Plamen Markov will be appointed coach of Bulgaria’s national football team, Focus News Agency found out.
He has agreed with President of the Bulgarian Football Union Borislav Mihaylov on the terms and conditions of his contract. Markov’s task will be to train the team for the upcoming qualifiers for the World Championship in South Africa in 2010.
The option to appoint British Terry Venables has dropped.
It is expected Markov’s appointment will be officially endorsed at the Union’s next session in mid-January.

Venables was England manager for 24 games. 21 of them were at home. He still has the same win success rate as Graham Taylor who played 23 of his 38 games outside of England. Home advantage is huge and kind of discredits Venable's England record imo.

Venables has been linked with this job before the panel was formed as we know. That link wasn't just pulled out of the sky surely. Delaney wants Venables so Delaney will get Venables.

Most of the discussion on Tel the last month or two has been negative (who is the 'least worst' between Tel and Brady).

He has a management record greater (in size and achievement) than any of our previous managers. (ancient history I know)
He will have the respect of the players more than any other current candidate (open to debate )
He is considered a good coach within the game.

Venables and Brady have been the bookies' favourites for some time now, regardless of talk of Houllier, Deschamps, Allardyce or Mick II so I would be inclined to believe the RTÉ report.

Can't say the appointment fills me with hope but sure he can''t be much worse than the previous incumbent.

I agree.

If we assume for the moment that he is the new coach.

He would never have been my first choice but that is much more to do with his record off the pitch.

He is very respected as a coach (I have yet to find any record of a top class player that has worked with Venables who has anything bad to say about his coaching ability).

People have mentioned some of the mistakes that he made in the transfer market. You could say that about any manager and it's not relevant to our position so, frankly, I don't care about that.

I think that his manipulation of the English press and sly undermining of Steve McLarens position was pretty despicable. However, it was a bad decision by McLaren to bring Venables in as it's obvious that Tel likes to be the top man.

I know that Venables keeps his buddies in the press close but, in this case, he is the top man and he alone will be judged on results. If they're not good, then he'll get the blame - simple as that.

My main worry about Venables is his commitment. If he really wants to do the job, I truly believe that he is an excellent coach/tactician and could get the best out of our team.

However, if he is simply looking for an easy payday (and a large payoff if it all goes tits up!), then we're in trouble.

A professional organisation would ensure that, if he doesn't give total commitment to the job, he could be dismissed without a big payout. Unfortunately, I have little faith in the FAI to handle it.

I'll always get behind the team and I really hope that Venables can match his considerable skill and experience with a determination to prove that he can still do it at the top level.

If he did, I really think he can move the team onwards and upwards.

I think that we should ignore his previous record and give him a fair chance. It will be pretty obvious in a short time if he really wants to make something of the job or if he justs sees it as a "nice little earner" in between pursuing his other business interests.

To be honest, I think that's a fairly big leap in logic. The gossip at the awards tonight was that Venables would be recommended by the selection committee, not hugely different from what we've been led to believe for weeks now. There are posters on this board who would have been in attendance so it'll be interesting to see if any further details of this rumour come out here.

News broke at the Irish Football Writer's Awards dinner on Friday night that the three-man selection panel of Ray Houghton, Don Givens and Don Howe were set to recommend that Terry Venables be offered the vacant Republic of Ireland position.

An FAI board meeting is scheduled for 22 January and Venables could be installed then, but the FAI are refusing to comment on the story.

Rather than a thoroughly fact-checked story, it looks to me like just another of the many, many leaks that the media are so keen to run with so they can later boast that they were FIRST with the news.

Plenty of wiggle room in the choice of words. Eventually, one of these rumours will be correct and someone will do well off the bookies - even if this is the one, there's still a long way to go before the FAI ratify what would clearly be an unpopular appointment.

My concern with El Tel is whether or not he has the motivation & hunger needed to get our lads into shape, especially mentally. We can't hold onto a lead FFS!

Will he be willing to go to Championship games at Burnely or Ipswich to look at players or will he delegate to others?

Sort of on the positive side he may pull in a few Plastic Paddys I suppose which mighn't be a bad thing. We could use a new Andy Townsend or Ray Houghton.

Whilst Venables wouldn't be up their with my top choices for the job, I think it's important that if he gets the job (and I have being told he will be getting it, but I never totally trust the grape-vine) we support the man and let him get on with things. He has experience, that is undeniable. After all, if he is good enough to manage Barcelona (and win a league with them), as well as England, then he is certainly nobody for us to be looking down at. Also, if he has got the job, it means the players supported him or at least didn't have a problem with him. We could do far worse and I'm sure he would be driven to succeed.

This is from RTE not me. I'm not 100% convinced this is a done deal yet. If it is Venables then so be it. Not the worst coach around by any means. I still believe we missed a chance to get someone like Beenhakker or Bilic. Not someone who was going to have us playing Brazilian football but who fully understands how we play and how the opposition plays.

I'm convinced John Delaney was going to go European (mainland) after Staunton. He then spoke to a players grouping after the Wales game in Cardiff and spoke to Giles and then everything changed. Suddenly Venables came into the picture. JD should have trusted his own judgement. I am not a Venables hater and hope he might get us over the line for the next WC finals. But we never tried to get the best managers (for us)out there. Not Houllier who I believe is a bluffer. But Beenhakker, Bilic and others. Managers on a low income but proven international ability. Instead we ended up with Hoddle, Brady/Giles and now Venners. All OK people but not what we need. But I support the new Ireland manager.
