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=11957&seasonid=132 - and scored against Man City in the opening game of the season. I did think he had played more games under Venables

Clinton played under Venables in the 1998/1999 season - http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=10566&seasonid=128 - 22 games, 4 goals and 2 yellow cards under Venables

A guy i live with works for Paddy Power and he got a call from a london branch that Ray Houghton's brother put money on Terry Vegetables to be next manager. Sounds like a dodgey rumour but its what im told.

To quote Paul Hyland in today's herald.....

'A round of appluase for Terry Venables who's keep a dignified silence'!

and .....'The FAI have done what no one thoughht they could do and found a credible candidate who isn't Terry Venables'.....!!!

Truly bizarre, when was Venables ever credible in anyone's mind bar him and Fanning?

Am I being busted by the grammer police here???

Yeah, that is a shocking picture they use for his articles alright!! It's a very begrudging article, he doesn't seem too happy but obviously can't deny Trap's record, makes for funny reading....

Quite true. I never thought about that. I was just thinking if Staunton could get a job there...

2 years is a long time in football. 4 games is about the length of time an international manager gets before the knives or plaudits come out.

I like the point at the end about the difference between a performance for the ages and a result for the ages.
