18 goals in 31 games now this season. Got a consolation tonight off the bench.

I'd like to see how Stokes would get on with a League One club. Would twenty from forty six matches be too much to expect?

He's had a few spells with Championship sides and failed miserably.

True but you can't map his career based on a couple of loan spells in his teens (playing wide midfeild also). There was a time when Dave Connolly was keeping out Kevin Phillips in a Watford side at that level. But who went on to have a good career in the top flight. I've no love for Stokes if I'm honest but I wouldn't right him off as an option just yet.

How can anyone write him off at 21 yrs of age is beyond me. Its be a great season for him, despite current standards in the SPL. Confidence should be very high, hopefully he kicks on and perhaps has another good season with Hibs and perhaps a move up the ladder after that. If he continues this form he will undoubtedly be at least a squad member for the forthcoming campaign.

A mention for Jon Daly as well who scored in the same game. I think thats 10 league goals in 19 league appearances for him this season. Playing really well in a Dundee Utd side that will more than likely finish 3rd. I appreciate at 27 he probably wont step up to anything like international standard but nonetheless good to see him performing well.

Stokes won't even get close to Robbie's record. Stokes is 21 now, by the time Keane was the same age, he had six goals for his country.

Six goals is not a great amount over a playing career, one extra goal a year would be enough.

The real reason he won't get close to the record is that he is not playing or indeed in the squad!!

Albeit from the spot, what I saw of the goal, wasnt a great standard. Having said that the lad deserves to be in the squad on his season form.

Decent spot kick, nestled in the corner. You cant ask for much more than that.

I only seen the highlights so can't comment on his overall performance.

He did commit a horrible 2 footed challenge later in the game though. Had the referee seen it, it would surely have been a red card. Its not the first time Ive seen him showing 'attitude' on the pitch, if he can keep it in check then the fiestiness will be a great asset to his game, however its the keeping it in check that might prove troublesome!

Incidentally, Jon Daly scored a brace at the weekend. First was a keepers error that rebounded in off him (The SPL's 7000th goal). The second was a well taken right footed volley straight off a corner. I reckon he deserves his own thread at this stage:p

It's beginning to look like he's too good for the SPL, but a year or two at Celtic before moving down south would probably do him a lot of good.

I wouldn't mind him going to a Championship promotion candidate...the key thing is that if he does move on that he plays exclusively as a centre forward instead of a winger.

couldnt agree more about his position. He is an out and out goal scorer and needs to play as a striker for a few years consistanty for him to improve. As a Celtic fan I would like to see him at the club because I think hes good enough but a Championship club with the right manager wouldnt be bad for him either

Stokes scored twice for Hibs in a 6-6 draw with Motherwell (they were leading 6-2 at one point). That takes him to 21 goals for the season, one off top scorer Kris Boyd.

Another year at Hibs would do him the world of good I think... Could be the most open Scottish league in years next season. Playing for a manager who knows him and knows how to play him. Plus it'll give him more choice and leverage in moving on as he'll only have a year left on his contract.

He'd be nuts jumping ship now. He needs to continue to build up his confidence. There's no better tonic for a forward than a steady flow of goals -no matter what calibre of opposition.

I just saw the report on the Guardian website, was there a program about him?

You can see both his goals in this video on YouTube (it'll probably get taken down soon since it's BBC footage). Neither goal is particularly good, Liam Miller assists the first one. Fast forward to 2m 30s to see Stokes' goals.

Have to say, the standard of keeping for some of those goals is absolutely pathetic, Motherwell missed a penalty too. The final goal is worth watching though :D

Stokes was very easily outpaced for in the build-up to Hibs' third. Reminiscent of a modern day Robbie Keane :o

Would you not think the "real" reason would be because he is no-where near as good as Robbie is? (Or was at the same age)

exactly. Stokes I think is a good player but people forget just how good Robbie was as a young player.

would be a great move on both sides I think. Hes a proven SPL goalscorer and the move to a bigger club will be a good test to see if he has matured since he was at Sunderland

My theory is that quite a few SPL players can look good when playing against Celtic but don't replicate the form when Celtic sign them.

From the BBC text on the Celtic Game
With United's game just about to get under way in Greece, a bit of transfer news for Celtic fans. BBC Scotland has learned that Celtic manager Neil Lennon is closing in on Hibs striker Anthony Stokes and is also keeping tabs on Israeli international Etey Shechter

It was even worse than my predicted 3-0 defeat. We really are ****e when it comes to away games in Europe, depressing stuff altogether.

Stokes wouldnt need guaranteed European football for a move to Celtic though (Im sure it was tongue in cheek stutts) I just hope Lenny knows what hes doing. I really like the look of Stokes, I have advocated bringing him in to the senior setup for a run out for a while now. However, we currently have Samaras, Fortune, Hooper, Maloney (currently playing a sort of nbr 10 role), Daryl Murphy. McCourt & Forrest positions fairly fluid but attacking players. Rasmussen has now gone out on loan. Id imagine someone will need to be shiupped out first.

Stokes just scored his first goal for Celtic against Kilmarnock, a tidy volley from a couple of yards out. Good to see him get off the mark. Daryl Murphy scored from the penalty spot in the first half.
